I looked around, but didn't see this posted yet.

I started a new campaign as the Scipii, and managed to take Carthage without much trouble within a few years. Having occupied the city, I can build Equities and Legionary Cavalry, but no Roman Cavalry. In my last campaign, the Legionary Cav was only available after the Reforms (as it should be, right?), but now I can build this unit, and it is only a few years into the game, way before the Reforms.

Seems like a bug to me. If so, I'll repost this in the bug forum. But if it isn't, can someone explain why I can build them now?

Is this a bug, or should I be able to build them?

I suspect it's an oversight more than anything else. If you dig into the export_descr_buildings.txt file, you'll find the list of buildings and what is required for/provided by each. Legionary cavalry does not require the marian reforms, while the early and late legionary cohorts do. I think the legionary cavalry probably was supposed to require the reforms, but it wasn't put into the file. Personally, I've added it to the file so I can't build them until after the reforms.

Amazing that wasn't caught during testing...I can understand certain difficult to reproduce bugs not being caught, but not something like that. At least the fix is easy.

Actually I am not surprised at all. There are so many changes in that mod. And testing takes so much time. I am not surprised nor irritated at all. They are only human and they aren't being paid to create it.

It is a great mod.

It's not too much of a difference to me as I have about as many of them as I do triarii before the reforms. And if your not playing as the Scipii they're almost guaranteed to beat you to the imperial palace.

doubt this is a bug. they're listed as pm units in the tech tree included in the game.

arguably makes the hippodrome too good (given the nice order bonuses races provide)

On a similar note - I've found that by the time Marius comes along, i have the infrastructure to allow me to build early and late legionnary cohorts, so i have never built an early.

It would be better if late cohorts came in at a specific date, replacing the ability to build early cohorts.
