this would be awsome, even greater for fans of Star Wars jedis could be generals and the empire, sith, republic, rebellion, rebels (not the rebbelion ppl that work for ex: jabba the hutt)

dark side, light side it would be an awsome mod unfortunatley i dont know how to mod this is basicly just an idea

Yes it's a great idea. I'm a newbie in modding (that doesn't mean I don't know how-to, it means I've never participated in a Mod) but I'd really like to work on this project. But when you think of it, the first problems would already come flowing in.

Like the Campaign map. Star Wars is set in an entire galaxy, a campaign map with those planets would need an entire different engine to be build, and that costs months, if not years.

Lasers. It's hard to make laserbeams in a game like this, and it's a fact that a lasergun is the most common weapon in the Star Wars history.

Licence. Lucasarts'll be watching us like Sauron's eye over Gondor, and like Darth Vaders head over Skywalker.

But it's a great idea and I hope more people will see the potency of this MOD.

well first of all for the campaign, we could have different campaign maps for each planet so if u like click on your starport and then select the planet (new campaign map) this could take time to make the planet's campaign maps but i wont take as long as making a new campaign engine

You're right. We could make the sea the universe and the planets little Islands in it. But then, does that mean that every planet has only one province?

ShadowStriker

lightsabers could be like swords except a different base and a bright color, plus it is not turned on until u like select attack or something also ranged weapons is like arrows except they go straight and have a bright red color

and the lucasarts thing im stuck at

unless we get permission.... :help:

Yes well that solves almost everything but it's best to secretly develop the mod 'cause if you ask for permission the answer's almost a certain no.

I'll work some things out with factions, units and planets and check out the possibility of the mod.

No, you simply have to tell them that you are doing it and give them full credit for the idea. "Star Wars"

Zharakov .... I wish!!!!!

There are certain franchises which defend their rights with EXTREME ZEAL and Star Wars is one of them. I have seen many promising SW mods get canned under threat of extreme legal action. This usually involves Lucas-Arts or whoever holding each and every member of the mod team personally liable for breach of copyright, even though the mod was to be distributed free. You have no rights to use their intellectual property without express permission.

Ask..and they will say no. Continue...they sue....and they win.

Other similarly defended franchises include Lord of the Rings. There was a Morrowind mod based on this idea. It is gone. Someone asked for permission, they got the attention of the Tolkien Estate and they were shut down.

Do not even THINK about asking! If the METW team asked for permission, I guarantee you, they would be history within weeks. Mods like this only survive by keeping a relatively low profile. Once they are released, there is little that can be done to destroy them :)

Pre-release, however, they can hold the mod team liable for actually releasing ANY material once they have been given the order to cease work.

Thats why I went for a Mythology mod. You can't copyright a centaur ;)

Jedi and Wookies, though, are definitely copyright!

thats why you should move to RUSSIA! ~D

no what i meant was that there's one whole map for each planet and in order to get to those maps (planets) you could like build a starport or something then choose which planet (map) and it will load that planet (map) and save the current progress on the map (planet) he was just at.

~ unfortunately we shouldnt make this mod for illigal/legal purposes with lucas arts :embarassed:

That's no moon.

The problem with a Star Wars: Total War (besides copyright infringement) would be simulation of battlefield combat. Except for Ep I + II there were no set-piece battles between lines of troops.

Another problem - air/naval units and their participation on the battlefield.

I think the campaign map should be a single planet, thought that too would be problematic.

But legions of stormtroopers...

Just have to wait for "Empires at War," I'm afraid. But I will dedicate my sig to anyone who comes up with even a half-way decent Star Wars mod. They already have a huge challenge a head of them.

May the force be with them. ~;)

china bows to you (wait im not chinese im norwegian) that right i will be really looking forward to empire at war, I also evn tho its kind of old the other Star Wars strategy........but i cant stop thinking about it, What Happens If Lucas Arts Joins With Activision?(or Creative Assembly, i get kinda confused on who makes the TW series)

BUT i can imagine making the sea the star field and each system an island,
editing the campaign map to represent that would work,

each system could have "planets" each being a province in that system,
a little work you could have "land bridges" between planets in the same system,
thus starships replace ships and can travel "deep space" and ground forces can travel between planets but need a "ship" to carry them between stars.

I cannot imagine Lucas arts giving you much grief,
you could make a rough mockup (pics and the like) and offer to include credits in/on everything IE:- inspired by Lucas Arts "Star Wars",
and "this mod CANNOT be distributed via any method reulting in monetary reward (not even if such monetary reward merely recovers data transmission or CD/DVD manufacturing costs), hosted on ANY website (other than "xyz" and Totalwar.org) or included on any magazine/fanzine CD/DVD without the EXPRESS permission of Lucas Arts"

It is after all a freeware game "mod", as long as you make a rough mockup and ask before you do any serious work i think you will be fine.

Cheers,
B.

all I've seen on this thread so far is permission to do the mod and "wow this will be great." It does sound good but there is one flaw in the plan - is anyone actually going to be making this mod ~

I doubt it - there was a very promising mod done for Rogue Spear a long time ago that got shut down (I guess Georgie-boy thought it was a threat to his Jedi Knight series!) Some guys just can't get enough money, though you gotta understand the guy - thats the ONLY think thats making money for him!

I've been thinking about this for along time... but I have no modding experience and no Idea of how to get around the copyright infringement that I just kept my mouth shut! ~D However, if you were going to do this, I always thought that the only way would be to do it without any land battles ( I know it sounds horrible, but I dunno what else). This would solve alot of problems, but probably raise alot more... like how you would have multiple gun turrets on one ship.

For pities sake make your own :-) Like dear Hoggy, he's breaking new ground and amazing the entire world with his eastern mythology mod :-) I mean Star Wars isn't the only thing out there in space - Star Trek, Warhammer, Starship Troopers, etc etc etc etc. I'm sure you could create an even better, personal and best of all, original and non-copyright violating version of the galaxy far far away :-)

Best regards,
Clare

Making your own is probably the ONLY way you are going to be able to work around the restrictions of teh game engine anyway.

Napoleonic mods have proved that you CAN introduce firearms...but in this period, you still had a very rigid battle formation in ranks. The RTW engine assumes this sort of combat.

Missile troops can be modded to represent..oh..say..Missiles ~;) but you still have to explain why they will only fire at certain ranges, and tend to run away when melee troops approach.

None of this really fits with the general 'Star Wars' combat. Sure, you can make certain units fit, but the bulk will prove tricky.

By the time you have thought up 'reasons' for the Stormtroopers forming a square block and marching into battle, you will have stretched teh storyline and the physics of the SW universe to a serious degree. Far better to take the IDEA of a futuristic RTW mod, and build units that fit the game engine:

Allow me to throw some ideas into the ring here :)

Imagine warfare in a world that never had the Chinese with their rockets...that consequently never had Gunpowder. Missile weapons could be built relying on compressed air, which would have a reasonable range effect, but would be bulky. You can add in some interesting things for cavalry, possibly even some form of Mech type units with some missile capability. Like an AT AT ..but not an AT AT....

Melee combat would rely on close range weapons, such as Warhammer ChainSwords, High Voltage electrical weapons, and good old fashioned brute force.

Take away the high-tech beam weapons, and revert to brute force, and formations become important again. It's all a question of careful storyline work, and a bit of imagination. Start with what can be done...and work from there!

The campain map could look a little like this.(perhaps on a smaller scale)
with small islands as the planets.
www.starwarz.com/clonewarseu/timeline/images/clonewarsmap.jpg

Also some one said lasers would be difficult to do. I did this in 5 mins. The archers do fire straight instead of up above heads.

Some one said that this post was just discussing ideas which it is but i will work on the mod if i can find skinners and modelers.
