He is the Messiah
No i'm not the Messiah
Only the true Messiah would deny it.
Alright then I am the Messiah.
HE IS THE MESSIAH HOORAY!!!
The Gempei war was a conflict between two major clans, the Taira and the Minamoto. It was formed by a dispute between two emperors, Go-Shirakawa and Sotoku, over who would ascend to the throne. The Taira backed
Go-Shirakawa and the Minamoto backed Sotoku.
The Minamoto lost and the Taira became the biggest power in the Imperial court though there were still a few Minamoto present. Eventually the Minamoto decided to take take revenge but were again defeated,. This time the Taira slaughtered every Minamoto they could find. A few escaped and 20 years later they decided to have another go at the Taira. This was the formal start of the Gempei war. They started off badly but eventually defeated the Taira in a battle at sea where the Taira backed emperor was killed. Minamoto Yoritiom then declared himself the first shogun.

Gempei is Tera's mod. It has 4 clans of a Shogun ilk - specialized at start- but there are no heirs for the daimyo. I played it as Taira (Shimazu) had west half of Japan and Minamoto had east half. I prepared myself for an epic struggle but killed his daimyo and immediately won, which was a bit annoying. Frantz's mod has marginally more clans but has the same heirs problem. It's a little more complicated and has a half-naked woman in it. I quite liked it but they're basically campaigns not mods- most of Frantz's 9MB download is the pics.
Unfortunately at the age of the Gempei War Shogun (of course) doesn't assign heirs, so there are none. I hope this is solved in Medieval, but since it spans 400 years it should be there.

It's sort of sad that Yoritomo (I assume the Minamoto daimyo) was even out in the forefront to get killed (I suppose nothing can be done about the AI).
In reality, after a pretty mediocre set of battles, he realized that the best chance of overall victory was to utilize the strengths of better generals, like his cousin Yoshinaka and his brothers Yosh|tsune and Noriyori, and leave the grand strategic and diplomatic scheming in his own very capable hands. Of course, their victories are what lead Yoritomo to do away with them (at least in the first two cases). Yoritomo didn't want to risk leaders on his side that may have been more popular than he. Noriyori's exile and later assassination has been attributed to a number of things from his unwillingness to hunt Yosh|tsune down (a romanticized idea most often heard in anti-Yoritomo texts) to retribution for his part in a failed assassination attempt.
The historical Genpei War is actually a very interesting period of Japanese history for me. It's been about as a modified over the centuries as the Three Kingdoms period in China has, but whether you're talking the facts or fiction, it's a period that I personally find more enjoyable than the Sengoku period.

No Fear Legend.
My old favorite "Lords of the Rising Sun" game on the Amiga was about the Gempei War.

And 'Lords of the Rising Sun' is being updated and re-released for Mac and PC next month: http://www.cinemaware.com/lordsremaster_main.asp

Hopefully it fares better than supposedly the Defender of the Crown remake has fared in Europe.
As much as I loved Lords of the Rising Sun as a youth (and it introduced me to the period), I almost wish somebody would do a newer version that incorporated more of the intrigue and individual personalities of the war. The Genpei War, especially after a millenia of being romaticized, is so rich with stories on a personal level while a grand war goes on.

Amen to that, Ii. Said it before but I'd love to see a modern game with the same concept as both 'Lords...' and Microprose's 'Sword of the Samurai' set in the 12th Century, ie a 'mixed genre' game that had strategic level, tactical battle, role-playing and First-Person combat. You could even throw in an option to include myth and magic as recorded in the Japanese chronicles - after all everyone believed in it at the time so it has a certain 'authenticity' http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Also can't understand why there are no epic Japanese movies or TV based on Genpei and Minamoto Yoshitsune. The Japanese seem more obsessed with ancient Chinese epics than their own rich historical legacy.
WOW! I had not heard about the LotRS update. I'll be looking for it. I hope there will be a demo.
