What is, for you, the best bonus for
a STW clan ?
cheaper archers, ashigaru, castles, cavalry ...?

For me, with Uesugi, the archery bonus is great.

The best bonus would have to be the cheaper monks that Mori get. Mori well and truly need this bonus when they come up against the Hojo horde as well.

I think cheaper cavalry, since I'm less concerned about the wasted money when I manage to get them all killed (again)!

The Takeda "cheaper cavalry" perk is the most economically effective, since cav units are the most expensive in the game (and it actually applies to three units, as opposed to one). The Môri monk bonus is very useful as well, for a munchkin at least. But I have to say that the Oda ashigaru bonus gives the best long-term flexibility, as it applies not only to YA, but Arquebusiers and Musketeers as well! As these units can also be trained at a higher starting honor at Owari, Oda is one of the few clans that really benefit from going Christian and getting guns.

As a footnote, the Imagawa ninja bonus is useless.

The Clans according to Kanzaki

I will rate the clans according to versatility, economic impact, and strategic value (as determined by me- hey, it’s just my opinions http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif )

1) Uesugi: SA are only one unit, and saving 25% on one unit, while useful, is not tremendously advantageous- especially in the highlands the Uesugi hail from, where well-placed YA can rout them. You save little in the way of koku for a unit that ultimately performs a peripheral, not a core, function. Rank: 6 of 7

2) Hojo: The speed with which they can 'tech up' is nothing short of evil. Rather than pinching your koku, you can comfortably pump out YA, YS, and SA from Shimosa while building up to a fortress or so, and then spreading like a plague when teched-up high-honor troops take the field.
Very cost-effective, especially when building castles along your frontiers. It’s a long-term gambit, but hey- that’s WHY you have the Horde!! Rank: 1 of 7.

3) Takeda: Unlike the Uesugi, the Takeda bonus applies to three very versatile units (CA, YC, HC), and saving those koku can play a major role when outfitting your armies. Especially if you’re a daimyo who uses a lot of them! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif Rank: 2 of 7

4) Imagawa: Who thought this one up? They should have thrown emmissaries in with this, or maybe they could produce geisha faster, something… Overall, 25 koku per Shinobi and 50 per Ninja (who die in droves no matter how carefully cultivated!) is neither cost-effective nor a lot of fun. The time outlay in building ninja is not something I personally take a great deal of pleasure in. Rank: 7 of 7.

5) Oda: Very, very useful. While the actual koku-per-unit factor is low, the sheer numbers and versatility of YA and Teppo is not to be overlooked. The Oda daimyo can spend his koku on other developments in relative security (who needs shinobi when you can save $$ on border towers?). However, only if you’re a big fan of the Ashigaru hordes. Rank: 3 of 7

6) Mori: Personally, I got sick of the Uber-Monks a long time ago. They are incredibly powerful, and add to that a discount and armories and you have a very powerful clan here. Too powerful for me, although they are a nice challenge while you build those armories and temples. Since their bonus applies to monks, though, use them if you like WM, avoid them if you don’t. Rank: 5 of 7

7) Shimazu: Interesting… like the Uesugi and Mori, their advantage lies in a single unit. However, given that they begin with a +1 honour province for ND, and the fact that no one can have ND until they accomplish The Event, I separate them from the other “one-unit” clans. I also prefer ND to WM persoanlly, so their advantage can be quite useful. Rank: 4 of 7

Personally I like the Mori advantage. That's why I always play as Mori. The Hojo advantage leading to The Horde is more unfair than the WM, I think, but . . . Kanzaki is right - Mori is the way to go if you like monks!

Kanzaki,
I respectfully disagree.

1. Mori - Love them or hate them, monks are the best and most versatile units in the game.

2. Oda - run through these guys like water and the faucet never shuts off.

3. Takeda - this is a tough one. I could think of reasons to place this one first to fifth. Like the aspect of it applying to 3 different units even though.

4. Shimazu - is another tough one. Just not as versatile as the ones above it, but still a pretty decent advantage.

5. Hojo - I don't agree with Kanzuki on this one. The reason Hojo techs up so easily is beacuse he has the richest land and an unreasonable strategic advantage against Uesugi. Realistically, expenditures on castles pale in comparison with unit training. If anything, you may have persuaded me to raise it a couple notches.

6. Uesugi - archers are very useful, but they never take enough casualties to warrant replacing constantly. Personally, I'll train archers for the first few years and they last just about the whole game.

7. Imagawa - this one is just lame. I was wishing they would change this one to YS or Nags. Ninja are pretty ineffective to warrent even 150 koku. Shinobi are somewhat of advantage if you train a swarm of them.

I use to love the Mori Clans bonus. But now I think that the Takeda Clan;s bonus is the best. You get horses right from the start and they are cheaper. I use the blitz method fo just attacking and never stopping. Takeda cavalry is perfect for this kind of strategy.

the advantageous clan has got to be Imagawa and that split-land base thing and especially those realy useful ninjas! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

but seriously, they're all pretyy equal, but Mori has the best up-front andvantages in that they get cheaper monks, readily accessible armories, and more defensible borders (once you get rid of Takeda) than other clans.

Mori clan seems to be the first for manu players...
I must admit, although I like archers, that the mori's bonus is great :
* 25 % for cheaper archers Uesugi means :
300 - 25 % = 225 koku for archer
(you save here only 75 koku)
* 25 % cheaper monks for Mori means :
500 - 25 % = 400 koku for 1 monk unit
(you save here 100 koku / unit !)

It's with Takeda's bonus one of the best "Price" bonuses, no ?

My favorite clan bonus would have to be Takeda, love that cavalry for the blitzkrieg
campaign.Getting Takeda Shingen, honor 6 general,is a nice bonus.Having two ports, two castles at the start one with iron deposits for an armoury, plus two provinces to build mines;I'll take the men in black anytime! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'd say the Takeda cav bonus for reasons already mentioned.

The Oda bonus is also nice as it applies to ALL ashigaru including teppo. Build a legendary palace, spear dojo, and swordmaker in Owari and you can raise some very nice infantry on the cheap! Then add a trading post and get high morale teppo.

This thread is getting repetitive. Anyway, the Oda Ashigaru are easy to overdo: they might do as well (or even better) in melee than the others' YS, but they still have that shoddy peasant morale. (Unless you build that Legendary Palace, which means building a Citadel - just to get Ashigaru.)

Ironically, the Oda are also one of the clans who stand to benefit the most if they forego the teppô and remain Buddhist: they have Kii, the province producing the famous WMs of Nara. Oda is a flexible clan; you can play them in almost any way you see fit and still win.
