I am playing Roman campaign as Juilus

Is there anyway which I can recruit elephants into my army? If yes, exactly where?

Look on the campaign map for elephants, if you see an elephant(kind of small and hard to see) you can hire a MERCANARY elephant unit any where in that territory as long as no one else has recruited 1 there, wich would be rare in my observations. If none are available the mercanary hireables replenish themselves every so often.

They are only available in african territories and Asia. I believe the closest spot for you to go is to Carthage if I'm right but be warned that's a hotspot and you might fair better treading on Numidian lands wich is trespassing if your not at war with them.

Also be prepared to shell out 4000 bucks and about 500 in upkeep for them.

You can also sometimes get them as a reward from the senate {major exotic unit or somesuch} . I don't think it is triggered by any specific mission , but it seems rare .

I have conquered two numidian provinces in which elephants should be available, and never seen one mercenary unit available. It must be at least 10 turns ago now ~

One of the text files has the mercenary data. Each region has a number of mercenary troop types associated with it. For each troop type, the file lists certain data about them: how many are available at game start, the maximum number that are available, and the replentishment per turn. Once a unit has been hired, the unit numbers replentish so many per turn. Only once a full unit has accumulated will it be shown as available for hire. Merc war elephants do not start the game as available. They have a very low replentishment. So, it will be some time in the game before any appear. Only one can be available at a time, in each region. Once that one is hired, it will be another long time period before another becomes available. While I think it is technically possible to find one for hire in the Syria region, and another in the Africa region, and another off in the east, I am not certain of that.

Major exotic unit is correct
Save the game the turn before you complete the mission, there are a few units that fit this description and you may not get the elephants first time through.

My current batch of roman elephants is v3 and running with my most evil general (10*'s but -5 morale you'd think he was a friggin' vampire or something).

Mercenary hiring data for North Africa
From data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/descr_mercenaries.txt

pool North_Africa
regions Mauretania Numidia Gaetulia Sahara
unit merc libyan infantry, exp 0 cost 350 replenish 0.1 - 0.15 max 2 initial 1
unit merc numidian cavalry, exp 1 cost 750 replenish 0.1 - 0.15 max 2 initial 1
unit merc balearic slingers, exp 0 cost 750 replenish 0.03 - 0.05 max 1 initial 0
unit merc elephants, exp 0 cost 4000 replenish 0.005 - 0.015 max 1 initial 0

as you can see, elephants have a replenishment of .005-.015: very very small compared to other mercs. They really don't come around often. If you like elephants as a Roman (and who doesn't occasionally), then just station a loser family member with some merc hiring ancillaries, and have him check in every 10 turns or so. When they do show up, it has been my experience that the AI won't buy them, possibly because those in the elephant areas don't often have 4000 to spare, or they don't appreciate the quaint subtlety of bellowing, psychotic elephants.

Now if you wish for more elephants, just raise the replenishment rate, or even have the initial # higher than zero. It could be a game imbalancer though, so when elephants are our cruel gods, and ivory pianos have been outlawed, don't whine to me! ~

Only place I've managed to find Elephants to hire was in Antioch... They served me well though, taking Capua and Rome almost by themselves... I even held off the civil war till I could ship them back to Tarentum from Antioch.

If I remember correctly I get mine at Tingi after I rob it from the hands of Spain ~D

Syria and North Africa are the only two mercenary recruiting pools where you can buy elephants. In the case of North Africa, I'm not sure how much space that includes. I've heard of people hiring elephants from Tingi to Thaspus, so maybe its the entire section North of the Atlas Mountains. You should be able to build your own wherever you see an elephant resource.

Can I only recruit merc elephants? Can Romans create their own Romans Elephants?

Also, can Merc elephants be replenish to full strength if suffer losses?

When the Senate says you are going to be rewarded a "major exotic unit", then it might be a merc. war elephant waiting for you. Don't fail that mission! :)

I personally think that if you capture a region that says you can produce elephants there, then you should be able to create elephants there, regardless of what your faction is.

Eh... Only if your faction does build elephants. Oliphaunts are like camels, you can train them only if you have both the ability and the resource. Only Parthia, Selucid, and Carthage can ever train elephants (am I missing anything? sorry). ~:)

If you badly want some super-cool elephants, be sure to press the ¬/`/¦ key in the top-right hand corner of your keyboard and type in Oliphaunt. You get an amazing unit of Yatsub Elephants, which are about five times as big. I've only ever tried it once.

Can anybody share this "cheat"?

Cheating to win and brag abt victory is unethical, however, cheat to discover the maximum potiental of the game is sure cool.... pls do share this cheat if anyone out there have any knowledge.

It only works quite occasionally. You have to have a general selected and outside a town, I believe. You also have to have done it NOT from a save game, and not on a game where any cheats have been used (I think).

it works now, it would be fun to start a contest were you only allowed to have: 1 one yoptsev (sp?!!?) unit, and 2 cav. units and a gen who's not supposed to fight at all.

the goal is too make a line of citys leading to rome from, mmm, lets say the faction on the top right (name?) in the fevest turns. runs for 1 week, winner gets "Lord Of The Yoptsevs" as title.

Today playing as the Scipii I got merc war elephants twice as a senate mission reward. Then when i took said war elephants to Celtiberia to help in the siege of Numantia the generals speech included a reference to them. It was something like,
"These barbarians will feel fear from our elephants, as they lack the proper skirmishers to deal with then." *cheering*

and they did the elephants killed about 300 gauls all by themselfs.
