After reading about the trick to make units larger than they are supposed to be, I decided to try how many soldiers I was able to press into one unit. i started a gaul campaign on huge, and gathered all the units i could and attacked the romans. In the battle I made all my units watch while on warband unit was massacered. When the unit reached 30 men, i attacked with my other units and trashed the romans with the rest of my army.after the battle I set the unit to retrain and then merged wit another full man unit ( the warband has 240 soldiers on huge).

Next turn I got a 450 men warband!!!!! ~ ~
Unfortunaly the game crashes everytime I try to use them, but fun anyway ~D

How many men is it possible in one unit before the game crashes???

And by the way, I have noticed that when reduced to a certain number, units automatically merge with other units. does anyone know how few men a unit must have to be automerged? Is it possible to turn this function off?

There not being automerged from my knowledge. It is part of the withdraw feature/bug. I've noticed they are'nt being merged but get wiped off the face of the earth.

I assaulted a town with 8 or so fully manned units of princepes along with some other units. This was after the marian reforms so no retraining them. The extra unit was a unit of princepes with less than 20 men in it, this is on huge settings. After the assault the Princepes were nowhere to be found and all they did was sit outside the walls doing nothing, because 15 princepes is a bit worthless. They were tagging along to be merged in with the other princepes since they can't be retrained.

It's the auto disband feature that is kicking in here And works on assaults. Also I've noticed routing units if they get off the map before the battle is over even if you won you may not find them in your stack. One time I withdrew a full unit of archers in an assault so I could get melee renforcments. After the battle was won the archers dissapeared from the stack.

As far as the max goes without it crashing the game I'm guessing 300 would be the magic number.

In a post long long ago a developer came by and said that the max unit size would be 300. So I'm guessing they were shooting for a 300 mark but cut it off at 240. It might be 305 to have some leeway for captians and flagbearers. You might get the exact answer if you ask in the modding forums.

I think I saw a dev mention 256 being the max.
