I've heard of this with various movies like Pink Floyed the Wall, but I just finished watching a great sound-redub of Ran.
Basically, you play the movie DVD or VCR tape and a custom-made CD at the same time. Turn the sound from the movie off and use the CD as the sound. The background noises are still there, but there's new music and dialogue (in this case, in English). For the Pink Floyd movie it was just new music for the video parts.
Anyway, there wasn't much of a difference in the dialogue, and I'll always be partial to the original, but it was sort of cool, also.
