I played Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (SMAC) Game and still think it to be the best turnbased game ever. Also one of the hardest. From what I have seen of Civ3, it has included a lot of the ideas from SMAC. I am interested in how many of you have played the civ 3 games and if you still play. I would especially like to start a PBEM game. It will last forever, but would be a lot of fun for those who like such things. I have played SMAC online, using Roger Wilco, in a 3 human players vs. 3 AI players game and thought it extremely enjoyable.

Anybody interested in a long-term PBEM game? We could play vs. each other or team up vs. an equal number of AI opponents. I will need thru the holidays to practice up and learn the new interface, but the concepts in Civ3 are almost exactly what was in SMAC, just in a historical setting instead of Science Fiction. Let me know and we can begin playing.

I like PBEM games like Combat Mission and such, since my current work schedule does not allow me large chunks of time to play online. I can plan out my moves on my laptop, from work during the slow times.

Hope to see some of you soon.

I was extremely good at SMAC using the Peacekeepers and University, but I am a complete newbie at the Civ3 factions, so I will be challenged by any level of player.

I bought it too, after reading your post on the subject on .com.

You can certainly count me in.

Sounds good EF! Hopefully we can get at least one more and go 3 on 3 against the AI. Always fun to beat up on the AI; especially on one of the harder levels of difficulty.

PS: Do you have my email address? I will PM you with it if you do not. I have posted it enough over the years to think most patrons probably have it! hehe

Do pikemen still own marines? Seriously, the combat was my biggest grip with Civ3 and Play the World. Did they fix it in later expansions?

i haven't played the later ages yet, so I am not sure. I have not seen it mentioned on the forums I have visited though, so Conquests may have taken care of the problem.

IS this game worth getting for 25 quid (40 dollars) as in the complete version?

I got it yesterday, the original version, not the gold or complete edition, for 6.5€. It's very addicting, at least for the first few hours, but right now I don't have much to do...

It's hard keeping the urge to attack nearby cities down :-)

I'm afraid I don't have your email Elmarko.

The most annoying thing thats happened to me is when a medieval infantry man with a mace annihalted my tank army!

And that was on the lowest difficulty!

Marines OWN by the way, they are by far the most useful and best unit I have come across.

I will have to check on the Mace/Tank thing to see if it is corrected in Conquests.

EF check your Private Messages.

See it this way, it isn't the opposition that does it but your own men's stupidity. It's extremely rare though unless you attack places with very high bonuses (big cities, mountains) and then it's rare.

I suspect it was done to make it harder for the attackers, I can easily conquer the entire world with ten units in SMAC. ~D

How much hit point did the tank army have left? In Conquests, the comp don't even attacks armies with high hitpoints lef, unless it's a city.
And was it normal tanks or modern, and what was the terrain?

If it's 4 or more then you had very bad luck.
Three or less, it was carelessness from your side, they shouldn't be so weak if the frontlines.

But still, even an understrength tank division should just roll over a bunch of guys with maces.

It was full health with one unit elite, admittadly they had a massive stack of macemen in reserve, but only one attacked...

It was full health with one unit elite, admittadly they had a massive stack of macemen in reserve, but only one attacked...

Was it:
a. One maceman that took all the points?
b. Or that huge stack finally killed the tanks after like 20+ attacks?

If a. Then you are extremely (extremely, extremely!!!) unlucky.
If b. Then you're unused to the new stack system in civ3 with huge armies, you'll need huge armies for yourself now.

But still, even an understrength tank division should just roll over a bunch of guys with maces.

Well, a few tanks ran out of fuel or got some parts broken. The macemen attacked the stucked tank, killled the crew and took over the cannon tower and shot a few other tanks apart. Your own incompetent crew helped by accidently shooting some of thier own tanks when they panicked.
It could happen. ~D

And besides, when we're on the realistic side, how often had the tanks vs macemen happened in history? Never. Could it happen? Yes, but only if you encountered a new continent that hadn't had any contacts with you before and then they would have stolen most of the technology in two turns (=atleast two years). The outteach in all the civs series is extreme and that the comp use outdated troops (instead of upgrading) doesn't make it better. ~;)

About Realism, it had nothing to do with Technology, on the turn the war started I bombed every single stratagic resource they had thereby foricing them to take up maces.

And it was A by the way.

I have to say i love the CIV series except for the Call to power games (#2 was slightly better than the first but was still terrible IIRC)

Havn't bought Civ3 but will do when i've completed the stack of games i've just bought for my new PC (HL2, LOTR:BFME, Pacific Assault)

LOL YOu sound like me Tuffen: I have yet to complete my way thru Far Cry, Neverwinter Nights + addons, and Pirates for the PC. Crimson Skies, The Italian Job and Burnout 3 for the XBOX. I also have several Combat Mission PBEMs ongoing as well. **SIGH** So many good games, so little time to play them! :furious3:

LOL, i know how you feel, the problem for me is the list keeps getting bigger for me. I've got NWN + 1st expansion, The Getaway black monday, Hl2, Far cry, GTA SA, LOTR:BFME, Pirates, Doom 3, Mafia and I know KOTOR2 will be out before half of these are completed.

Then I will get Civ3 as i've been meaning to for a long time

I am starting up a big PBEM Civ3 game soon. I have a couple of people interested already:

Efrem
UglyFist
Myself

If we get enough people we could do a human vs. AI game, a 3v3, a 4v4, or even a free for all game. If you are interested let me know and I will PM you with my email addy so we can begin.

I will probably set up an ezboard forum, or use the Ugli.org site to help us talk alliances, tech, trade, etc . .
