So here is my 100th post. Share a glass of the bubbly with me and see if you can answer this question.

I'm sure it's been discussed already, but playing as the English a LONG time ago, and again as the Danes, I've come across a screen that tells me that in reward for my good Christian behavior, the Pope has given me 1,000 florins. What is necessary for this to happen? Is it based on the piety of your king/generals?

I don't think it's based on the numbers of churches I build (as I almost never build them except in "capitol" provinces ) and can't be based on crusades etc because the Danes can't launch them. I recieved it once as the English while at war with a faction that the Pope had asked for crusades against, and once as the Danes while at peace and fighting no one.

Any ideas?

It's usually because you've responded to a call for action - crusading or warring against an excommunicated Monarch. The peace scenario is harder - it always seems to happen when I'm building churches. Were you using a lot of priests at the time - doing a lot of converting? I seem to remember it happening a lot when I had priests scattered all over the map acting as spies for me...

yeah, that could be it. I had lots of bishops out because they seem to get assasinated less. It was a reall bail out because at that point in time I was really strapped for cash

It is a bit of a mystery, but the Pope seems to favour small factions, poor factions and factions with a lot of catholics in their borders when handing out cash. Excommunicated factions get nothing, but once the excommunication is lifted, the Pope seems to forget their past behavior and hand out money as freely as ever. The money comes out of the Pope's own pocket, so if he is poor there won't be any gifts.

However, sometimes the Pope gives money to a faction that is very rich already. Perhaps there is a threshold value of the Papal treasury, above which he starts giving money away. This would prevent the Papacy from getting too rich and too powerful.

by whatever means, do the catholics -way.

i always get it for building religious buildings (not only churches) and/or "converting" the middle east + thrace. a/o working against other catholics who themself dislike the pope(-al) policy ..such things.
