I know some of you are pretty computer savvy out there. I have a problem that is difficult to search for on the Internet.

When I use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, I get these extra links that lead to apparently unrelated sites. Text that was not originally made as links by the author are converted to links by a hidden program. I first noticed it on this forum, but it affects any web page with text.

Does anyone know of this problem and a possible solution? Adaware and Spybot have not found it.

Thanks.

I don't know about your specific problem, and without sitting down to have a look at your PC it's hard to say, but you might be able to research the issue here. (http://www.spamhaus.org/) Or here (http://www.pcpitstop.com/spycheck/top25.asp). Hmm. I'm not coming up with a good one-stop spyware info site.

You have updated your databases for Adaware and Spybot, right? Have you considered re-installing Firefox, just to see if that makes a difference?

I had it, but I don't remember how I got rid of it.

Either I used some of my anti-spyware program (Spybot, Ad-aware, spy-ware doctor, spysweeper, no-adware) or I used the infamous Format C:.

I think I was able to remove it by anti-spyware programs though, considering the amount of anti-spyware I got on my computer. It was to remove something very annoying and I don't remember any other nasty spyware I had on the comp.

I also have it at the moment and am unable to remove it - by spybot and adaware.

Try this site... it might help? http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/
However... it sounds to me like more of a virus than spyware? Are you up to date with anti-virus?

Wow, quick answers; thanks, guys.

My PCCillan antivirus updates automatically as updates are available. I updated my Spybot and Ad-Aware last night before running them. Since then, I haven't seen the renegade links, but they weren't predictable.

Loading a new webpage after clicking a valid link is slow right now, and I suspect this spyware/virus is the cause. One thing I'll try next time is checking the HTML code of a page with an unwanted link. It might tell me something, especially if the additional code is huge.

Are you up to date with anti-virus?That was my first thought, too. I am not very savvy, but I have good experiences with Norton, Panda and other anti-virus programs. Much better at detecting spyware than some anti-spyware programs. No firewalls on my comp. I see sumpin' funny, I run a check, I take care of the beast manually (I like that part best, huhuh...) and I'm off surfing again. You learn a lot that way as well. Check with your provider, too, if it's any good of course.

I dunno Adrian, IMO a Firewall is as important as an anti virus app if correctly used. And try Spysweeper it's better than Spybot or Adaware at finding a lot of spyware, also try window sweeper, it does a good job as well IMO

And if you do 'manuals' you get quite good at sniffing out .exe's and other weird stuff that don't belong in your prog files or registry. But I'll have a look at Spysweeper and Window Sweeper, thanks, Ah_Dut.

what you've got is a hijack. it's a specific type of malware. the best program for getting rid of this type of junk is a program called 'hijackthis' . the link can be found in the apothecary in the links thread. it's a very good program.

If you have the WINXP$P2 disable the programs in IE under tools/manage add-ons. If the AV or AS programs are finding things, but not removing them run them while in safe mode.
