View Full Version : Wierd map editing problem

I decided to try re-making my map from scratch as I have given up on trying to find the error in it.

I started by downloading DJs template map. (Thx for that). All I have done is edit two files, regions and heights.

I basically changed the shape of the big green province to the shape of the mainland in the Wheel of Time, and did the same in map_heights.tga.

I ran the game, and got an error saying the settlement Rome was in an invalid position.

I thought this was odd, there was nothing to invalidate its position, but just to see what happened, I moved it (and its army) onto the mainland and ran the game again. This time it said another province (the british one, can't remember its name) was invalid.

I moved all the provinces around, and found that there were certain areas I couldn't put the cities in. Eventually, after much tweaking the game finally loaded.

I then discovered what the problem was, the map_heights.tga isn't loading, and instead the game loads the heights from the base folder. Thats why the cities were in invalid positions.

Its a mess, with province borders going across the sea, and bits of land which don't belong to any province. I'm surprised it loaded at all.

So I went back to the map_heights, and after some editing, I found that if I edited it at all, it failed to load, even just changing a pixel.

I thought that it must be because I (or maybe PSP 8) was saving the file wrong, so I saved it as a bmp and then loaded it in Infranview, saved it as a tga again, but it still loads the one from base.

I have edited the heights file before and it loaded fine, what the hell is going on????????

Anyone had this before, is there a solution or am I just cursed?

Similar though not the same problem.

I'm editing the Rome Map adding and moving provinces around and it generally works fine except when I try moving the Siwa (Libya) province to the European continent. The game doesn't load up but doesn't give any error message. So I cut and pasted the original area from the original map and the game ran fine again.

Weird... maybe there are some areas that just don't want to be moved...

dclare, I found alot of crashes caused by moving certain areas turned out to be army positions. If you check there are any rebels in the province or armys in the city it might be that. just move the army position in descr_strat to fix.

Hi Hoggy (aka. the modding king)

so the army has to be moved along with the territory? I noticed that sometimes the game loads fine but when you hit the END TURN button and when it gets to the 'rebel' faction it CTD. So that's the reason, the army needs to be moved as well? will it help if I just remove the army entirely (I won't be keeping most of the armies anyways)? I'm really hurting for territories.

many thanks,
Clare

Not the same problem really, the game doesn't CTD, it just loads the wrong map_heights file.

I'm really getting down about this. Whatever I do, I cannot make a campmap work. Even if I only edit one pixel of DJs map, it loads badly.

Please someone help me out.

I don't know what that is Myrddraal, have you tried renaming the one in base as a test so the game can't find it? Your new map_heights.tga is named correctly? have you deleted the height.txt... er clutching at straws. So the game is loading but showing the map_heights.tga from base, but then when you edit a pixel from DJs in your campaign folder it goes wrong? In what way does it load badly?

No, I downloaded DJs map, that runs fine with edited heights.

But as soon as I edit a single pixel, it loads the one from the base directory instead.

Another thing, I tried replacing the map_heights in the base directory, but the game CTD. It must be a problem with the file, but what?? I've tried saving it with two different programs. Maybe if I could send the file as a bmp to someone, they save it as a tga and send it back. If that works, then I know there's something wrong with my system.

Did you try to load the campaign map in the editor by MrHide?
Perhaps you could confirm whether the map_heights has some error or the reason is different.
