Unless I'm going blind no one has started a topic for this yet. Over at the .com forums The Shogun has posted this on the 26th:
Just to make absolutely sure every one is aware of the situation. Work is on going on the latest patch and there should be an official statement in the week or so.
For those who want to see firsthand here's the link (http://p223.ezboard.com/fshoguntotalwarfrm7.showMessage?topicID=15997.topic)
CA are also doing replacement unit skins at a rate of 1 per week, or so it I understand it. You can get the first one here (http://www.totalwar.com/community/newunits.htm).

Excellent news. I'll add this to the Forum Index (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=39371).

I missed the patch announcement. The new spartans look lush though.
Good stuff. Are they going to include these models in the patch? It would seem a bit silly to be making updated skins and not support them fully.
*Ringo*
Don't expect it Ringo. Why would they want to change their game that radically with a patch. They will merely give people a chance to change it themselves. There was after all a reason as to why this skin was used in the first place.

If I'm reading correctly the new models are purely optional for those who don't like the existing ones, a kind of customisation thing. If they were put in the patch then they would become sompulsery for everybody. I wouldn't be surprised if the first models given alternative versions are those which draw the most complaints; I've seen no end of topics on how the Spartans look like they are wearing bath robes/dresses.
I like it; it's a nice idea.

Regarding the models/skins: I expect there will be quite a few new skins in the patch itself, rather than just the customization skins. Why? Because there are a lot of units sharing the same skin. Look at the merc peltasts/ilyrians and merc bastarnae/dacians, most javelin men, most mounted javs--they all share skins & models. And if you read descriptions and check armour ratings you often find units whose greaves or shields or ratings for each don't match the descriptions. Unarmoured and somewhat armroured types sometimes share skins.
I suspect that CA intended to update skins all along. It is a relatively easy thing to do, but it does take time. So my hypothesis is that they put out the minimal number of skins with the game when it shipped so that they could focus on other areas that needed attention to have a working product.
