I tried giving a powerfull charge effect to cavalry's primary weapon: a lance, and a powerfull normal attack for their secondary weapon: a sword.

problem is that the AI doesnt switch weapons (the player can by alt+clicking), so their cavalry keeps using lances in close combat, while the player cav annihilates them with swords.

Any chance there is a way to make the AI use secondary weapons ?

I don't think so, since all units should do this automatically I imagine the function is hard coded. Missile cavalry certainly doesn't seem to have a problem with this. In the hands of the AI cavalry units like Greek Militia Cavalry and Early Eastern Generals easily switch quite easily between their primary missile weapon and their secondary melee weapon.

If your observations hold true for all 'melee only' cavalry units then this is a rather serious 'bug' or oversight on CA's part. Hopefully it's just limited to cavalry. As far as I can tell infantry units (i.e. pikemen) don't seem to have a problem switching to their secondary weapon when the enemy is too close for comfort.
