Ok Koga,

My Japanese ain't too good as I have only been taking it for a month and a day...

but, I think I understood a good bit...

could you give "an official translation" of your original posting in a reply in this thread.
I think I got the first sentence, some/a little of the second, third, and fourth. The fifth sentence. and not really the sixth. (understood some words, but not the gist).

btw, you are using the long "o" = "ou" right?
in my japanese class, we are actually just doing double "o's" for romanized japanese.
(kyoutou=kyoto=kyootoo--this last one is used in our book).

Zen,

I think it's two different methods, I am in an official class but it's taught by teachers from Japan who write their own textbook collectively (it's still in manuscript form, not bound yet, it's revised every semester), but basically when dealing with Romanji it doesn't matter too much... turning the "ou" with the silent "u" from Japanese into "oo" in English spelling is still misleading (to me anyway) cause it implies an ooo! sound rather than an "oh" sound. So basically neither way you spell it in Romanji really reflects how it's said. So I just do direct letter to letter translation (my teachers taught it that way) so I don't forget how to spell it correctly when I'm writing it in hiragana.

Translation:
Because lots of people don't speak Japanese, let's only use this thread to speak it. Because I've only been studying for two years so far, I'm pretty bad. In another History thread, I saw a lot of people here can speak Japanese. I've never been to Kyoto, so tell me about it. A lot of friends have told me it's really pretty. Is anyone living in Japan right now?
