View Full Version : What Is Your Highest Population of One City?
As the thread title stated, what's your highest population of just one city? Mine is strangley Athens, even though Sparta is my Capital, but Athens has like, 34,000 citizens, but in my previous Scippi Campaign (that which I abandoned as soon as I learned of the patch the would unlock all factions), my capital in there of Capua, had over 36,000+ citizens. Just wondering, if you can get a city of 40,000-100,000+ citizens. I'd love to have over 100,000 or even 80,000 citizens in one of my cities!
Also added up all my populations, totaling about 307,000+ citizens, not to shabby, but I had over 400K in my Scippi Campaign, strange!
Most I've had was 34K in Patavium in a Julii campaign. Squalor was horrendous. I was building peasants every turn and shipping them off for resettlement and slaughter.
I can't imagine trying to manage squalor in a larger city.
Guys, what is up with you & your squalor issues! My cities, even my largest, at 200% + loyal! I've never had any loyalty issues in my Spartan campaign, you guys just suck if you cant keep your citizens loyal lol!
I'm serious though, never had an issue, all of my city loyalties are at 175-250% + loyalty, and most of them are 30,000+ citizens. I have lots of 26,000 cities, but everyone is happy, & loyal.
So back to the main topic, how many people do you have guys in your cities! Like the largest city that is, and your total population of your whole cities if you like, be interesting to see the numbers. ~

Squalor alone is 125%! The governor has no population growth enhancing traits/retinue, might get even higher up with them.
The total pop in my empire is about 700k including all of Africa, Asia Minor and Greece.

In tarentum, the population is permanently stuck at 31,000 because of the damn squalor bug/problem.
The population in my cities also barely grows past 34,000 citizens. Once this level is reached plague spreads across the land...

Maybe Siris would be so kind to post a screen shot of his huge, pristine and totally loyal cities. After he posts that screen shot, perhaps he would deign to give us the benefit of his wisdom for maintaining pristine, loyal huge cities.
I would be ever so grateful to not suck as much as I do.

I just checked the end of my Scipii campaign game, heres some stats. Both Thebes and Alexandria were over 45k pop, Carthage was nearly 44k, and Memphis was 40k. After that none of the others top 40k but I have a good amount in low to mid 30s, then below that it starts to vary pretty widely. I did have Carthage as high as 46k earlier in the campaign though, that was with a general that had pop growth bonuses though.
According to the population ranking graph i'm at about 1mil people(its halfway between the 800k marker and 1.2mil marker). For a few interesting stays I make 37k through Farming, 4k through Mining, 121k through Trade, and 38k through Taxes. This is at 48 regions gained on the same turn I beat the game.
Also, I had one revolt the entire game. And that was because I didn't pay attention to Corduba after I took it. I also had two formely Carthaginian cities revolt back to me after losing them to the Egyptians. Squalor is certainly annoying, its as high as 125% public order minus in those 40k+ cities. But that doesn't stop me from holding them. Personally I like building up huge cities, its a habbit from civ. Oh, and one last little bit. I only had the plague strike a few times in my game, despite my huge cities. Infact it had been a very long while until a game event trigger it(Plague strikes Italy in like 126bc). Which was when I ended my game, I took that oppurtunity to march on Rome under the guise that the Senate couldn't deal with the plague.
But i've wandered off topic, there is a way you could get to 100k in one city I believe, but it'd require a bit of farming. First you remove all your govenors from your cities except for the highest population one. Then you pick a big group of regions(Egypt is perfect for this) and go on a conquering/enslaving spree. With large influxes of slave pop you should be able to hit 100k providing you blitzed.

I've never seen one past 50K. Pop'n increase usually is about .5%, and plagues/revolts will seldom stay at bay long enough to allow such a small pop growth to do its thing.
And I too wish for a screenshot of Siris' candyland of Sparta & friends! Must have taught the hoplites to dance and do halftime shows, to keep the masses entertained. ~D

Been just below 40k never above. Find that the best size is around 15k for your local vicinity and below 10k in the provinces (far from the capital). Exterminating rioting cities are more or less the income in the late game for me......
I dont know what the thing your talking about is, but they've never been close to rebeillion.
My key to make them so good? Build everything you possibly can! Just what I've been doing, working very well. If it isnt on yours, dunno.

It's really not hard. You have to balance growth with your ability to support that growth. The basic strategy is build all the happiness producing buildings you can, put in a good governor with high influence, and finally when the city has reached the largest city category and cannot add any new buildings to offset squalor, then set the tax rate so high that population growth is zero. And since taxes increase unhappiness, the final act is to provide a large enough garrison to offset the tax unhappiness. Basically once you've reached the highest city category, you want pop growth at zero, since if you don't the population will become so large as to make the city unmanageble.
I've had literally dozens of cities and no rebellions except when I've become lazy and not checked them each turn. You really have to watch when a good governor dies and rapidly have someone to replace him. I have never had to resort to the trick of massacreing populations except in one set of cirumstances. That's when you take over a larger enemy city. At that point, the culture penalty kills you and is hard to offset with a garrison. In that case you might have to get the population down far enough so that you can manage it. That's the only time I have to do this.
