Hi,

I am seeking some information regarding the term WATER.

I am requesting any information, which tells me how to spell and pronounce it, and the sign of water (I have Japanese signs installed in my pc).

Thanks in advance.

The word is mizu pronounced me-zoo. That's all I can help you with.

And what is most correct for water, is it sui or mizu?

Thanks.. !

Mizu is Water - and Sui is like for SwimWear. For example, "kai sui pan" is swim pants.

As for On and Kun Reading:

Most kanji characters have two readings: On-reading (On-yomi) and Kun-reading (Kun-yomi). On-reading is the kanji's Chinese pronunciation and Kun-reading is native Japanese pronunciation.

Those Happy Kanjis started in China ... so that's where that on/kun comes from.

I hope someone changes their name to Mr. SwimPants. KaiSuiPan San!

To add to McKenna's excellent post, the on reading is generally used in certain compound words, and the kun by itself or in things like surnames.

So, you order "mizu" at a restaurant, but you combine "sui" with "yoobi" to make Wednesday.

Also, mountain is "yama" (kun), but you call Mount Fuji "Fuji-san" (on).

I didn't know that but good to know. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif However, I know for sure both sui and mizu were used for water in feudal times.
