View Full Version : Problems with servicepack2 winXP
Had been playing the game for about a month with one or two, maximum three CTDs. Then i installed SP2 the other night and the game started CTD awfully regularly, removed SP2 and reinstalled the game, and now everything is good again.
Anyone else had this problem?, and found a solution to make the game run smoothly with SP2. plz tell because i'd like to have both SP2 and rome.
I had this problem with mtw and hw2.
You must update your graphics card drivers; sp2 does not run properly with old versions of the drivers.
If it doesn't work with SP2 try saving everything you want to keep, and reformat the drive. Install XP, then update XP to include everything, then start installing drivers, then programs. SP2 is as picky as most of the Windows OS.
The short version of this is uninstall the game, install SP2, install drivers, install game. But this may not work as well (even though it is much quicker and safer for your other data).

I haven't been able to play RTW yet. I have been working with some of the minds here and on the .net site to figure out the solution. Yesterday, a fellow on the .net site mentioned he had the exact same issues as I namely: the game would install up to the "Publishing Product Information" and then crash. He found that the problem related to SP2. He uninstalled his SP2, installed the game and then reinstalled SP2. This seemed to work for him. My computer is only a couple weeks old. It came with SP2 already part of the operating system. I am unable to unistall it. I was thinking of contacting the computer store (which, in my case, is in another state from myself) and have them send me a copy of XP with SP1 and then attempting something similar to what I just described. If you have any other suggestions I would appreciate it. I am fairly ignorant of computers: I typically only know enough to mess things up.

Hi Sapi & Yussuf
I updated my graphics drivers to the ..latest..Nvidia 66.93
At first it worked ok, then for some reason I kept getting random reboots. note..not CDT's. PC would go to..black screen and then reboot.
Error message put the problem down to graphics drivers.
I have now downloaded and installed the old driver..Nvidia 53.03..and for the last three days I have had no problems. (fingers crossed heh)
My card is Nvidia Geforce FX 5200.
Check out the Apothecary, there are many posts there with advice.

hmm, i've got the same card and no problems with the latest drivers. It's dark magic, i tell you!
Having been forced to reformat my hard drive and rebuild one of my PC's after downloading SP2 I have banned this upgrade frmo my network and told the auto update feature to stop pestering me about it.
SP2 is not going to find its way onto my network until I am sure MS have finished testing it and ironed out all these incompatibility problems.
I got a copy of XP with SP1 on it and installed it over SP2 (my system came with SP2 already part of things). This allowed RTW to be installed. Bloody SP2! Thanks for the help Gentlemen! I appreciate it. ~:)

I'll join you for Snow Cones in Hades when that happens! MS is really, really sloppy. I suspect that if they wrote uninstallers for their major packs, then the install would work better. Alas, many, many MS patches and packs are uniderectional. If they can't write proper uninstaller utilities...then 9 out of 10 times it means they don't have a good handle on the install either.
