Gday
I have been doing kendo for 2 and a half years now and would like to know if any other kendoists out there have any good or interesting sites they could perhaps share. Im also interested in any bogou sites (particularly japanese ones) and any general info ones they think are good.
Thanks
I hope to learn someday. I had a friend who studied it but he went on to throw a cream pie in the Primeminister of Canada's face and had to go to jail for awhile. Haven't seen him since.
He did tell me that he got in trouble at the airport once for bringing his practice sword or bokan I think he called it with him, even though it was dissasembled.

I've never heard the term "bogou" used before. Is it another way of saying budo or bugei?

Bogu means armour
Dogou means equipment
Unless I have got it really wrong..

I don't know much about New York (I only visited there a few times).
I'm sure there are some dojo's in the New York city.
If not try the local universities. They might have a 'club' going.
As for Kendo equipment.
You should always try it first then purchase the equipment if you are enjoying the art/sport.
Since the equipment do not come cheap.
I personally buy them from http://www.kendoshop.com
Or order them through my dojo.
For starters you'd need the bokken and perhaps a Shinai.
You do not necessarily need the kendogi and hakama (uniforms) to start off.
Anything that doesnt restrict your movement is fine.
Kendo books:
'This is Kendo' by Junzo Sasamori & Gordon Warner
'Kendo the definitive guide' by Hiroshi Ozawa
-you can pick these both up at your local 'Borders'.
Try to check them out and see which book you are comfortable with.
Some concentrate on the tradition and some concentrate on the kata.
Its good to find a balanced book. Or better yet buy both! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
I wish your brother the best of luck! Scipio3
