So far in my pitifuly small Rome TotalWar hall of fame i have completed a short campaign as all of the Romans (it was the easiest thing i have done) as well as one for the selucids and a long campaign as the Brutii.

But now i find myself stuck, because i don't know who to play as next. I have tried a long campaign as the scipii (but i always run out of money for some reason ~ ) and the julii (half my provinces are on low taxes and i have five town watch and temples to jupiter in everyone of them :furious3: ) but they both failed. :sad2:

If anyone has a suggestion or tip please tell me and help me on the road to greatness or something similar. :help:

if you want money be the egyptians or the greek cities. Or be anyone close enough to Rhodes to take it in the first 20 turns or so. (gotta love that collosus). Most of your money should be coming from trade rather than taxes, and if you do find yourself going under just find a big city, take it and kill all the people: that can make you a fortune.

For more of a challenge, try the numidians or scythians. Difficult to begin with due to small income, but you will soon get going.

In my experience trades always consists of only ~30% of my income, the majority still comes from tax. ~ I am not sure what I did differently (?).

The barbarian region is always a big pain to maintain order. There are so many rebels popping up here and there, so you either need a few extra mid. sized army, or be ready to throw away a few thousands every turn to bribe them. You probably want to go for the rich regions before you step into the barbarian lands.

The best way to be rich is not to play a rich faction - but to reduce your army upkeep. You don't need so many troops. Settlement upkeeps max. out at 80% public order. For every 1000 men you need roughly one unit of peasants (much more cost effective than town watch) - that's it.

Everyone knows that the eggys and greeks hav money falling from the sky, but if you want to play a civ that isn't ridiculously rich, but isn't poor either, then play as an eastern civ which can build camel trains. Pontus would be the best one, as there are plenty of rebel provinces about to attack straight away. And on the subject of income, on my greek game, i receive about 50%+ of my income from trade.

Try the Armenians! They have great horse archers and can easily expand to take the Hanging gardens of Babylon and Rhodes. Just take out the Pontics first and then start working your way thru your other neighbors. Just don't wait too long to start whipping on the Eggys or they will get too big and strong to deal with. :charge:

If you need money, take over all of Macedonian and Greek Cities territory. And don't automanage to much because the AI always will have takes on low. Oh and the AI policy, don't let it all be Spend.

That is what i did in my long Brutii game but in every other Roman game i have played i have still had about half of the Greek and macedonian territories and i still only have 5000 denarii!!! which makes it very hard to build up carthage

Thanks for all of the suggestions, they are very helpful

GAH!

Vanya sez...

Ignore rebels! They are a FREE barricade between you and any invader foolish enough to venture into your lands. Even if enemy were to sneak up on you and kill the rebels it buys you a turn to get your act together AND you get THEM to kill the rebels for YOUZ! It's like having your pie and eating it too!

~

Vanya addz...

Go Gaul. Strip down to a loincloth when playing RTW. If you have no animal skins to dress in, use a hand-towel or a dirty/sweaty bandana. Then, paint yourself blue. Not solid blue as that would make youz look like Blue Man Group. Do streaks... Imitate Braveheart if youz cannot visualize. This be "woad"... er, "woh!"... kinda like "woh, dude! that woad is gnarly, man!" Once youz are dressed to kill to please youz and painted up (note: do not use wife's mascara as woad, or youz might find yourself ambushed by steppe headhunting vixen! Vanya already lost 3 surrogate heads this way!)

When going Gaul, make sure you attack with gall. Make Romans protest the gall of your Gauls. Don't bother teching up. Just build hordes of crap infantry and steamroll over all civilized bastids!

"Civilized man is easy to conquer."
-- Vanya

And make sure you scream your noggin off when youz charge. The more YOUZ scream, the more your men on screen will be inspired by your verbal leadership! And youz will also show your steppe headhunting vixen in the other room (or "beneath the keyboard polishing with joy", which is where Vanya prefers she be when He be harvesting noggins) whose her daddy.

:charge:

Go forth, yound lad, and plunge forward in your loincloth and your woad, and give the Emperor a fine Gaulish extreme makeover!

I didn't think the Armenians were playable...
I was playing as the seleucids and they pissed me off by attacking with their faction leader alone repeatedly, he'd siege my town then the next turn run away and do it again. I wiped out their two provinces and it said they were gone but I couldn't do a campaign with them...

The Armenians aren't normally playable but you can mod them to be. Don't ask me how as my responce would be to hard to understand but i'm sure someone else knows

Extract from the Beginner's Guide to RTW, (it explains it fine, so why should i work :) )

1) Find the file "descr_strat" in ...\Rome - Total War\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign.txt
2)Open it up
3)cut the faction you want to play as from the section its under (either unlockable or nonplayable, and copy it into the playable section, that should do it.
