How to fight sap points

What is the best way to fight sap points? Seems like no matter what I do, it is always too late too little...

Just retreat into the streets and have a right proper brawl, ambushing from alleys etc. Especially good if you have infantry capable of a phalanx.

Use flaming arrows against the sap point. If you can set it on fire, it will collapse.

Is it possible that flaming arrows could reach the sap point?

I do know that the flaming arrows can easily destroy my rams which were closing to the gates.

Flaming arrows from Archer Auxilia and Cretan archers might be able to reach a sap point. I've actually never tried. If you can position them correctly, onagers can make short work of a sap point.

The only time I saw the AI use a sap point, my Aux-Archers took it out quite quickly with flame arrows from the wall opposite it.

Update: I have now tried this again and youy guys are correct. If you position your archers strategically close to the sap point and you can manage to keep them on target, they seem to be able to take them out quite easily, even though at first it looks like they are not doing any damage. Just keep them firing and all of a sudden the whole thing breaks down very quickly...
