View Full Version : Flaming ammo
Does anyone use flaming ammunition on a regular basis? Flaming arrows supposedly have bonus to attack and a penalty on an enemy's morale, but normal arrows are much more accurate and fire faster, to boot.
Similarly, flaming onager shots are much more devastating (at least on units; I dunno if they have a bigger effect on walls/towers) but they are way more inaccurate...
I never use them except when aiming at enemy's rams or siege towers.
Not only it takes a long time to reload but it also slows down my pc a lot...
If I remember well, RedHarvest started a thread about this not long ago, just have a look.
Flamin ammo in the game is bugged. SLows the PC so much I hate it when the AI starts using them. I didnt think the demo have this problem.. sigh

They fit in the "fantasy" class to me, like wardogs, druids, screeching women, and head hurlers. I restrict their use to historically appropriate purposes. The AI uses them to make units rout when the AI spots a unit with low morale. Flaming arrows work in weather that should prevent them from functioning.
My first experience with onagers was the first flaming round fired kill two of my elephants at max range. I put them in the fantasy category with that shot.
As mentioned for many of us flaming arrows can cause lingering game slowdowns. I would like to disable the flaming arrow "special ability" but haven't found a switch to do so.
Hmm. wat if u change the special abilities of the units? I mean HA's dont have flaming cos they have cantarbian circle. If u can somehow get rid of that special ability for normal foot archers....

It sure was in the demo.

It is very likely hard-codded, therefore you cannot do anything to change these abilities.

I wish they could increase the accuraay of the onager when firing flamming pots. I can understand that its harder to aim when firing a flamming arrow, but I dont think there would be any harder firng a flamming pot when using a catapult. Presently onagers are horribly inaccurate. It more effective to use plain stones because then the onager is actually hitting something.
I know that increasing the accurasy on onegars when firing flaming ammunition might overpower them, but then I thing Flamming amuntion shouldnt be inclueded for onagers. I see no reason to able flamming pots when its nearly impossible to hit anything with it.
And by the way, It should be absoulutly impossible for an onager to fire a flaming pot into the middle of a spatan hoplite unit standing 20 meters in front of it, when its acutally aiming for a unit 250 meters away!!!!!! :furious3: :furious3: :furious3:

I would only use them to scare off elephants...if that even works at all. Otherwise, it's just not as effective as regular ammo.
Flaming onagers look darn cool though.
How are these flaming arrows actually supposed to work, anyway? You only have one ammo 'pot', so I'm guessing that flaming arrows and normal arrows must be the same (until one gets set on fire...)
Doesn't seem right to me - surely you'd a) need a special arrow and b) did archers carry zippos in those days? Cos they all seem to be able to make fire on demand pretty bloody quickly...

Can anyone link to a fix that corrects the slow down with flaming arrows? I won't use them simply because of it and battles on my computer where the AI is using them are unbearable. I searched for it and had no luck.

The arrows would be wrapped in some kind of oil-soaked cloth or something, I think, but the puzzler is how you'd light them with no fire. If you're standing with a prelit torch planted nearby, fine, but it's rather unlikely that you'd have any kind of fire with you when you're running all over the map. Zippos sound like a good explanation to me.
What I wonder about is the history of flaming arrows. Were they ever widely used? If so, for what purpose? I can't imagine that they'd have caused vastly more damage to enemy soldiers than ordinary arrows, and surely siege weapons could be protected against fire without too much trouble. Scaring animals would work, of course, but it seems like it wouldn't be worth the effort.

Exactly - and a normal arrow with an oil soaked cloth wrapped round it wouldn't set a man on fire, surely? Maybe make him smoulder a bit, but disappear in a cloud of human torchness?
Arrows firing milk bottles full of petrol? Now you're talking. Should be a British special unit - Barbarian Hooligans (Chelsea Headhunters would do).
