View Full Version : Generals/stars
I think those stars are making general and his army to strong what is very unrealistic.
It spoils the game. My 10 stars general kicked ass out of Brutii 0 stars general and his army...
945 my men against 1210 Bruttii was solved with cca 150 dead on my side and 1200 dead on theirs....uuuu, how realistic.....
And how to play this game when every battle is victory, easy victory...Im so bored with the game at this moment and Im angry because I expected good game for 45 Euros not this crap.
Sorry but IM frustrated and I was waiting Rome for 2 damn years and now, here it is, UNPLAYABLE AND BOOOORING!!!!
Prople are talking about mods and patch but this game on its own should be something great, challenging but it isnt and I doubt taht patch will solve so many bugs...:(

Hello,
Give Total Realism mod a try ~:) I had the same feeling like you after days of continuous playing before the mod. But now the game is much challenging and enjoyable...to the modders great work! ~ Although some AI bugs still exists, they do pose a greater challenge now. I actually fear losing some battles and seldom escape with light casulties.
I will because game sucks hard this way, I would rate it 60% maybe...
Thnx for the tip;)
I downloadd 3.2 version and I will try it when Im back home at evning....Im gonna take a break from PC. I like riding the bike:), It cools me down...And this game really pissed me off:)

If I'm not mistaking, you play on normal difficulty settings, no wonder it's so easy. Maybe you should try another level.
In case I'm wrong then I apologize, and don't pay attention to my suggestion ~;)

H, VH combat modes are stupid and not enjoyable since they give unfair advantages to the AI, rather than improving it. I read a post some days ago from an experienced tabletop war gamer who had the same complains and would instead prefer soldiers with higher morale, discipline and speed instead of the supermen in RTW.
On the whole, the command rating of the generals is oversimplified. It was enough a few years ago in shogun but not anymore. I wonder if it is moddable..

Agreed that VH grants AI superman troops is stupid. However the problem with increasing morale without increasing att/def would only magnify the existing problem. AI troops will stay in the fight longer only to get slaughtered more by yours lol. I hope they would fix the battle AI to a reasonable level.
Yes, I play on medium (normal) and I dont like Hard or very hard because it only adds points to enemy soldiers like +7 to everything....
I like realistic games where a is a and b i b but where AI is reali INTELIGENT and game is really chalenge.
Btw. Thnx for the tip anyway;)
R. Ducky...they are slaughtered anyway because they are easy prey when routing and they present no threath then but If they stay in fight longer your soldiers KIA would be higher;)
Morale of enemy troops is to low in R:TW!!!
...one more thing...Im using Realism mod...its great...I just dont get it....why CA didnt made game like tahat from the start???
Wow. It will certainly help to understand a little game mechaism here, before making a swift conclusion.
Before getting into that, I've seen quite a few 7+ star AI generals, about 2-3 every long campaign game, and dozens of 4-5 stars, plus countless craps. Quite the same number in my family. ~:) I don't use craps to lead armies, but AI loves doing that. I also hate that. I seriously think AI should largely decrease the number of captain-led armies. That would be such a big improvement! (Or make us inable to see generals' ability, so you sort of have to guess what he is capable of from, maybe a list of "feedbacks" that you have available. That would be REALLY REALISTIC.)
Ok. Actually the VH difficulty helps you in this commanding star aspect. How? I assume everybody knows that command stars gives attack bonus. 10 stars give you 10 bonus, something like that.
All right smart kids - you know what I am going to say. You are complaining the AI too weak, because you are forcing the AI to play the VH difficulty!
VH difficulty helps AI to get 7 attack bonus in melee. So in VH difficulty, you are fighting at least 7-star generals throughout the game. If you face a 7-star general in VH, congratulations! His peasants are legions, and his jav. cav. are cataphracts.
In other words, if you play on medium, and you have 7 stars, AI has 0, it is exactly like a VH difficulty for AI. You can't really complaing the AI too weak - because you make them so. You should complain about yourself.
I don't see any validty of refusing let AI has 7-star generals in the game, while complaining the AI is too weak. Instead, I think it is very good to compensate the AI some commanding stars because they don't use a lot of good generals around.
The "realism mod" makes troops harder to kill (more hp) and rout (more morale), so you can't rout the AI that fast due to their fast casaulty. This way you have to kill them to much smaller numbers before they break. As you have to go through a longer melee, meaning you will suffer more numbers. That's all difference it makes. I am not oppose to CA making a game like that, but I remember all those historical battles that the HUGE, stronger army routs when there is only 10% casaulty --- they were real, too.
I know all that Maltz....Stars should give only morale upgrade and maybe, maybe attack and defence but not +10 for 10 stars general and I have 5 10 stars generals....had....because I dont play original game..
10 stars should give maybe +3 attack and thats that but improved morale, marching speed....
Its really stupid when Im able to rush at the enemy (twice bigger army) made of GOOD units and crush them with 1 injured soldier which had broken toe..ah....IT SUCKS SUCKS and SUCKS.....
Is there eny joy in that kind of victory? No!
And Maltz how many historical battles had routings after 10% cas.?
99% of the battles were long with heavy losses on both sides, not 1/10 ,like in R:TW!
Hello: ~:)
Yes, I also think the commanding star & difficulty system should mean something more complicated. Morale is certainly an important factor. However, I haven't found the current system too bad.
Just now, I had a 2-star general to siege a 7-star Dacia leader's last settlement. I killed a lot of his other unit except for his bodyguard, so I thought OK it is time to rush in. I had about 7-8 units of infantry.
Then, his bodyguard had the same heroic deeds as you mentioned - they chraged towards my 500+ men inside. First they ran through my hoplite phlanx spears and soon routed them, then stepped through a unit of barbarian warband merc. (who also uses spears) then rout them. Finally my support troops - those turbo "Thracian-look-alike merc." (the best infantry of Thrace B-something) was cut an big opening by his few horses. But he also got himself surrounded by those tough nude campers and fell.
My leader was blowing horns crazily outside. He has no guts to charge in. I was certain he would get killed.
You are very good that you developed a large numbers of capable generals and use them. Not many empires in history have ever done that. I am sure in any VH setting you will never be able to rush and crush like you described, if you just want to try for once. Instead, you will see quite a lot of the opposite happening especially when you face "the star". ~;)

I'm actually seeking figures like the ones you put in your example, in order to know the exact bonuses the AI gets when the difficulty level is set to H and VH. Where could I find them?

It was clarified by Jerome Grasdyke himself so there shouldn't be any doubt about it:

Easy - player gets +4 att, Hard - AI gets +4 att, VHard - AI gets +7 att
