View Full Version : The Senate decided not to give me any missions anymore

Posted this in the bug report thread too, but I'm not really sure if this is a bug or not.

Anyway, that doesn't matter, but this is what happened in my current Brutii campaign (normal/normal).
When I had destroyed the Macedonians, and kicked the Greek City states out of their main provinces, the Senate started pointing me to the remaining Greek provinces in Minor Asia. So first I took Pergamum (on the Senate's request) and sent an invasion force to Rhodes a few turns later.
I assumed that the capture of Rhodes would soon become a Senate's mission, so I decided not to wait for them and just attack the island.
My armies sieged the last Greek city, and one turn before I assaulted the city the new Senate mission screen popped up. Guess what? Yep, "capture Rhodes". No problem, dear Senate, look what I am currently doing for you. So, comes the next turn, I win the battle for Rhodes, so, yay, Greeks destroyed, another Senate mission fulfilled.
But instead of the "Senate mission fulfillled" screen a "Senate mission no longer valid" pops up. Oh, whatever, it doesn't matter anyway. What is even more strange is that in the next turn, one of the first screens that pops up is the one where the Senate orders me to capture Rhodes. Two or three icons/screens later the pop-up window says "Senate mission no longer valid". :dizzy2: This went on for about 50 turns or so (haven't counted them).
Then, after some conquests in North Africa and Northern Europe, I decided to attack an Egyptian army who's besieging my Pontic allies in Sardis. But me stupid forgot that I didn't have a military access pact with Pontus, so at that moment the eternal "Capture Rhodes" mission disappeared, and an angry Senate ordered my to get my army away from my allies' territory. Aha! So the Rhodes mission was finally over? Nope. After two "Blockade a port" missions those stupid Senators wanted me to capture Rhodes again. :furious3:
Well, at least my popularity with the common people is increasing so I guess one of next turns the "you can march on Rome" screen will pop up.
Positive side: I don't get annoyed by the Senate :grin2:
My conclusion: I like this "bug". It should be a feature.

Anyone else seen this?

Let Rhodes rebel and recapture it, it might trigger the mission succesfull screen.

I've seen this reported before. Something peculiar to Rhodes.

I haven't experienced this, but I noted that in my Jullii campaign, once I got very powerful (around 30 regions owned), the Senate barely assigned me any mission (or just a trade agreement from time to time). As soon as I started to bribe the Brutii's settlements (I'm shameless... ~D ), the Senate only threatened me (Give that settlement back, or...). Thus I guess that the Senate reduce their queries when you become popular enough with the plebians.

you bribed your brothers settlements away? I never even thought of that.

I thought I was being devious when I sent "a small number" of assasins to cause some havoc in Rome.

I was entitled, they threatened to investigate my family for corruption or something about money we had not properly accounted for. I wasn't listening I had to go for a swim in my illgotten gains. Again.

I have real problems with this - first time around on the campaign and I have about 38 territories (and keep losing money - another problem). I am sure the AI is trying to force making me an outlaw. One of the Brutii towns rebelled and before Brutii had besieged it, I stepped in did the same. Once I captured it, the Senate outlawed me (and I died so reloaded to before besieging the town).

Since then I have avoided anything that could get me outlawed, but I keep getting missions where my finances will be investigated, or my family will be investigated and I have now had 2 missions where my faction leader had to commit suicide or be outlawed. The time is about 156BC - when is the Civil War inevitable as I cannot help feeling persecuted.

You have 38 provinces already! The remaining provinces are Rome and that of your nearest Roman family. Don't wait for them laddy, attack attack attack!

I told you, I'm shameless ~;p That way, when I eventually got outlawed the Brutii were a minor threat. Anyway when the Senate asked me to hand out kindly their settlements back, they refused. I guess they didn't mind I go on ~D

Edit : I forgot to mention I had also used numerous spies and assassins to provoke riots.

Causing damage to a single key building is all it takes...

I never failed the investigation missions, do they fine you or? is the penalty being outlawed?

I think it became an issue because so many family members were very corrupt. I was losing a fortune.

In my limited experiences with Romans I found there are 2 categoris of Senate mission.

Category 1 is the regular missions, including "capture settlement A", "blockade port B", "gain protectorate status from C".

Category 2 is the urgent missions, such as "get out of your ally A's territory in 2 turns", "give back settlement B to Brutii", etc.

Category 1 and 2 are independent. If you've already received a category 1 mission, receiving a category 2 does NOT overwrite the category 1 mission. For example, I still have 3 turns left to capture Syracuse (Category 1), but Senate found my transgressing in Numidia, 2 turns max. to get out (Category 2). All right, I moved away that army in Numidia, so the Category 2 mission is fulfilled, and I didn't bother Syracuse. 3 turns later I still get a failed message saying I failed to capture Syracuse.

I guess both missions co-exist. Just the Senate panel only shows you the most recent one.

I didn't get outlawed because I left the settlement when they asked me to, but I've bribed it back in the next turn ~D and the Senate left me alone. However, I once got a message like "you were lucky, you had friends ..." and it prevented the Senate from investigating my family. Many were corrupted too, I was losing 20 K a year with corruption...
