Simply put, if I play on the lower difficulty settings will the AI build less ships?

nope that should not matter

I'd have thought it would - if you turn down campaign difficulty, it makes the ai less aggressive, so i'd have thought they would produce less ships. Lowering the campaign difficulty makes auto-resolve battles easier as well - and that includes all naval encounters.

If only you could bribe ships!!!!!!

Oh how quickly you could turn the tides of the sea

We need mercanary fleets. Don't know how common they were but they were used

I was quite naive to put diplomats on the ship, dock them close to another fleet, and try to initiate a sweet talk over the decks... no dice. ~;)

On VH settings, I swear to you that you have a hard time at sea in case you're not a Roman faction.
I was wondering whether the melee bonuses were also applied to the AI ships. After losing many see battles even though I outnumbered the foes by 3 to 1, I think I got my answer.
That's the only thing I don't like in RTW, because you don't have any control on the battles at sea, these bonuses shouldn't be applied to the ships.

Yep, the VH setting is applied to the naval autocalc, even though it shouldn't be, or at minimum should have a selector toggle at the start of the campaign: easy, even, hard, ridiculous.

The whole naval autocalc should be reworked anyway to have more boats lost by each side, rather than just crew losses. And when you have overwhelming superiority it is unlikely you would lose many men at all.

I find it kind of funny that you can end a battle with a trireme with a crew of say 3. I guess thats enough for a rower on each side and some one to bang the drum, but I don't know about the rowing speed.

I totaly agree with you, it should be an option. Hopefully it will be fixed.
