View Full Version : Which patch version to use when playing SP WE?

While waiting for the RTW patch I thought I should try a SP game of Shogun WE. I bought it dirt cheap in the bargain bin, and I just wanted to check it out. The question is what patch version works best for SP games? Or should I play vanilla STW 1.12 instead (can buy it 'for free' from a friend).

I understand there is a 1.03 unit stats balance patch, but this one only works for MP?

Thanks

1.02 is fine for STW-WE/MI SP. I like it better than the original stat because cav are much better. Some don't like the power of guns, but I never have a problem with them (because I usually finish the game well before they come into play much).

Original STW is a classic that many people still enjoy. I think it's a bit more challenging because it takes twice as long and costs twice as much to build most things. On the other hand, I really like that WE-MI has several different campaigns that you can play: 1530, 1550, 1580 and the Mongol Invasion, in addition to the classic Sengoku Jidai. For that reason alone I'd recommend WE-MI, patched to 1.02.

1.03 was made primarily to improve WE-MI MP. Still, I think it would yield a nice SP campaign as well. Just an extra step though really.

If you get a swapper you can play whatever patch you want, changing on the fly as you like. Check the STW MP thread for a link. Remember that, if you do get the swapper, you need to install the official 1.02 beta first. Get that at the .com download site.

I didn't play MI. But, I highly recommend the original vanilla STW (patched) on the highest difficulty. :charge: Enjoy!

Drisos,

Shogun: Total War v1.0 - 1.12 do not have the following:
- Opening movie from RAN.
- Different Time Periods (Sengoku only)
- Naginata Cavalry
- Battlefield Ninja
- Kensai
- Ashigaru Crossbowmen
- Mongols
- Drill Dojo
- Bribery Missions for Emissarys
- Coastal maps
I believe the build times in v1.12 are twice those of WE/MI, for instance the Spear Dojo takes 4 seasons as opposed to WE's 2. Also the unit balancing was different, for instance the Samurai Archers are nowhere near as dangerous to footsoldiers and I seem to remember that the Ashigaru were even worse (perhaps I hadnt worked out how to use the Ashi yet).

Shogun: Total War Warlord Edition and Mongol Invasion have all the stuff listed above but have better balancing for online and offline play (I have only played v2.03). Its an easier game than v1.12 and plays out much faster due to the build times.

Overall, I prefer the opening scenes and choices in v1.12 and so wish I didnt have Kensai or Battlefield Ninja, but the balancing of the units in WE/MI v2.03
makes up for this shortfall with its faster gameplay and much improved balance.

Yeah, Warlord Edition is the equivalent of Shogun and Mongol Invasion in one pack, so you will have all the things listed above ~D

Warlord edition without the patch was a better SP game than the patched version - this is because the patch, amongst other things, reduced unit morale as this was screwing up the MP game. However, with the higher morale settings the SP game was much more challenging, as the higher morale made up for the poor computer battle AI.
