Civilization sold off to mystery buyer

Struggling publisher Infogrames nets $22.3 million by selling its powerhouse strategy franchise to an as-yet-unidentified company.

In Paris this morning, Infogrames, owner of Atari and publisher of the top-selling RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and just-released Sid Meier's Pirates!, released the earnings report for the first half of its 2005 financial year, which ended September 30.

However, tucked into the report was a bombshell: the company has sold off the rights to Civilization, one of the most successful and critically acclaimed strategy series of all time. Although Activision briefly held the license in 1999, releasing the widely derided Civilization: Call to Power, Infogrames subsidiary Atari had been publishing the series--and its numerous expansion packs--since 1996's Civilization II, and it had announced that Civilzation IV was in development last year.

In its earnings statement, Infogrames said, "After the close of the first half on September 30, 2004, the Group sold the rights to its Civilization franchise for $22.3 million, generating a onetime gain of 15.5 million euros." However, Infogrames did not identify which company bought the rights to the game, only that it had been sold. American Atari representatives were unavailable for comment, but speculation on various games sites as to the buyer's identity ranged from Activision to Civilization developer Firaxis Games.

For those interested in the rest of Infogrames' financials, the company said its consolidated revenue for the first half of fiscal 2005 was 277 million euros ($365 million), down from 314.9 million euros ($415 million) the previous year. The company tallied a loss of 32.8 million euros ($43 million) for the six-month period. Infogrames shares fell 12.2 percent in Paris after the news.

Without Civilization I wouldn't be here.

Let's hope Fraxis bought it, though there are rumours that PARADOX has bought the rights, the maker of Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Crusader Kings, Victoria and which recently bought "Diplomacy" and "Squad Leader" rights too.

If paradox bought it, I could die happy. Fraxis would be good too. Alpha Centauri was a great game. But if it's Microsoft /cries

i think we can all be sure paradox did not buy it, why?
A:paradox are a developer, not a publisher (these are the publishing rights i believe)
B:paradox i believe would be too small to foot such a bill.
C:paradox can make a better game themselves
D:i think it is firaxis, for the pure fact that the guys at firaxis are trying to create the new microprose.
thanks,
dessa

good thinking - add that Paradox is definitely not in a position to invest such a huge amount of money into a very high-profile franchise. They are doing great as they are, why would they go deep into debt to buy an acclaimed title with huge potential but also huge losses in case something goes wrong?

I wouldnt think Paradox have anything to do with it, but there something else we are missing. Let wait alittle longer and see what happen next for more clues.
