After playing a fair few factions, it occurred to me that it would be interesting to be able to control the rebel armies and cities scattered across the map. I can see quite a few reasons why this isn't possible, but just wondering if anyone has tried it?

the game will crash if you try to play rebels. so yes, you can unlock them, but no, you can't play them.
Actually it is possible to play rebels. I played it for about 20 turns and it didn't crash.
There are some strange/interesting stuff though:
-In the beginning you are at war with every other faction.
-You can build diplomats, but they are completely useless, because they don“t have any diplomacy options in diplomacy screen. So you will allways be at war with everybody else.
-Allmost every turn you have new random armies appearing around the world.

-At start you don't have any family members. No faction leader or heir. Later as rebel armies appier around the map you will gain some family members from rebel armies with generals and family member adoptions are also possible.
-These new family members dont't show up in family tree and can't be made faction leader or heir.

-You are losing money very fast, so you can't build anything.

Cheers for the reply Silvanus, I'll give it a crack. Presumably just need to move rebels to the playable factions.....

oops no rebels listed, how did you unlock them?
Go to www.twcenter.net, download Rome total realism mod 3 and a mod called new_province in the mods section, download these two and follow the steps to install them and you can play as the rebels.
you need RTR 3 to install New_province mod.
It works on my game without crashing so it should work.

Wow, that's cool. I played as the rebels in MTW, and the gameplay was very strange. Every so often you just got a new army, and you were scattered across the map.
I am wondering what kinds of buildings you can build in your cities?
Rebells as a factions shouldn`t belong to a culture, so do building options differe from city to city?

Slaves is the name used for rebels in descr_strat.txt. Move it to playable. You don't need RTR or anything.

Same happens here too.

Yes, it depends on the culture of the city in question. Greek buildings for greek cities and so on.
That's really interesting. I wonder if you can play it this way - disband almost everything to make yourself profitable (perhaps except the Amazons - they are too good to throw away), then train TONS of spies, and put them into enemy settlements - focing them to rebel. The AI don't garrison their towns with a lot of troops except sensing big armies marching close. If you have 10 spies with 2 eyes, that will bring down the public order by 100%. If you have 20 x 2 eyes, then it will go down by 200%!
After the rebellion, you can immediately sally against the stack, killing them. Then march your spy horde to the next target... Har har har. ~

I've played the rebels before for over 100 turns. It's very interesting, and rather challenging, since you rarely get to form your own armies. Your financial situation will fall apart almost instantly, and you can't engage in any diplomacy (as far as I could tell). Every turn, you have a great chance of getting more units in the form of rebellions and brigands, but of course these are all scattered around the map.
Everyone hates you, and will go out of their way to attack, ambush, harass, irk and vex you. Battles become much more challenging, because you will at best be commanding an army made from as many small brigands as you could gather.
You start with no family members, but will usually get one in a rebel stack, who will then proceed to become the benefactor to several more family members. My rebel family tree is bigger than my legitimate family trees!
You seem to share the Roman tech tree, because you can build the Roman units. But since you more than likely will be in the red for much of the game, it won't matter. The total lack of money issue is actually very neat.
You will never complain about squalor and public order, because PO at 0% is A-OK! We should add a rebel/slave faction guide in the RTW guides section. I'd love to see how everyone handles the situation differently.

I remember hearing that only 20 factions can be considered playable at one time in the files. So, if that's true, those who have all except SPQR and rebels playable will already have the maximum. The first time I tried the rebels, it crashed. I then modded out the Numidians, and put slave in. My rebel campaign hasn't crashed yet. Has this idea of a 20 faction maximum been mentioned before, or did I dream it?
Slaves is the name used for rebels in descr_strat.txt. Move it to playable. You don't need RTR or anything.
Bloody lovely! Works perfectly and quite fun.
Although you can't build anything you can still get all your little armies together to have full stack rebel armies!!

Yup that worked fine for me Silvanus - interesting to play, but hard to keep track of all the new armies popping up :)
I just had a try with the rebels. The only file we need to modify is (starting from your RTW main directory):
./Data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign/destr_start.txt
And move "slave" from the nonplayable section to the unlockable section.

Rebel is very fun to play. Here are a few tips based on a few hours of playing:
(1) No town will "go rebel" against you. So you can always tax highest, and you don't need to leave any garrison unless you want to defend against an invasion.
(2) You can move your capital from Tara (which is Ireland) to a more cetral location, say, Athen. This way you can reduce some corruption due to distance to capital. (p.s. Defending Athen against hordes after hordes of other Greek forces are very fun.)
(3) You can actually be earning tons of money as the rebel. First you want to decide which towns you don't want to defend - and too far away from your goal. Then you can disband the local garrison for good. Warband is very expensive to feed - and peasants are just useless. So you can get rid off a lot of them at the very beginning.
(4) If you don't mind bribing, a rebel diplomat (disguised in the color of various factions) is the most horrible weapon for the rebel. Almost anything you bribe will love to join you. Wow.
(5) The first easy targets are:
- Asia minor. You have Cretian archers & Rhodian slingers on the mainland, plus some naked fanatics. You can quickly take over the Selucid & Greek towns there.
- Sidon - Jerusalum area. You have powerful cavalry (camel) archers there. HA is god in RTW. If you take the Selucid capital, you can even produce HA there - meaning sooner or later you will take over Rome.
- Germania. There are tons of rebel forces in the barbarian zones. You really want to watch out for the spearwarbands at the town center, if you didn't bring archers. ~D
I only played a few years but are causing havoc in a lot of places. Now I just wish I have any family member around to develop... ~
