View Full Version : Creative Assembly Pre-Battle Speech

I have gotten to the point that I no longer listen to the pre-battle speech. Last night however the speech started to run while I was setting up my Ibook to record some TV. This speech was like none other I've heard.

Somehow one of my new family members is crazy. HIs name is Amulius the Mad, really...that's what it says on his scroll. Instead of letting him stay in a city to ruin it, I used him as my conquering general. One of his speeches included the following:

"and for tonights entertainment, Gaul. If you kill them there is enough wine in camp to float a boat, and the womenfolk will be...uh...appreciative."

"...every man who lives through this battle will be my sister..."

I heard this speech twice from him last night. I don't know if there is anyway to record this. By the way, after destroying Gaul, Spain, Brittania, and Germany Amulius the mad is undefeated. He never loses and his men never rout. I have seen hastati fight down to one or two before turning.

It sounds like your general is both an alcoholic and insane. ~;) It's nice how the speeches reflect their personality.

Many cool speeches, but my favourite is from a Rome:TW Presentation Video. A Julii army VS a Seleucid one. The Julii general said: "Seleucids? PAH, I wipe better from the soles of my boots"

I've heard the "appreciative camp followers" speech many times, especially with Carthage.

My favourite one is still the blood bathing one. Im not sure quite sure how it goes but its something like this: "I want to see blood, I want to bath in their blood, I want to bath in their blood for a week!"

Also what was the trait that gave your speech, Glycerus I really want to hear those insane speeches.

Anyone know how to take a peek at the speeches? I've searched but could only find intro videos. Since I've heard enedless speeches I just want to hear the ones I've never heard

You can find the text in:
.../Rome - Total War/Data/prebattle_speeches_subtitles.txt

Favorite one I've ever heard was before the final assault in a long campaign:

"Hello. Today we are gathered here to do battle. Regretable, isn't it, but sometimes, you know, life is like that. You have to do something that you don't want to do, just because someone is telling you to do it. I didn't want to be here myself, but then my mother told me that I'd better make a reasonable show of it all, so here we go then... "

My favorite one I found in the file, and am hoping to hear someday:

"Well ride me sideways and whip me with a winkle fork, lads! There's a lot of the bastards, aren't there? Those arseweasels are here to get away from their unfulfilled, shrill wives. Hardly surprising, as they all have tiny little manhoods! Smaller than a flea on a cockroach's bum!" :shocked2:

LOL, I cannot wait to see how it was translated to Polish (I'm playing localized ver). Very good one ~D

Funny topic, indeed ~;) Now I started playing as Carthage and I like that crazy-carthaginian-arabic accent. Especially: nooooouuuww advaaaaaance, also I'm sure happy I don't hear that scoby-do after the battle "the dayyyyyy is ouuuuuuuuurrs". Cheers, mates ~:) How to unlock other crazy speeches?

I got ripped off. Mine does'nt have the speeches in text. When did you buy your copy? I got mine on release day. I tried unzipping the sounds on the cd but the only thing I get is a compiled log. You would'nt mind emailing me that text so I can read them would you.

This is all I see in that log.

A Compilation of my favorite speeches.

{Roman_Intro_05_1}
My brave men! Victory shall be ours, by grace of my inspired leadership. But this means I cannot risk myself in the front line. I must remain safe, guarded by you, my loyal warriors! This is not cowardice, oh no. It is prudence, the handmaiden of victory!

{Roman_Intro_11_1}
I am known as something of a philosopher. Some ask me, 'Why are we here?' The answer is often complicated... but today we are here to kill all those bastards.

{Roman_Extro_05_2}
And take heart men! For we have sharper pointy things than them. Oh yes, much sharper…

{Roman_Extro_05_3}
And any man who comes through this fight mostly unharmed will be my sister! It'll be free frocks and jollies for ever, you'll see!

{Roman_Extro_06_4}
Er, where was I? Oh yes. Attack the elephants, men! Go for those pink trunky beggars! There was... something else…

{Roman_Extro_06_6}
Er, where was I? Oh yes. Attack the men, my elephants! Go for those little pink sods! Err, was there something… pass the wine, there's a good chap!

{Roman_Extro_07_2}
But beware! Beware! The enemy will be merciless, because I ate all their bees! They have not tasted honey for many a moon, and this has made them mad for revenge! To arms, my pretties, to arms!

{Roman_Extro_07_3}
And remember, they may have the Moon People on their side, but we have lovely hats. Those hats will shield us from their fearsome gaze!

{Roman_Comments_05_1}
Now some of you may think that defence isn't quite my strongest skill. Well, be that as it may, you have only to stand here, die and stop the enemy. That is good defence. That is what I expect!

Glad you're all enjoying the speeches.

The "arseweasels and winkle fork" speech sound file was dropped from the original release at the insistence of the censors and certificators. Apart from anything else, a few people in the system weren't entirely sure what a winkle fork was, and felt that it might be exceptionally, exceptionally rude. I think they were a little disappointed to find out that it's a fork, used for eating winkles. ~:) It may - and I stress the *may* - reappear in the patched version.

As you may have realised, this speech was supposed to be added to the mix when a general was "earthy and direct" in his choice of adjectives, adverbs and nouns - OK, when he swore like a trooper. The original version of the speech was unusable and completely filthy.

Captain Fishpants,

Any chance of more interesting speeches for non-Roman factions? I've found most of the barbarian speeches to be short and the same. I would think the barbarian speeches would be fertile ground for earthy comments (hey, a pun)...and perhaps some self deprecating ones related to their cultures.

i tried a campaign as parthia 2 days later i shut down the game in disgust i hte them, k but the real story hear is my favorite little crazy guy yasiv somethin well anyway i had no clue how to fight well with these guys so one day i march yasiv ....... out with a full stack into selucid land to take some land for two turns he walked and when he stoped on the second turn a full stack of selucids attack me i fight lose half the stack and the battle retreat i am attacked again same turn fight and lose sent back into the city again.next turn i givehimcommand of another large army by now his traits are something like "Quick to temper", "mad", "seless assesor" "weakling" "coward" so after i send him out loses three consecutive battles on auto battle cause i got sick of his little girl screams. but on the forth battle i fought against selucia his speach was something like

"run away they come to kill us drop your sword and spur your horse my friends my underlings shall die for there great leader"

honest to god that sissy bastart said this and when the battle started he routed after one [B][I][U]SUCCESFUL charge :dizzy2:

Most of the times i think the speechs sounds lame, and weak.

If im a barbarian as i usually play, I want my General to scream about eating the hearts of the enemy or build a wall of severed heads... but thats just me :bow:

Ooops. My fault there.

I should have pointed out that the close proximity of the words "arse" and "weasel" were seen as being particularly appalling too, and hardly worthy of any further comment by Powers That Be. Although some of the original rude word + animal combos were much naughtier, and caused conniptions! :devilish:

I don't understand!! Why don't I get any of these speeches when I play? I usually just get the same ones over and over again. And they are onyl 3 or 4. Also where can I hear these speaches? Where is the file that has them(not in text, in sound)?

unusual speeches come from unusual generals. If all our generals are the standard "battle winner" style then you will hear the same speech over and over. Use generals with different traits to hear different speeches.

The speeches are contained in the file "Rome - Total War\data\sounds\voice3.dat"
But, the file is packed with lots of different sounds, and can't be navigated with standard audio software. The file voice3.idx has an index into the file you can read with a hex editor. If I get bored this weekend, mabye I'll write a quick program to unpack all the voice data..... On the other hand, I seem to recall someone writing a similar program for MTW. If there's a MTW one, it could possibly work with RTW as well.

I already went kinda half-way there Bartman..

I tried manually unpacking one of the MP3 files (the pre-battle speaches are in the format) with my handy-dandy all-purpose programming editor. I believe they are using the variable bit rate capabilities of mp3 format which my mp3 player doesn't support. :( If you find out more, post here to let me know.

I also know details of the format in the idx file if you need a kick-start (its fairly obvious though it took me about 10 minutes to figure it out..)

Already figured it out.

I unpacked an MP3, and got it to play fine in Windows Media Player 10 under XP.

I'm not exactly bored this weekend, considering I haven't started my Christmas shopping, but I guess I'll crank something out. Who/where should I upload it to when I'm done?

BTW, it'll be command line, 'cause most of us embedded systems guys don't do Windows. :)

This would be a bit more involved than just unpacking the stuff, but there are 2 options:

1) It appears that the packing system was designed so that the files could be used directly by the software in an unpacked format. (Probably for development.) If you unpack all the sounds, you might be able to change the sounds without having to repack everything.....

2) If that doesn't work, then I'll see about writing something to pack it all back up again, but no promises. :)

I understand the layout of the idx files and the structures involved... but the .dat files must be using a compression scheme or something like that.. I've tried just extracting the data directly w/ a progamming editor and it doesn't play correctly in Win Media Player 10. I must be missing something.

What did you do to extract the files? (I just hand created a named file and copied the data to it, which is obviously not enough).

Is it possibly in zip format or something like that (now my natural curiousity as a programmer is involved.. always a very dangerous thing..)

EDIT: never-mind.. my editor was inserting 0x0D/0x0A's into the stream that I wasn't seeing with casual inspection. I've gotten a small program working that extracts an MP3 and it plays just fine.

Ok so what program do use to unpack the mp3?

I've actually written one (I'm a programmer, 21 years, started in firmware assembly programming when I was in my early 20s).

Its a small program that has a lot of hard-coded stuff right now so it just reads one mp3 file out of the voice3.dat file (based on info in the voice3.idx file). The mp3's are actually stored in the .dat files without any compression at all.. the .idx files contain the names, offsets into the dat files, and the size of each sound snippet (some of which are .wav, others are .mp3).

I intend to publish a full explanation once I've got stuff totally working so that the modders can understand the formats.

Prebattle speeches--- one of the best features of RTW IMO, I wonder who thought these up, maybe CA could run a contest for a few winning speeches to be included in the patch, the prize being included in the credits file... would do wonders for ca/player relations..

Here's my entry..err this ones after the victory a post-battle speech courtesy of P. Bush
