The big factions like the romans have academies wich in return would produce educated men, governors would also gain economical traits from this but whats up with barbarian governors?I have these young governors that have nothing at all when it comes to managment and influence, how do they gain traits that boosts there management total?They just wont gain anything or am i doing something wrong?
Also every heir i get seems to become more useless generation after generation.

Try capturing a civilized town and using its structures, other than that an old Total War rule has been the better the general at command the more traits, other than that it just shows why the barbarians are so... barbaric, they lacked civilized institutions. Another way is to bribe the hell out of good roman governors so that you get economic generals. Main barbarian strategy for me, burn rape pillage and kill as much as possible as quick as possible so you are not so outclassed militarily.

In my few games I've found it tough to make general gain the traits and ancillaries I want them to. Influence and in particular Management is hard to come by and it would seem even more so for barbarian cultures.

Anyway I had a brief look and the trait sets which give Management are:
Public Faith, Austere, Energetic, Intelligent, PhlegmHumor, Miserly and Pragmatic

Some of those can be triggered like Austere and Pragmatic by having a "harsh lifestyle".
Conditions are:

EndedInSettlement
RemainingMPPercentage = 100
SettlementBuildingExists = governors_house
RandomPercent > 50

or

not EndedInSettlement
RemainingMPPercentage = 100
InBarbarianLands
RandomPercent > 90

Intelligent and Miserly appear to be determined when given a new general from coming of age/adoption/marrying/etc

You can find the info in the export_descr_character_traits.txt file in the Data folder.

As for Influence, IMHO the easiest way seems to be just going out to slaughter stuff and you'll get Victor/Famous Victor/Conquering Hero set of traits. Conquering Hero gives +6 Influence.

Getting a retinue member who increases Management for barbs is tough. I've checked most ancillaries but most of them exclude barb cultures. The only one I can think of is Civilized Slave (which needs a Market) apart from the priests of that particular of course (many priests give a Management bonus but I haven't checked if these are available to barbs).

The best way to get good traits as the Barbs is to never build the Tavern buildings... The Taverns provide lots of bad heavy drinking traits and bad retinue members, so I am unsure whether the 10% happiness bonus is going to be worth all that.

The next best thing is to use the Temple Priest retinue members. Some of them do provide some nice management bonuses.

Civilised barbarian....... is'nt that an oxymoron? :book:

Well if you want to civilise the barbarians play as the Julii and civilise them that way ~D

I think this is a bit of historical accuracy your going to have to live with here

The only thing you can do is win a lot of battles. Victories seem to get you more influence points for a barbarian general than a Roman general gets from his victories. Other than that, you just have to accept the fact your generals aren't as well-educated as Roman ones.

As Dacian and another time as Scythian, I captured Athen and make it my capital, hoping some of my teens will get admitted to the Academy, or pick up some good friends (retinues) later on.

No dice. My kids' GPA were too low. :furious3:

At age 31 my barbarian governor gained the "stern" trait wich gave him +1 management, its better then nothing i gues :balloon2: .
Will it help if i rebuild some of my buildings?
