View Full Version : What's with all the whiners?

Developers make games as well as they can to their vision of what the game should be, but they are just games. Quit the teeth gnashing and play the game.
Whiner categories:
1. The Mad Skillz Whiner
-"This game is too easy for someone as smart and talented as me. I only use peasants now to keep it fair, but I still win every battle, routinely defeating armies of Praetorian guards and war elephants with 1 drunken peasant. I'm taking the game back to Best Buy"
2. The "I'm smarter than you." Whiner
-"In one battle I noticed that the skirt on the Seleucid Silver Legionnaires was 2.6 cm above the knee. This is incorrect. The correct distance was 2.2cm. What were the stupid developers thinking? They should have consulted with people like me, or to be precise, me. I have removed the program from my drive until this error is fixed. It is now sitting on my shelf between my copies of Esoteric war machines and The Big Book of Pocket Protectors."
3. The Ignorant Whiner
-"This game sukks. War elephants Rock, but my Roman doods can't make any. What's up with that? I'm taking it back to the warez site."
4. The Nationalistic Whiner
-"I've read that the ----- created some super elite troops that totally kicked butt. They should have been implemented. The fact that they were left out is obviously American bias. I'm sending the game back to the mail order company."
5. The Sheep Whiner
-"I heard lots of people complaining about this game. I'm just like you guys. I'm complaining too. Please be my friend. I'll get rid of the game. honest. Just tell me how."
Every game has problems. Legitimate complaints, are just that legitimate. If you can't tell the difference, ask your mother.

i think alot of critisism is towards the MANY bugs, & not the actual game play,
i love this game, its the best game this year(hl2 was a let down), yet it shouldnt have been released with so many bugs, did the testers not see these bugs? but i do agree sometimes we need to STFU & just play.
Did you join the forum just to tell us off or have you got anything else to say.

I'm not sure if I'm talking to you personally. Am I? Which category are you in?

I think he just wanted to have a whine!
I a forum dedicated to a particular game I think its OK to have a whine about things you do not like about that product. It is also nice to praise the good parts.
To whine about the whiners is not useful or relevant and is called trolling.
Whilst I thought the original post was quite amusing, I think the poster actually forgot a category:
6. The Whiners Whiner
-"Geez, I can't believe all you guys are whining about a game. I mean, what does whining actually achieve, other than potentially a better product for the customer, improvements and ideas for future releases, and helping to release pent-up frustration??! Why can't people just accept buggy products the way they are? In fact, I think I'm going to create a list of the various types of whiners just to illustrate my point!"
;)
I think Beergator has a point. There has been a lot of whining about the game. Some of it justified some, some defo not. All you have to do is look at the opening pages in the Forum and see complaint after complaint.
Beergator was rather witty in his opening para. I would not count this as trolling.
The game as it stands out of the box is an excellent game. None of the bugs are show stoppers. Some of them may be very annoying (group run anybody) but there appear to be ways around all of them The game itself is massive both in scope and the level of detail and is bound to have some teething problems.
By the way I am not acting as an apologists for CA. Sure the game has some bugs, but I think the amount of work that has gone into this stands to the developers very well.
Sure the AI is pretty crappy in certain situations. However looking at one thread (SLYSYP’s one) giving out about the AI not attacking or the computer giving a “doubtful courage” vice to me seems to be a fairly petty complaint.
Sure the AI is predictable, but that is only after you have played it lots of times. Think of the amount of different situation s the game can have. Sieges, Defending, attacking, terrain, moral, HP all these are variables in this excellent game.
I don’t know what MP is like (dying to try it, but alas no broadband). But then the possibilities will be endless in battle.
Anyway having played all the Total War series, I must say that this is by far their best edition yet. All I can say is (to coin a phrase from the Home World boards) WILL GIVE LEFT NUT FOR EXPANSION PACK…………
c'mon guys, it is a joke. i fall into at least one of the whiner categories and i found the original post highly amusing. if we can't even laugh at ourselves anymore than what do we have left?
Oh and I forgot to say that it would appear that a lot of the bugs are to be fixed in a patch.......... You cannot get more pro-actve than that.

Why are you whining about the whiners? All you meta-whiners just make me wanna whine about you a lot. And back again. :help:

Ha, funny post. As for my two cents, I'd have to say I love the game. I really look upon the initial offering much like one of the settlements within. The longer one tends them, the better they get until you've got gold. The predecessors of RTW evolved and still are to this day.
Think of the potential this game has vs what it lacks in the moment. Sooner or later a master modder will address many of the legitimate issues folks have with the game.
Whatever the case may be, I still get a thrill watching a unit of Urban Cohorts crashing into the side of a unit of chariots up close and personal, or Pratorian cavalry hitting the rear of a phalanx, POW!!!
I'll insert a piece I wrote in another post in which I describe how to beef up the game in the meantime...
If you have or can get the crack, do so and then install Microsoft Netfix to unlock the cheats. Add about 2 million denari into your treasury and set your emmissaries walking the earth giving megadoses of Rome's (or whomever you select to play) love. Think of the possibilities: Gaul with a bursting at the seams treasury, a filthy rich Macedonian or Seleucid empire ect, ect... Lavish enormous sums of cash on your future enemies. Do this my friends and watch what happens...
This won't fix the rebels unfortunate tendency to be shot to ribbons and just stand there, or a few of the other common gripes about the gameplay but you may get a suprise here and there. Be patient and I'm sure in no time, one of the reliable modders will have a better version to play with.
In the meantime we have no Woberts, no Weginalds, no Wandys, no Wichards...

Just another Newbie post.
Newbie to the Game.
Newbie to the Org.
Though I must say his categorizations are interesting. I dont' seem to fit into any of them??
NewsFlash: NOTHING that is occuring in this Forum is *new*. Except the HUGE influx of Newbie Casual Gamers ("NCG") who are coming into conflict with the Hardcord Gamers and the Hardcore Grognards. I believe that would be category 1 and 2 of your list.
NewsFlash: The Hardcore have ruled this Forum and Game since inception.
Oh! There's is one other new development: Whinners whinning about whinning.... ~
---
TS, wonders why do you people read the so-called *whinning* threads? I don't get it. You could simply skip them. You can also start you're own Fanboy(??) type threads. What's the problem?

this is a very elite'ist attitude. some of us may be new to this forum & we may not have a thousand & odd posts under our names, so does that make us less worthy of an oppinion. ive been playin medievel & shogun probably as long as you, but never felt the need to discuss it on a forum so am i still a NCG, i think not. rome blew me away 1st time i played it & so i wanted to share my thoughts & listen to others.
its attitudes like this that have kept me out of forums before ~:grouphug:

.com is actually the other way.
To be perfectly honest I actually find the majority of newbie posts more interesting, as they often bring a fresher attitude to message boards as opposed to the stale curmudgeons (thanks CFP for the word) :book:

I was going to reply quite politely and succintly to this post, but then realised you are from the U.S, and so realise it's pointless, given my experience on other forums.
(Yes i know it doesn't apply to the majority of U.S citizens on forums etc, but the few always seem to be more vocal! ~:) )
Guys... don't bother, TS has been like this since I can remember, and that is years. I have tried my best, but see if I have done any difference... So before you start more on it, just let him ramble.

Oh Butcher,
I know that just over half of my country's voters went for that sneering incompetent buffoon, but we're not all irretrievably stupid as you sort of pointed out. Is this forum really so populated with American smackdown, loudmouthed louts? I refer to no one in particular by the way.
Er my apologies to Bush supporters, I’ve certainly done some dumb things in my life as well…
The .com thing went way over my head… Please explain, Tarzan not understand…
Don't let this degenerate into politics... Eh, wait a moment, this is already quite low. But it needs not go lower.

good point.
u have nothing to worry though - all NCG wil soon vanish and we will see less to no pointless off topic posts like the first one in this thread.

Well I guess if CA only wanted to sell to overly grateful people like you then they could sell a half a dozen copies or so. Since they didn't do this and sold to everyone including the whinners, I guess they (and you) will just have to listen to the whinning.

Well, it's very funny ~:) to read all your comments, but personally for me this game is still the best. Of course there are many bugs, but in RTR 4.0 I really completely enjoy the game (play as Carthage and you'll see how hard it can be ~;) ) Best of luck.
P.S. Stop whining, start playing :charge:

I must have missed the staff memo that says "Hardcore Gamers" and "Hardcore Grognards" are to be treated as gods and new patrons are to be kicked in the groin at every opportunity. Until such a time as I see this kind of change in Org policy officially implemented, new patrons are to be treated with as much respect as our most venerable veteran, just like it has been from the beginning of the Org.
To those of us still on our high horses, please dismount and behave. Thank you very much.
BTW, I thought the "Whiner categories" was pretty darn funny.
The skirt is ok, but the pilum is all wrong.

Yes, at times, we all need to take ourselves less seriously. ~D
But why are we here? ~
:charge:
We come to discuss our victories and defeats, likes and dislikes, or to obtain some inspiration. Along the way, we notice that this forum is generally receptive to intelligent and insightful discussions, whatever its conditions.
I equate this decription of patrons' comments, "whining", as either an uninformed apologist's negative term for criticism or simply trolling. While listing the positive elements of a game may encourage developers, criticism refines the product and its successors. And, fellows, this is each and every total war player's wish. ~

Beergator, nice very amusing post. definately made me giggle.
I also agree this definately wasn't trolling it was intended as a joke. I assume, beergator, that you have been looking at other forums too.
ToranagaSama, sorry, I also feel that this "I'm better that you" attitude doesn't do you any credit. I may be a "newbie" on this forum but I have already been an active member of several other forums and have several thousnd posts to my name elsewhere.
Does this mean that all newbies are NGC's? Again I have been a gamer for 25 years and therefore would consider myself a hardcore gamer. personally IMHO this is just trying to cause an argument. Chill bro.
Personally I feel I am a category 2. now, where is my Big Book of Pocket Protectors ~:)
