View Full Version : All those little men and their funny foreign accents

To me, one funny addition to RTW compared to the other TW games seem to be foreign character accents.

I played until now the Romans and the Greeks (and of course the Prologue) and some yells, order confirmations and other voices still make me laugh.

It's that "Martz!!" high-pitched answer from the Greek generals...

It's that "Gloriiieee and onooor" from the same Greek generals after some (not so hard won, after all) victory.

It's that "... a day to mark with a song or two!" that I always understand as "... to mark with a SON or two" ~D from the Greek announcer...

The Greek assassins sound very muck like old homeless alcoholics, while the spies are so surprisingly... gentlemanly British...

...and, as somebody posted somewhere, that Scooby-Doo style yell in city square victory: "... the day is oooouuuurs!" :dizzy2:

Did anyone else notice how the Roman advisor's voice sounds like Russel Crowe's? (maybe it really is, didn't check the credits).

I look forward to play the other factions for some new discoveries of this kind as well.

Do you guys have your favorite in-game accents?

Yes I find it quite funny too. Yet it's quite odd to hear the Roman's "perfect" english accent whereas the Britons have that barbarians' standard voice ~D
My favorite voices may be the Greeks' ones too. (especially the one for "close victory" ~;) )

spy sounds like normal english with a sneaky undertone.

ambassador sounds refined english (old BBC newsreader type). ~D

"the day is oooouuuurs!" is an annoyingly high pitched american.

i assume that most of the voices are american by the sound of it.

Egyptian has got to be the funniest, also eastern (carthage to parthia, i think they are different...)

Most of the voices sound like they're aussies.

Ever fielded an army when the captain is a female unit? (head hunting maidens, screeching women etc). It's so obviously an aussie doing the voice!

Yea that voice drove me nuts. I fair wanted to stick a sword in his throat.

Thankfully I am now playing as Germania and don't hear it anymore.
Though I do like the Roman General who I agree sounds like Russel Crowe.

"Most of the voices sound like they're aussies."

Personally Lord Khaine, I think they all sound like pommies eat fried fish and chips.!

BTW is that a real title?

The Roman general's voice is the same as the Mandalorian mercenary, Canderous Ordo, in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for PC/XBox.

The voice acting in R:TW drives me both mad and hilarious at the same time. I can’t listen to that Greek pre-battle general rubbish, I skip it each time. Other fractions are just as tedious as the Greeks.

Well at least you guys don't have any problems with the localisation... The German version has plenty of stupid translation errors and funny comments which just don't sound right... But it's still one of the best transaltions for a game that i have ever seen... The German in Call of Duty is just plain horrid!!!

I don't envy you!
Localisation is usually a very bad thing. Luckily I don't get a lot of it where I live, just the occational manual - they sometimes take a lot of "reverse engineering" to make out what they're really trying to convey.

NFS Underground wouldn't install all of the patches. I think that was a localisation thing.

Spot on topic: archerrerrrzz!

There's a voice mod in progress, lots of info over at TW Center.

As far as I am concerned the voice acting is one of the worst and most embarrassing aspects of this game. It really undermines its image and the overall quality making it the worst presentation out of the three games so far.

I am also very dissapointed with the musical score, after VI and MI I really expected something a little more inspiring.

I just remembered how, quite some time ago, I read on the baords that some CA guys actually went to the woods, recording bird sounds themselves et cetera… We thought it would be the most awesome game of all times… And then… Keree-shaaan Arhcherrrss!!!

Oh, dear…

d'oh and heres me thinking that because i bought the game mail order in australia ( as it was out there before the uk version, and arrived one day before uk release) the aussie accents was teh price i had to be for being impatient.

as for other accents what the hell is the admiral saying when you move an egyptian ship, it sure dont sound like ships to me :-)

For the life of me, I can't understand what your units call the Selucid leaders. Are they saying "stratagos", or something like that? Because when I click on my generals, I hear "Strapping Horse!"?

What the hell is a strapping horse?

You have never heard greek accented english spoken have you? Trust me it sounds just like the greek generals voice. Most people who speak greek tell me that ancient greek is basically the same as modern greek. Kind of like how farsi (modern persian) is nearly the same as ancient persian. You also have to under stand that in RTW english takes the place of latin. So us moderns can under stand WTF the guys are saying.

Well the Britons are not english.

Well, I can live with the (emotional) style of the voice acting, because of gameplay purposes it would have been confusing to hear commands given in ancient languages, some of which are hard to reconstruct adequately, although I would have preferred that at least Latin names and terms would be properly pronounced to convey the feel you are actually commanding a Roman army and not an English one that uses adapted Latin terms (and gear) to describe its units and commands. ~:p
In that context, the strange australo-english accent of the female singer in the Roman ingame music (" Gladiator..." - it's an a as in Mark, for god's sake!! ~:) ) annoys me the most!

As for the battle speeches in general, I wish they'd added in some more lines for factions other than the Romans, they're repetitive and often misplaced. Perhaps we'll get to see and hear more in the expansion.

And to the other poster.. they say "strategos" which is a greek military rank of a commanding officer, a general or colonel, so to speak. (The greek voice actor actually seems to be Greek or Greek-descendent, and his pronounciation of Greek words is much better...)

Well in fact no, I haven't, maybe in Seinfeld at some point ~;) . But I know they always say "tse" instead of "tche" in any language they speak, I like this (and they are great at any party, you gotta love to party with them; after a battery of ouzo's :dizzy2: you might "tseck out zhat funny accents" as well).

Okay, maybe that was a little off-topic... ~

Personally, I think voices and accents in RTW are a great addition. It's a matter of taste, of course, CA can't make everybody happy... Some speeches still are really hilarious, in tone, accents and context ("There's something aepeeeeeeling, something aepoooooooling..." ~:) ). I planned to unlock Macedon for the next campaign, but now, after your posts, I'd rather go for Chartage, Egypt or Parthia. Maybe I'll have the chance to hear one of them captains yelling: "Deezdroooy zose Roman Bretorianz... and ze Bringibes as well!!" ~D

^Another thing you should know is that there are only about 4 speech types in the game. Roman, Greek, Barbarian, and eastern. Meaning the Carthaginians, Egyptians, Parthians, and Armenians all sound the same.

The advisor sounds like Anthony Hopkins and the Selucian generals sound like they were imported from Tijuana. :sombrero:

I personally think that the Carthaginian/Egyptian/Parthian/Armenian (CEPA) sounds russian. But heck, that's my opinion. As for the guy at the end of the battles who shouts out 'the day is ooours!!' me and my friends think he's a bit over-enthusiastic....

Yeah, the accents leave alot to be desired. When first using Greek archers I could swear I thought they said, "Balls of Artemis!" :dizzy2: ~

For a brief moment I thought this was a reference to some obscure hermaphroditic god that nearly slipped through the cracks of history... ~;)

It would be far more better that voices are on latin language (romans9, on old greek laungage for greeks..etc.

I love it when they call me "strapping horse". "Yes, strapping horse"
Strapping horses are not unheard of, Here's one: http://www.tbgreats.com/bio.html
Strapping lads are probably the best known strappers. Some of them strap a lot. Boots etc.
