Kagemusha is pretty cool, but I think I was more impressed by Seven Samurai.
I can't find anywhere around here that has Ran! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif Stupid Blockbuster drove out all the small rental stores in my burb.

Well, the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com (http://www.imdb.com)) has this page (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0042876) on Rashomon, and you can read customer reviews and buy the DVD on Amazon here (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/video/6303073107/customer-reviews/102-5756203-0194525).

Dreams was a good one, although not in his usual samurai genre.

I forgot to mention 1950's Rashomon, which is perhaps my absolute favorite. It is Kurosawa's first great international success, as well as that of perennial Kurosawa star, Toshiro Mifune.
Also in the film was Kurosawa favorite Takashi Shimura (Ikuru, Seven Samurai).
It was remade in the US as a pretty good film with a Mexican bandit replacing the part of the ronin. I forgot the title.
This film kicks major shiri!

Honestly
Akira Kurosawa is one of the best directors ever!
Most Directors acclaim him, and to look at his work which spans nearly 50 years back is achievements which surpass any in the international scene at that time.
My personal favourite is Seven Samurai. and a close second is Ran.
It is a pity noone in Japan is eager to follow in the great man's footsteps.

There was a Kurosawa film festival in London last week but I was busy and didn't catch a single one. I would have liked to have seen THrone of Blood cos I haven't seen that one yet.
Yojimbo is far and away my favourite.

Answering Hirosito's question is more difficult than I thought.
The more I think about Kagemusha and Ran, the higher they climb in the "Kurosawa Favorites" chart.
Kagemusha because of the mixture of humor and humanity, and General Baba.
Ran because of such memorable moments as the silent seige and Lady Kaede's offscreen death. Also the character of Kaede herself is wonderful. The more I see the film, the more I sympathize with her, rather than the Ichimonji clan. I think her death is one of the saddest moments in film history.

I don't know if anyone else caught the rather black humor of Ran...
Intentional or otherwise, there are just some really funny scenes...
one being the young blind man and his sister when they are walking and she says...
"look, our castle"
"Where sister?"
"Over there." (as she points)...
sad, but still.... from an abstract perspective, funny....
Also, the jester is just... brilliantly done..... A VERY different character than the one in Shakespeare... in the sense that he represents something a bit different....

It's really hard to pick a favorite. They all have their good points and whatnot but if I had to pick a favorite it would be Stray Dog! Just kidding- NOT my favorite.
RAN RAN RAN (THRONE OF BLOOD is a CLOSE second)I love King Lear in most of its versions but RAN is the most imaginative to date. (Isn't TOB a version of MacBeth?) Some critics have said that Mifune would have made a better Lord Ichimonji but you know what they say about critics,
"Those who can't do...REVIEW!"
and BTW I know this has probably been recommended before but I rarely read EVERY single post in a forum before I open my mouth so here it is...Kurosawa's Something Like an Autobigraphy, I think is the title but if you're a Kurosawa nut like me you'll enjoy reading his anecdotes (many humorous, others poignant) on the various productions and some interesting insights about his childhood.
