He was the god of war.
People sacrificed things to him to make the battles turn in their favour.Commonly creatures like Chickens and cows. It's called Shintoism.

Hachiman is the name of the Japanese God of War, and he is one of the gods belonging to the ancient religion of Shinto which started around 500 BC, The name Shinto comes from the Chinese word Shin Tao which means The Way of the Gods. Shinto is mainly nature oriented which means they highly respect everything in nature therefore there are no such things as animal sacrifices for animals are believed to be messengers of god. Their most important ritual is called Niinamesai in which an offering of the fruits from each years harvest are offered at the shrines. There are four branches of Shinto The Koshitsu the Shinto of the Imperial House, The Jinja which is the largest of the four,The Kyoha, and the Minzoku this last one is catagorized more as country or folk Shinto.

Mithrandir with all due respect thats not exactly what u said, there are no animal sacrifices in Shinto as u mentioned, like i said before, they revere nature and animals are thought to be the messengers of god and that includes chickens and cows. the reason i posted is because i belive Tienyi was looking for a bit more information on the god of war, and the religion he comes from even though, i didnt give him the full details of everything, for it would have taken too long i figured it was enough to get him started. I'll be glad to share that info with u if your interested at a later date. In either case its nice to see people helping each other out.
