This sort of question simply boils down to ones own personal taste

Wow, if I don't say so myself that would be one hell of a band. The quality solo's of Dave Murray with the heavy riffs of Erno and the unique bass play of Steve Harris and crazy drum work by Stauch... Amazing.

Gah, too many possibilities for the different styles of music. I'd get a raving headache trying to cover them all.

Tend to agree though, some bands were "the best ever" just as they were: Led Zeppelin, Queen, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Rush, The Police to name a few ... wouldn't want to change a thing about them.

***

If I could put together my own superband with me handling one set of keyboards ... hmm, let's see. A lot would depend on the style we wanted to pursue, as I like many styles, so:

Keyboards 2:
Rupert Greenall (the Fixx), or
Jim Gilmour (Saga), or
Mitchell Froom (Gamma, Crowded House, Suzanne Vega), or
Trent Reznor (NiN), or
Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yaz, Erasure)

Guitars 1:
Jeff Beck (the Yardbirds, Rod Stewart, solo), or
Neil Schon (Santana, Journey, solo), or
Stevie Stevens (Billy Idol, solo)
or Brian May (Queen, solo)

Guitars 2:
Warren Cucurullo (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, Duran Duran), or
The Edge (U2), or
Pat Travers (solo), or
Michael Schenker (UFO, MSG)

Bass:
Patrick O'Hearn (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, solo), or
Geddy Lee (Rush)

Drums:
Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa, Missing Persons, Jeff Beck), or
Tommy Aldridge (Pat Travers), or
Neil Peart (Rush)

Vocals:
none, or
Robert Plant (before his voice blew out), or
Peter Gabriel (Genesis, solo), or
Mickey Thomas (Elvin Bishop, Jefferson Starship: New Gen), or
Paul Rogers (Bad Company, The Firm, soon-to-be Queen: New Gen), or

GAH. Too damn hard to choose. Now I have a headache ... :furious3:

But these guys can't play, man! They have a raw and energetic quality to them, but individually, they suck...

I was ofcourse half joking when I said that.

Music wise themselves I fail to see the huge appeal they get, it was average at best and their drug induced solos went on too long and were boring in places.

However what they did for music generally was huge, they brought it forward and the fact that so many metal bands put them up there as their inspirations just shows their legacy, for that I salute them.

"But these guys can't play, man! They have a raw and energetic quality to them, but individually, they suck..."

AARRGGHH ~

The Jam do not suck.

Anyone who has heard any Jam song ever wouldn't say that they suck.

Paul Weller has such a great way of going off in whichever direction he wants with his guitar leaving Rick Buckler and Bruce Foxton making most of the song with there genius. I don't recall any of them being accused of taking drugs either.

Actually for the others it is very taste specific, I can fully understand why people find the Clash or Sex Pistols annoying even the Buzzcocks to a lesser extent but not the Jam

(serious 17 year old Jam fan here) ~:)

Really? I find him average. Far inferior to the man he replaced, who was a true bass playing god...

i didn´t realize this was a "bring the dead back to life" kinda thing....but yes he´s no where near the original bass player for metallica.

Guitar - Justin Broadrick
Bass - Flea or Les Claypool
Drums - Neil Peart
Keyboard/Producer - Trent Reznor
Vocals/Songwriter - Maynard James Keenan

After a couple of months hanging with this crew, Neil would probably lose his mind and have to be replaced with someone like Dave Grohl or Dave Lombardo. ~D

I find it absolutely appaling no-one has mentionned Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom) for lead guitar yet. This guy is a guitar god, dare I say it, even better than Hendrickx himself. The only reason he isn't legendary yet (besides that he's only 25 years old) is because he makes rather unconventional music IMHO.

Hi Louis
please, if you have some time to spend listen "London Calling" Lp, you'll find a lot of very good songs. IMo it's one of best LP never produced. OK it's only my opinion.
Sex pist were fun, but no more than a meteor and Paul Weller has create fine songs like "Down in a tube station" or "Town called malice".
Each tima have good and bad rockbands.
Yeah Itwould be really great to see Paul Mercury singing with Joe Strummer and Pete Towsend and Keith Richard play guitar but that's not true:-((( Shi*

Vocals - Bruce Dickenson
Lead Guitar - Jimmy Page
Rhythmn Guitar - Slash
Bass Guitar - Steve Harris
Drums - John Bonham

Slash solos make the hairs on the back of my neck tingle, and Page is the Riffmaster General. Steve Harris is IMO, the best bass guitarist ever, and Bonzo was a truly amazing drummer.

I agree, Alexi Laiho is brilliant.
