View Full Version : Help! I got an Xbox...

Big surprise last weekend: I got an Xbox console from a friend. He got it as a sort of incentive at his job, and he didn't want to keep it as he is...ermm not so keen on games.

I checked the manual that came with the Xbox and was very happy to find out that it can playback dvd's, so I'll probably mainly use it for that.

But on the other hand, now that I got this console, I really can't just leave it standing there without ever playing a game.
Now my question is the following: can someone give some hints or tips for me, who has never ever played on a console? I really am a complete noob regarding console games, so I don't know what's out there.
What's good? What should I avoid?

I don't think I'd like shooters or those kill-kill-kill games, but I will perhaps try an adventure game.
I won't try on-line gaming, so you don't have to mention that as a surplus.
Oh yes, I'd be great if you could point me to some fun party games (up to 4 players).

Thanks in advance for any replies!

It has a dvd but it sucks, don't bother with it. Good games: Beyond good and evil, Knights of the old republic, Riddick (is pretty violent, but GOOD), Ninja Gaiden, Arx Fatalis. There are a lot more quality titles, but these are some of my favorites.

Knights of the Old Republic is my must have X-box game, although it's on the PC as well now. It's a role playing game set in the star wars universe and most people here agree it is one of the best RPGs in recent years. The sequel will be out in the USA in December.

I'd also point you at Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. It's an adventure game, you explore, solve puzzles, find assorted items both obvious and hidden. There's some fighting but it's only a tiny facet of the game. It actually has quite a good sense of humour; I found it to be quite funny. It's a sumptuous title; the graphics, the animation, the sound, the detail - it's one of very few adventure games where exploring the world is a real joy. For those who are acquainted with the Legend of Zelda games Sphinx is very similar to them. You should probably be able to find this rather cheap; it's nearly a year old and I don't think it sold nearly as well as it deserved.

Beyond Good and Evil also deserves a look. It's another adventure type, a bit short but with a very good story and a nice world. It's quite easy but that just makes it fun because you don't have the frustration of being killed on those occasions where you have to stop sneaking and/or taking photos and crack a few skulls. Again it didn't sell too well and it came out about a year ago, so it should be very cheap.

My younger brother got an X box...

We have played some cooperative Halo, which is fun, he also liked Fables (although it seems to be quite a short game), and right now, is playing Kingdom under fire which is what MTW would be in a console environement.

How can I describe that experience.... I don't control anything, I am lost with more than 2 units, but controlling your general and slashing throught ennemy ranks is great fun.
It feels like the general makes all the kills personnaly ~:) it's somewhere in between a confused MTW and a pure fight game!

I am not sure I'd recommand it though...

Knights of the old republic is a very good game and the sequel will be out in a couple of months.

Fable is good however i'd recommend renting in instead of buying it as it is a shortish game.

Burnout 3 is a very fun game even if your not usually a fan of racing games.

If first person shooters arn't your thing then don't get Halo (i would only recommend it for the 2 player co-op anyway).

Lol, yes why not?

Even though I'm not a console gamer I can still become one
Gotta purchase a few games next month, and then the box will be more than just a stand-in DVD player.
