View Full Version : RTW Install
I was told there used to be a sticky on RTW installation. Was this the case? Is the old thread still findable or viewable?

There was another, when the game first came out that dealt with RTW install issues.
You could describe your problem here, there are many talented guys (such as me self ~;) ) that could probably help you with whatever issues you have with your installation.

Thank you Sir,
I am at a loss. Here is what I can tell: when attempting to install RTW the first three disks run through their install protocol, then I am asked to place the first disk back into the tray. I note it goes through the "Registering Product" and then starts the "Publishing Product Information" then...crash. I have attempted this several times, always with the same result. I am not sure what to do to solve this.
I have copied all the disks to an open folder on my desktop and attempted an install from there...failure.
I have also tried closing all the background applications, again...failure.
My system is compossed of the following:
Microsoft XP
Nspire 300W P/S
AMD 2500+
Asus A7N8X-X
PC2700 DDR
WD 80gig HDD
Liteon 52X CDRW
Radeon 9600 XT
Please Help
Well it isnt ya system, thats for sure, but let me run a few tests and ill get back to you, also maybe someoine else has some advice ^^

Thank you. I was wondering if the issue wasn't tied to the "Publishing Product Information". If so, would it be possible to remove this and still have an installable and viable game. In any case, I defer to you since my computer skills are few.
Hmmm, seems my problem is beyond the ken of the board's collective computer wise.

I copied the post where you included your specs to the Apothecary
Many talented ppl there, but I think Kraellin (the mod) is on holidays for a bit.
edit: I see you already posted in the Apothecary so i deleted mine; might be slow going to get replies over the holidays.

Thanks for the help. I am at a loss as what to do. I attempted an install on a friend's computer, just to test the cds, and had no problems. His systm is quite a bit older, but things worked fine. I wonder if it is possible to remove the "Publishing Product Information" from within the game as this is the point where the crash always occurs, but I don't know where that stuff is located.

All I can think of is the usual stuff.
Right version of dx9, updated drivers for all components, cd drive is working as expected on everything else, RTW:Demo uninstalled (didn't matter on mine but some ppl report it as a problem)
Good luck! ~:)

Three things, after browsing thru the R:TW readMe:
1. Are you the Administrator on the machine that crashes (readMe says you must be)? I'm suspicious of this, since the same discs installed OK on your friend's machine.
2. This bit (from the readMe) might be helpful:
"...
Authenticated Drivers
If your drivers are authenticated by Microsoft, then DX9 may try to verify if they have expired by connecting to the following URL crl.Microsoft.com. This is a Microsoft Certification check for expiration of Certificate site. This could be triggered when the game is run, as it interfaces with the video and sound drivers installed in Windows. This feature of Windows can be turned off in the following way:
Start Internet explorer and click...
Tools | Internet Options
Click the ADVANCED TAB, then scroll down to Security:
UNCHECK the boxes that say "CHECK FOR PUBLISHERS CERTIFICATE REVOCATION" and "CHECK FOR SERVERS CERTIFICATE REVOCATION(requires restart)" ......"
3. Silly question: the crashing machine is actually connected to the internet, yes?

Thank you for the reply. I will give your suggestions a go. As far as silly questions are concerned: I am too ignorant to get any pass. My computer is on a DSL connection. I haven't actually had the internet turned on while attempting any install (as this has never affected any other game install) but I did try it once with the internet active after reading your post, but got the same result. Alas.
Bloody game! I'm still no farther than before. I unchecked the authentification Drivers as suggested, I have installed new drivers and still nothing. I am at a loss. Why is this "Publishing Product Information" stopping me?

Sorry for your troubles, mate. I wish I were smarter in these matters, and could tell you "Do this..." and solve your problem. But I'm not.
This is what I think is happening: after RTW has (almost) completed installing, it tries to register itself with Activision (the game publisher). So it 'pings' Activision, in effect saying: "Hi, I'm Pindar, with a game to register". Activision responds with "OK, what is your product info (serial number, maybe your IP address, etc)?"
That's where you crash. So I'm guessing that your machine 'thinks' that Activision's response is an unwanted intrusion or attack on it. To protect itself, your machine closes the entire process.
IF that is what is happening, maybe lowering your security settings temporarily, and turning off any firewalls and virus-detection programs (again: temporarily) would do the trick. The idea being to open the door to Activision.
I admit that this is merely a shot-in-the-dark solution. If you try it, please let us know the outcome.
Good luck
Kukrikhan,
This is a copy of a post I just wrote on what I think is a ralated thread:
"I haven't been able to play RTW yet. I have been working with some of the minds here and on the .net site to figure out the solution. Yesterday, a fellow on the .net site mentioned he had the exact same issues as I namely: the game would install up to the "Publishing Product Information" and then crash. He found that the problem related to SP2. He uninstalled his SP2, installed the game and then reinstalled SP2. This seemed to work for him. My computer is only a couple weeks old. It came with SP2 already part of the operating system. I am unable to unistall it. I was thinking of contacting the computer store (which, in my case, is in another state from myself) and have them send me a copy of XP with SP1 and then attempting something similar to what I just described. If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate it. I am fairly ignorant of computers: I typically only know enough to mess things up."
I think this may very well be my problem. If you have any suggestions that could help me around this without following the course I outlined above (which I don't want to do simply because it invovles waiting for the mail to deliver the XP version with SP1 to begin the process) I wold appreciate it. My sense is that I pretty much have to be able to uninstall SP2 to move forward however.

You might want to look at your CDRW drivers or even firmware flash. This could be related to anti-piracy type stuff. Either SP2 or RTW might be triggering off something they see with the burner. This has happened before, but I don't recall the message that you are getting.
As was suggested, reducing firewall and security settings might do the trick. I suggest disconnect from the internet and cutting them back to min, then installing. Then re-enable and reconnect to the net.
Kraellin also found a way to delete all RTW related registry entries to cure a problem with installing the patch. There might be something helpful there. I can't point you to the thread though. It was a couple of months back in the Apothecary. Man I miss the search function...the current lack of search is like having no long term memory.

Hi Pindar
Just read your post about the SP2 being related to your problem.
It may not be relevant to your PC but I have had to do a reformatt and reinstall of my OS due to other problems.
I have Windows XP SP1 with SP2 installed on my PC.
I have twice installed RTW after installing SP2 and have had no trouble installing the game.
So you may find that what you are thinking of doing may not cure your problem.
Wish I could help further.
Jochi
Thank you Gentlemen for your assistance. I was able to install SP1 over the dreaded SP2 and now have RTW awaiting me. Thanks again for your help and ideas.

Very glad you got it working. You should still be able to install the security updates without doing the full SP2. SP2 is really just a bundle from what I understand.
