View Full Version : Migration to another part of Europe...
Some guy on another RTW forum turned up with a neat idea. Playing Scythians, he decided that the original steppes are too poor for him. So he built 2 full stack armies and some boats. Then he moved all the stuff across the sea, landed on Sicilia and within the next couple of years he conquered all peninsula ~:)
Maybe not very according to the historical truth (the original Roam of People takes place in 4th century A.D.) but still funny ~
Yes, that is great.
I did that with the britons. I grabbed all my units and walked to italy. I captured Segesta and from then on I had to fight at least one full stack of either Juli, bruti, scipi, SPQR or gaul every turn. I couldn`t reinforce my initial army, because I had absolutely no money. The region around arretium was littered with heroic victory sings.
I was hanging by athread ar more than one occasion, but it was the most intense game I had so far.
Btw, when I had like 8 Provinces, and gaul was completely untouched I got the message that egypt was about to win the game. However, they seemed to be unable to reach the goal within the next 50 turns, so I still won.
My first attempt in that direction was to relocate spain to italy, but that didn`t work at all. Spains starting troops are no match for roman infantery.
In my next game, I will try to relocate either carthage or spain to egypt.

I have just done the unthinkable: I have relocated the seleucid empire to....*drum roll*...Ireland!!! The land of the leprechauns!! My entire faction had to spend 15 years on a boat though, sailing to ireland.
ok, listen here:
Take a faction that needs to get high on its tech tho to get real great units (seluids, carthage, macedonia, etc.) units, and sail it to rodhes!
build up, capture crete after a while and build up 'til you got great armys and then, storm
greece and rome with your amazing armys! get greece fast as your armys are supposed to be so big that you cant support them more then like, mmmmm, lets say 5 turns.

One problem with that: Where do you get the money for this ambitious little scheme?

Let alone population when you've only got Rhodes and Crete as bases of operations.
I think the best migration faction are the Germans and you can do it right from the start, just collecting all your starting troops into a stack and marching on Mediolanium and setting up shop in Northern Italy.
I found the Jullii transferring to Egypt fun aswell though that took more preparation time before the big move.

Reminds me of a MTW campaign I did, as the danes I attacked the germans and made a fairly large empire. Then the french attacked me and I had to fall back. So I scorched everything as I moved slowly east in a constant fighting withdrawal. Eventually I ended up in the north of russia. By the time I stopped the campaign I was still in north russia, and the only two other factions alive both had half the rest of the map, and were locked in an epic war against each other. It was like I was a spectator for a world war, kind of crazy.
So yeah, that was a strange campaign. Guess I should try relocating in rtw also ~

By playing barbarians the way barbarians are supposed to be. Frequent pillaging/looting expeditions to the rich provinces of Greece and Asia will come up with enough money to support a huge army for a short time.
And then, when its time to leave home and begin the great invasion west, destroy all the buildings of your provinces - some more extra cash. There's no turning back now, you must succeed!
I can't seem to get the rebel faction to make a profit. How do you do it?
I've done exactly the same thing as Mikeus Ceaser - I wanted to know what would happen if Briton started out as 'civilised' as the Hellenics, but after a few questions on the modding board, decided to just get on a ship and sail the Seleucid royal family over to Ireland.
Playing on VH campaign it's difficult trying to juggle the finances while you make the long voyage. The keys were: Don't take any military units, just family members and peasants. Keep hold of your original territories as long as possible - but don't build anything, and make sure you demolish all the buildings before you do eventually lose them. And most importantly - drop diplomats off on the way and sell those maps! When you get to Ireland, you can take Tara pretty easily with maybe a couple of mercs, then head over to Britain and sack their cities one by one, killing everyone and destroying all the buildings. Once you've done that, take London and all they'll have to take it back is a peasant army. Finally you should be making money, but it's touch and go for a while...
Now, to wait until the Romans are nice and powerful...
This thread (particularly this last post) was so interesting, I had to try it. I've had the most fun doing this of any campaign in months. Starting as Selucids on VH/VH I quickly assembled all my family members in my capital and set sail with them, two militia cav, two diplomats and a spy. It was a hairy voyage. I was quickly attacked by an Egyptian bireme, but won the battle and continued on. Just west of Crete I was hit again by the Egyptians and a group of pirate ships. I lost two of my three biremes in one turn and given the long distance I had left to go, I thought I was done for right there. Egypt sent a fleet of 7 ships after my 'escape' attempt, and they followed me all the way to Ireland!
I didn't have any problems with money like Fridge. While on my voyage, I had all of my cities set to Very High taxes to milk the most out of them and I had several diplomats wandering the lands selling my maps. By the time I reached Ireland, I had 190,000 dinarii. I did not build a single building in any city, except my capital. There I built stone walls and an archery range to ensure that I could defend it for as long as I needed. In the beginning it seemed a simple afair beating off the Egyptian hordes, however soon Armenia and Pontus joined in the war and I was constantly under siege. Liberal use of bribes on non-family member armies kept the pressure off long enough for my ship to reach Ireland. Once I had secured that territory and transferred my capital, I let all of my cities fall. There was a particularly unique moment for me when I autocalced an assault on my capital with 1700 troops in it, including all 5 family members who had been born since I left on my voyage. It was a battle that I could have won easily if played, but the lovely autocalc gave me a loss. Since it was a siege, I was treated to the death notices of all 5 family members... an interesting whitewash of my family tree. It is worth noting that when all of my territories in the Middle East were gone, all three of my enemies gave me ceasefires (still had diplomats in the area) without asking for anything in return.
When I landed in Ireland, I grabbed both available barbarian mercenaries and easily took the town. I then transported all of my army except my faction heir to Britain, bribed the northwest town and bought the northeast town off of Britain. The next turn after this, Britain attacked and it was hairy for a while with my militia hoplites facing down chosen swordsmen. However, use of the withdrawal button when not favorable and general AI tactics allowed my to eventually take Londinium. I was instantly able to produce Phalanx Pikemen, which secured my hold on Britain and is now allowing me to assemble real armies and push into Gaulic territory.
The only further advice I would have for anyone trying this is: take peasants with you. I forgot to do as Fridge suggested and I had serious population problems until taking Londinium. An injection of peasant population would have helped greatly.
I'm amazed at how you got that much money! I was playing R:TR, and so maybe they've nixed some of the Seleucid's money making power, but they also give you an extra city, Pergamum which starts off at a reasonable size. My peasants were probably costing me about 500 a turn for the whole voyage, but I was really struggling, and was in debt for a while - I was even sending my armies out and deliberatley doing really badly against crappy peasants just to reduce the number of men I was paying (the unions weren't pleased at this cost-cutting method, but they wouldn't accept the redundancy package I offered, so forced culling it was. Though as I write this, for the life of me I don't know why I didn't just disband them - do you still get the population boost?) Mind you I didn't start selling maps til I reached Europe (I was at war with everyone around me anyway...).
I started selling maps the very first turn to create a nest egg to fund the expedition, since I knew my new homeland would require a lot of work to get up and running. I was able to get several juicy regular tribute deals that really pumped me up on top of the wealthy Selucid cities (I'm not playing TR).
That said, I'm now back down to around 10,000 dinarii and have finally stabilized the hemorrhaging of my treasury. I suffered massive drain after I took Londinium by creating large numbers of Phalanx Pikemen. I've now taken over all of Gaulic France and it has only been with their already sizeable cities that I have been able to get my finances into the black for the first time since abandoning my starting position.
