Since ND use large swords that require swinging room shouldn't their unit have a larger frontage?
Same for naginatas....
Historically, foot troops not in a square formation were soundly savaged by a cavalry charge. Why don't heavy cav simply ride the first two ranks under( those NOT armed with spears)?
Did the Japanese even use a square formation?

Cav do a good job of defeating No-Dachi and Warrior Monks (who lack spears). And flank/rear attacks from Cav do excellent damage to units armed with spears for the first few moments.

Well it may be written in the book but... warrior monks can win HC witht the same honour. It works for me all the time. And no-dashi and good against them. I only use HC, when l use it only to flank and take out archers and gunmen.

WMs and HC are about equal, as seen in the battle simulator. WMs may win slightly more often due to their increased morale (they're fanatics, after all) but any terrain/flanking/charging/fatigue bonuses are usually enough to make all the difference.

As for ND, I find it's often a matter of who charges first, as both units are intended to attack by charging rather than defend. HC tend to win more often though, unless there's a honor disparity - I'd replace those ND with YS any day.

As an additional note, I prefer YC to HC anyway - they're cheaper, faster and actually more effective vs. other cavalry.

Also....Why do the rivers never ice over in WInter? I'd love to avoid a bridge battle by choosing a good season like winter.

I've often wondered that myself, Shai. I absolutely despise bridge battles, and especially Musashi when I'm playing as Takeda. Stupid horde. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif I'd be extremely happy if I could waltz over that ice with my cav and show Lord Hojo a thing or two. I am undefeated by the AI in open-field combat! In numerically fair situations, anyway. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Actually, I'm fairly sure this question came up a few months ago. It was explained that it is extremely rare for the weather to be so cold the rivers froze over. It might be a fun idea, but it would never actually happen.

when HC and YC charge do they cause extra damage in the first few moments of HTH combat in to the enemy units? I also think that cav units shold be able to drive a bit further in to the enemy unit if they charge. Against spears though HC and YC should lose some moral if you tell them to charge. This would enforce the fact that the cav units are going to be reluctant to charge in to a wall of pointy spears
