what are you on about, return of the jedi was the worst of the originals, the characters were far more unbelievable and stupid.
the best one was the empire strikes back, but then again star wars was typical ripped off rubbish.
thanks,
diz

ESB was really bad at the end, Cloud City, and then the carbonite twist...
ROTJ was great.

I must agree. That whole bit at the end when Han was frozen in the carbonite was just...yeah...
ROTJ was the best of the original three.

The last re-release in cinemas I recall was the release of the Special Edition to theaters in 1997.

Rearding which one was the best - ESB, no question. ROTJ had some strong scenes but the Ewoks, which were a terrible contrast to the dark scenes on the Death Star, spoiled the movie

Yes. The Ewoks were a horrible sign of the quality the prequels were going to have...

I mean who on earth thinks them up? Let's have everyone being serious and getting killed, then a bunch of puppets beating up some apparently elite stormtroopers with polystyrene rocks. Now, if they have just all been gunned down hopelessly, that would have been better. Make the Empire look nice and cruel.

Yeah the Ewoks were really stupid.
But the Death Star Scenes and the Tatooine Scenes were da bomb!

ESB all the way! Easily the best. Jedi was good...but stormtroopers 0 vs ewoks 1....yea ok....

the scenes with the emperor were the best in ROTJ. especiallly when he is first introduced and comes out the shuttle as this small hunchbacked old thing compared to the gigantic vader and you think why is vader subservient to that.

its a shocking scene because previously in TESB, the emperor's hologram had been 10 times the size of vader, and radiated power.

and as the movie progresses, you realize that vader is just Action but the emperor is Thought that directs and manipulates the Action. and it is sublime. i still shed a tear every time he falls down that shaft.

and then lucas brought the ewoks.

it is like 2 completely different movies scrunched together. iago from othello meets the muppets.

TESB is more consistent throughout, the empire wins in the beginiing at Hoth, and wins in the end at Bespin, luke fails against his inner demons in the swamp. threepio is ripped apart, and han is frozen, luke loses a hand but gains a evil father.

OK - I liked ROTJ mostly for the fighter scenes and lightsabers, though I don't mind ewoks as much as some people do.
The Empire Strikes Back is awesome. Even humorous at times. ~D
But I still like A New Hope because it was THE original. Classic, and the crowning film, in my opinion. Particularly the trench run.

Not really related Star Wars joke:

"How can you tell if someone is a Catholic Star Wars fan?"

"???"

"You say, 'The force be with you,' and he responds, 'And also with you.'" ~D

Of course, I'm Catholic and find that hilarious.

"How can you tell if someone is a Catholic Star Wars fan?"

Easy, when the priest says: I am your daddy.

sorry.

ROTJ is flat out the worst. Well not as bad as PM and TCW but I am denying their very existance. ROTJ sucked because of: EWOKS. God they are annoying, they just scream happy meal. And anyone that thinks that TESB is the worst should be shot. You have the battle of hoth. And did I mention that I am your father? One of the greatest scenes of all time you fools.

TESB is the best, bad guys do well in it which is always good. ROTJ would be next, yes the ewoks beating stormtroopers is a bit unrealistic, but the whole part with Jabba was great and luke vs darth 2. After that NH then AOTC and lastly PM

I love Star Wars, the original trilogy are right up there for my favourite films of all time.

A New Hope is my personal favourite. I really like Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan, the interplay between the characters, particularly Han and Luke, is great, and the Trench run is awesome. Empire is a stronger film overall than Jedi, but Jedi has some of my favourite scenes, like the Battle of Endor and the final duel between Luke and Vader.

Empire is the best Star Wars movie. it's the most serious, had the least amount of babyishness, had the most competent director too

Lucas has gone senile with the prequels. that can be seen with the titles alone. "Attack of the Clones" --- only a very, very senile man would ever name his movie that.

plus the way Darth Maul died was quite probably the most asinine death in the history of American Cinema. Darth Maul should have been a main character in all 3 prequels, with at least 45 minutes of screen-time in each one.

something else i don't get: the re-release of Star Wars a few years back was called "Special Edition" because Lucas edited them.

yet Lucas also edited the new Star Wars DVD release. but that is not called Special Edition.

so what the heck is up with that? is the Special Edition content included on the DVD release (along with new editing by Lucas in addition); or is the DVD release just the original version with some more editing?

if it is just the original version - then when the heck will the Special Edition be on DVD? and when the Special Edition comes to DVD - will Lucas add his "new" editing to that on top of the Special Edition editing?

i'd like to see one of you guys make sense out of all those questions! good luck you'll need it! LOL ~D

The DVD version is basically the "Special Edition" with some new editing by GL on top of it, e.g., Jabba has been redone in ANH, the Emperor-hologram scene in TESB has been redone (with Ian McDiarmid replacing the original woman/ape/emperor)

And we have a nice ghost image of the new anakin skywalker (The actor can't remeber his name) at the end of ROTJ

you have to admit though, that the trench run in ANH has got to be one of the biggest sexual imagery in film.

a bunch of little 'fighters' swim...err fly up a 'trench' to a round circular thingy. the fighters keep going in the trench, out the trench, in the trench, out the trench ... as the music keeps getting more and more frantic and they get closer and closer to the hole. the 'fighters' drop out one by one, until there is just one left that makes it all the way to the end. at the climax, when he get's there, luke 'lets go' of everything, shoots his 'torpedos' into the hole, there is a blinding white light, and everybody is happy afterwards.

Don't forget, Luke gives out a most suggestive sigh after he 'lets go,' something in between a gasp and a coo. It's really quite provocative.

Jabba was definitely in the Special Edition of ANH along with Boba Fett protecting him as he talked to Han

so then if this DVD is the Special Edition with further editing; then why wasn't it marketed as such? wouldn't they be selling more copies if they labelled it as Special Edition, since it has that content in it? ~

Actually Jabba has been redone again for the DVD version, as GL did not quite like the look of our favourite slug in the Special Edition

really...that's odd because i saw interviews by Lucas at the time Special Edition came out, and he seemed totally thrilled with what he did to Jabba then. saying he deliberately made Jabba not be fat because Jabba used to be a cunning gangster but by the time of ROTJ Jabba had let himself go and become an insane slob.

did Lucas now change his mind about that, make Jabba fat in ANH or is he still really slim and fit even after this second re-doing?

The look hasn't really changed, he's just tarted up the CG used to model Jabba in ANH.
