View Full Version : does anybody else HATE onions?
rant on:
i really can't stand them. its mostly the texture of the things. i can't stand them in my mouth. so can anybody explain to me humanity's obsession with those things? why must they be on everything? they're on breakfast foods, usually with eggs. they're in lunch foods burgers. they're in low cuisine hot dogs, pizza; they're in high cuisine steaks. vegetarians and meat lovers all eat them.
i am by nature a very picky eater. anal retentive you might even say. but at least with other toppings like say lettuce, it comes in one piece that you can just pick off. onions are usually diced into dozens of little chunks that you have to scrape individually off. and they still leave a taste on the food you're eating. i just get tired of saying 'no onions' whenever i order something and get looked at as if i refused the NECTAR OF THE GODS.
sure there are things that a particular person doesn't like, but my main rant is i want to know why onions have to be included in everything from breakfast to dinner, from vegan to carnivore. what's next people onion-coffee? onion-candy? oh the humanity.
rant off.
Have to say I love COOKED onions but detest raw ones with a passion - all I can taste whenever raw onions are in, on or near my food is - wait for it - RAW ONIONS
I have to say that I also do not understand the obsession with limp salad on every single item of food you buy in the UK. Will someone PLEASE start making tasty sandwiches without putting those after-though little pieces of pointlessness in as well ~

I disagree cooked onions are nasty (except lightly fried) where as raw onions are lovely!!!

I can't stand onions either. I can't stand most vegetables, nevermind. The only vegetables I can tolerate are tomatoes (do they count as a fruit? ~ ), lettuce, raw carrots (never cooked), and radishes...mmmm...radishes... ~D Potatoes are good as well...forgot potatoes

Onions good! Mmmmm.
But not in everything of course. Also onions aren't best choice, if *cough* interaction is to follow the meal. Partially solved if both sides eat onions, and garlic ~D . Ergo: onions good!
The onionmania is indeed of epic proportions. It may have to do with the feminine curves that the onion posesses, it starts rather small at the top and trancends in a nice bell shape. In the end we all want to eat our females, but that is only what I have read in Freud's 'the significance of onions and our rejected homosexuality' where he links oedipoes with 'cock' au vin and it's sexual relevance towards shetland pony's from greece.

Onions are one of those rare foods that offer intense flavor in two directions: sweet and spicy. Not to mention, their flavor, when muted down by cooking tends to enhance most meat flavors (chicken, beef, lamb etc). I hated onions when I was younger, so I can sympathize, but they've grown on me and now they're one of my favorite foods.
By the way, I'm not trying to preach, you really should try to acquire at least a tolerance for them. There's something in them, and their cousin garlic, that's supposed to be great for your heart.

Indeed - onions (or even better shalots) are great for making sauces. Also baked onions make a fantastic companion for grilled meat.
Did I mention onion tart or "tarte flambee"? *drools*
I would not want to miss red onions in Greek salad either...

lmao, I think everyone else missed that masterpiece...
Onions are in everything. They are like ogres; unavoidable. *stares suspiciously out of window*

Me, I hate onions, garlic and tomatoes. ~D
That's incredibly limiting when it comes to food.
I have to admit I was slowly coerced into my dependence on cooked onions (and other things I didn't really like, such as garlic and tomatoes) by my hertitage: I am half Italian.
Could you imagine someone in an Italian family not liking onions, garlic and tomatoes ?? Truly that is akin to blasphemy ~;)
So here, completely unbidden, are my rules:
1). If it ain't Italian, don't eat it.
2). If you wouldn't drink it, don't cook with it.
3). If you can't put it on pasta, don't cook it.
4). If you disagree with me, don't bother ~D
Aaaahh, food, ain't it great ??

You must bow to the almighty onion! Fry 'em, cook 'em, eat 'em raw, it's all good!
Onions are definitely a good thing. Except peeling them. :bigcry:

It seems that certain individuals are missing out on hte delectability that is the humble onion.
I see this as a travesty when the real villian of the fast food/sandwich world is, quite obviously, mayonnaise. They put this most evil of substances on everything, breakfast baguette with sausage and bacon and...............mayo. Simply Chicken sandwich with, you guessed it, bloody mayo. This stuff is the Satan of all condiments and should be banished from the face of the earth for being pants.
Anyway, where was I, Oh aye, onions. Onions should be raw or slightly cooked but still firm if not crunchy, when they get to the brown slimy stage you'd be as well eating, well, brown slime.

Onions...I hate them when I was 11 or 12 but now I actually find them good with certain food like beef (enhance the flavor) but having them raw is a limit.
Still don’t understand why my dad like it raw...maybe I will know when I am older ~D

Onions are also good for ones stomach.
Can't imagine cooking without onions, or garlic. Was raised on them, but do recall an adversion to them early on - didn't last long tho. Aside from peas (can take them in a stew, but not as a side order) and brustlesprouts, I'll eat about anything. Fried asparagus (with onions as an option) - now there's a treat.

Onions are nice as long as they are lightly cooked and quite crisp or crunchy. It makes me sick when I eat a burger or hot dog with onions that are either raw or soggy or both. uhhhh.

More, more - must have onions, must haave!
only at the org....
i ask for some onion hate and most of what i get is onion love. fried onions, cooked onion, raw onions. favorite recipes with onions. and even suggestions that i learn to love the onion. thats like a person saying they're afraid of heights then everybody submitting pictures from airplanes and skyscrapers. in hindsight, i should have started a "i LOVE onions" thread. then i surely would have gotten more of the onion hate i wanted.

" into dozens of little chunks "
. . .
So small that they won't bother you, I mean do you REALLY taste the small...small..small pieces of onion on a pizza?
I eat onions raw, a quarter or so at a time, I love them.
I ate an onion not a slice a whole onion, then I quickly went to my wife and kissed her. She needed a drink after that don't ask me why.
I use to eat wild onions when I was young, they are the best.
Onions onions onions !!!!!!!!!! Yum yum
And the hell with the original poster .......... this is a hijacked thread about people who love onions. ~D
onions are too good to pass up.
excellent!!

Yes wild onions are very good - a nice sweet onion.
Me I like my onion anyway except for over cooked. The best is to eat them just slighly sauteed in butter - once again good old fashion hard clogging real butter - not that oil based fake stuff - and mushrooms with a dash of season salts. With any meat that is my favorite topping to place over it.
Fried asparagus (with onions as an option) - now there's a treat.
On this - I love asparagus also - especially picked from the iggartion (SP) channels in New Mexico where it often grows wild, finding the nice young tender shoots.
Then taking them to my Grandmother (when I was young) who would then lightly sautee them with onions in a pan with butter - once again the real stuff - and serve them with Quail. Now that is a meal fit to eat every day.
