I predict the Patriots will crush Philadelphia. Hopefully that statement will jinx them because I really want Philly to win. I am sick of hearing my brother-in-law gloat about his Patriots. I can't stand to hear anymore about how great Coach Belicheck is at game planning, especially when he keeps making the right calls, the lucky s.o.b. . A pox on the Patriots. ~;)
I'm with HT on this,
Go Eagles!!

Having been born & raised in Southeastern CT, all I can say is.... we're gonna squash the Eagles like bugs!
Although, I'm worried... if the success of the Pat over the past few years was supposed to take the sting of the Red Sox off (God was consoling us), does that mean we're in for a Super Flop?
In all seriousness, while I always pull for the Pats, I would not have minded losing to Cowher last night and I wouldn't mind losing to Andy Reid in two weeks. I'd rather not, but if you gotta lose, better to a class act like them. I would have blown a gasket if we had lost to the Colts though... I want to smack that smug look off of each of the Mannings every time I see them...
I won't play in San Diego, I'm too good to play for such a sucky team... bleah!

I just wish the Packers could be in it...
:bigcry:
I'm afraid the Patriots will waste 'em, but I don't care too much either way. Maybe whoever wins will become obscure and let Favre take us to the Super Bowl next year... winning the 40th would be very nice indeed.
Patriots all the way (though I can care less about professional sports as I am more a college football watcher).
(Go Pack Go btw)

Sadly I think the Pats got it. Evil New Englanders why did you have to beat my team The Colts.

Har har har!!! We own Peyton Manning. This is my impersonation of him last week after the first time we dropped his candy butt on the frozen ground... :surrender:
Next up, Big Ben got his clock cleaned....:smash:
Now, for the Eagles, it's all over but the cryin... ~:mecry:
Do Donovan & Westbrook & the boys stand a chance? Will Terrell make it back in time to save the day????

Jag, if you told me you were hatched from an egg right now, I wouldn't be this stunned.... I thought it was a matter of national pride that folks in the UK not only don't watch, they don't know a thing about American Football. By the way, your intelligence on the matter is boundless. ~D

Don: you are absolutely right, the Football* league enforcers are on their way to JAG's place and normal service will be resumed shortly.
(*this means association football obviously)
So, just to join in, is the superbowl the end of a knock out cup competition or is it the end of an all-plays all league thing? And there are two leagues aren't there, one serious and one not so good? this is the serious one, right?
Anyway, get the beers in.
Don Corleone
01-25-2005, 13:10
Yes, this is the end of a long knock out competition. If you want the gory details on how we got to where we are, and how the league is organized, let me know, I'd be happy to share.
There are a bunch of minor leagues, like Arena Football, but this is the BIG LEAGUE, the National Football League. Funny, I thought you were making a crack about the Eagles playing in the 'not so good' conference, which would have been funny AND accurate. :)

By the way, is there a tutorial site for Americans on your version of football? I've watched it quite a few times, and while I can follow what's going on in any game no problem (and find it rather exciting) I can't for the life of me figure out how your leagues are organized. It seems like you have a championship every three weeks... :dizzy2:

I dont really understand American 'football' but i did see the number 7 for the team that lost to philadelphia get absolutly flattend by some fat guy after a nice little jink past a couple of players. dont think he saw him coming!!! that made me laugh!!!
PS I voted for *whine squeak* protective equipment as although there were some big hits going in, its no where near as nasty as some of the things that go on at the bottom of a ruck in rugby and you still see some equally big hits without the 'armour'

Its not too complicated.
There are basically four professional leagues arranged in a ladder: Premiership, Championship, first and second. (These used to be called Divisions one two three and four which was a lot better if you ask me. At this rate the Conference (the one below the second division) will be called the Intergalactic Champions Superleague in a few seasons).
All the teams in each league play each other twice, once home and once away, in a season lasting from about August to May. So there are 46 fixtures in each division except the Premiership where there are 38. At the end of each season the top three clibs go up to the next league and the bottom three go down a league. (In fact there are play offs for one promotion spot but never mind). The team that is top of the premiership is the league champion.
Then there is a big knock out competition called the FA cup which winds up with a final in May. There is another knock out cup called the league cup but for some reason no one really takes that seriously.
And that, apart from the European cups, is it. Scotland has its own leagues and cup, which are sort of serious, as does Wales, which are err, more grassroots shall we say.
Jag, if you told me you were hatched from an egg right now, I wouldn't be this stunned.... I thought it was a matter of national pride that folks in the UK not only don't watch, they don't know a thing about American Football. By the way, your intelligence on the matter is boundless. ~D
You would be suprised, basketball and American Football are the biggest US sports over here, there is a strong following for both. Now for me, I know how Football works, I know all the rules I need to know to be able to watch it in complete understanding, but I do not really enjoy it that much - I think it can get bogged down and tiresome at times. However I do watch it every couple weeks when it is on and my fav team is probably the Packers, but that is just because I like Favre. I don't mind the Pats, but they win too much for my liking. (Remember I am a Red Sox and West Ham - thats our football - supporter, so I am not used to supporting winning teams ~;))
Now people over here really don't know a blind bit about baseball, that I find an abomination! Baseball is the greatest game on the planet, imo. Well with rugby, of course.

I never thought I would say this, but...
I agree with JAG! I love the Packers, and find it enormously funny that their ex-coach is now coaching the totally abismal Seahawks here in Seattle.
And you like baseball?!?!? Watch out for the cricket enforcers!
I don't think the Eagles have much of a chance, and I'm really glad that the pats creamed mannings sorry little butt after what he did on Lambeau field.

I urge you to watch the Welsh FA Cup final if you ever get the chance, it's hilarious. It's played in a field-which is backed by a row of terraced houses- in a nondescript valley somewhere, with a crowd of about two hundred. ~D
No contest. The patriots are a powerhouse. For the next couple of years there going to be unstoppable.

Not whent he Offensive Cordinator for the Pats leaves for Notre Dame, and the cursed Defensive Cordinator mabey is leaving. Then the Colts shall rise and all shall bow before them. Although I still hold hope that in 2010 the Cincinati Bengals are gonna win the Super Bowl.

Not one Philly supporter? *Looks in Gregoshi's direction* Not even after JAG picked the Patriots?
With this Super Bowl, we get to identify the range of the Curse of JAG. It either holds the Boston area exempt or only works in hockey and politics.

The latest line is Philly +7. Maybe Greg is holding out for more points? I think the bookies are going to have to up the spread to at least +10 before much money gets played on Philly. The curse of the Bambino has been laid to rest, let's see how much staying power is in the Curse of JAG. Good one Kongamato. ~D
im pulling for philly, i cant stand dynasty teams. the same team over and over every year gets old real fast.
still hats off to the pat's their dominate for a reason...
got no real stake in this one, my team got destroyed by atlanta in the playoffs.

Well as an American and a proud resident of New England I have only one thing to say.
I chose Gah!, I do not care a bit about football, though what most americans know as soccer is quite fun! ~D
Now people over here really don't know a blind bit about baseball, that I find an abomination! Baseball is the greatest game on the planet, imo. Well with rugby, of course.
there is a reason noone knows about baseball, there is a better sport called cricket, its kinda like baseball except you need endurance.
yeah and american football is a pretty lame game, rugby is a real sport, ive never seen an american footballer leave the field with their face torn open and jaw broken.
the other game i like to play is AFL, which is great fun and requires heaps of skill, it is also quite painful alot of the time, like getting taken out trying to get the mark.
thanks,

The Pats, but I have a feeling that this will be a great game!!! There will be a battle for every yard, a total grudge match. i can't wait!!
BTW, Jag and I were seperated at birth, baseball is the greatest sport on earth and yes, he is the evil twin!!! ~;)

Good to see you Jay, yes Atlanta put a serious smack down on the Rams and i loved every minute of it (sorry). I can't stand the St Louis fans around here. When the Falcons made the Rams thier b****es that day was a great moment in my life. Unfortunately Vick got shut down by Philley's D, and made Vick look like a blind man trying to find a corner in a round room.
Jay, when are you coming down to my neck of the woods again. I owe you a beer and a tour of the base. Better make it quick though, I'm going to be a civilian in a few months!!!

Super bowl eh? Well I don't like any American sports. They give me the sleepies. Especially baseball, which I could play forever and still not understand how it works.
I do however like the Rockies ~D , that's got to count for something....~
BTW, you americans should try watching some Champions League games. Just a recomendation. You might even enjoy it more. Uh oh, the canadian police is here and their gonna lynch me for my disrespectful post. Sorry gotta go.... ... :hanged:
Not whent he Offensive Cordinator for the Pats leaves for Notre Dame, and the cursed Defensive Cordinator mabey is leaving.
Losing those two is definitely going to set the Patriots back some. They will probably take this game though. Just too strong on both sides of the ball.
As a Cowboys fan (sorry, born in Texas, got no choice ~:) ), don't really care who wins, just want a decent game like last year. Although, the thought of T.O. getting a ring might be pushing me towards the Pats...

I'm taking Philadelphia.
They worked their butts off this year, and wind up in the big game despite numerous setbacks. I like them because of their teamwork - they have 'stars', but those stars know how to set aside their drive for individual glory for the overall good of the team, in my opinion.
My local bar (tavern) owner offered me 10 points, so I've got $20 on the line with him (I would have taken Philly straight up, ha!).
Any side bets?
Kukri predicts:
1st score: New England
Coin toss: Philly
Most rushing yards: Philly
Most passing yards: New England
and the big one: final score: Philly 38, Pats 35

dont remind me of the rams, im still tweaked about that one, didnt expect to get spanked that bad. knew they'd lose, but damn...
dont think ill be down till this summer, last year my week stay in st louis, got shortened to 3 days, my uncles cancer turned for the worst, and wound up flying to dallas for 3 weeks.. work wasnt happy about it, but oh well, they slammed me with the the hump run, basically between aug and thanksgiving i was gone for all but two weeks... something like 22 or 23 states in that time frame, a lot of travelling.. it sucks basically spend the morning at one of our vendors in a town, then drive 3 or 4 hundred miles to the next vendor, and repeat..
You could always be an Oilers...er, Imean, Texans fan!!! ~D
I like to think of myself as a true old-school Cowboys fan. They ought to clone Tom Landry and make him the coach again. I will root against them for the greater good (ah, the Switzer years), and am praying that Jerry Jones will sell the team to a more competent owner some day....

Tom Landry was the man!!!
Well Jay, I'll be out of the Air Force by the next time you swing by but I'll probably will still be working on base if not NGA on the other side of the river. Just let me know. BTW, do you think the RAms will finally wise up and sack Marx once and for all. He's a better offensive coordinator than a couch.
Gregoshi
02-01-2005, 04:47
Rats! Just lost a rather lengthy post again, so here is the short version.
Of course I'm rooting for the Eagles, but they have too many "if"s for my taste.
1) the receivers have to play big - T.O. or no T.O. but the injury to Chad Lewis hurt this prospect.
2) the Eagles have to run the offense that got them to the Super Bowl. In past years' big games, Reid has gone conservative and that killed them.
3) the Eagles must eliminate the poorly timed penalties. They have a knack for getting penalties that keep the opponent's drive going or that nullifies a big play. The played well enough against the Falcons to get away with it. They probably won't be so lucky against the Pats.
How the Eagles defense handles the Pats offense may be the key to the game.
BTW, I'm a Packers fan by nature. I'm an Eagles fan via the Stockholm syndome - the condition in which a hostage becomes symphathetic to a kidnapper's cause. ~:) Go Eagles!

Hey Gregoshi, my next door nieghbor is a huge Packers fan. I gave him some sh## about this year then he reminded me the Falcons traded Bret Favre to the Packers and then proceeded to thank me and my hometown team for the rings. I shut up at that point. Bret's done good for the Packers all these years and they are an easy group to cheer for, better luck next year...
Tom Landry was the man!!!

if i make it down again this yearm ill look you up, not sure if im going this year or not, i got two weeks reserved in aug for vegas, my sister is finally marrying that boy, after 8 years she finally said yes.... i gotta dress in a tux, unfortunately i have to give her away....
and no i dont want him fired, i want him demoted back to oc, and find a new head coach... they got the talent to make better showings, something just isnt clicking with them yet...
also id like a new defensive coord, thats a real weak spot for them imo...
I believe it will be a very close game. The Pats have great Offence, Defense, and Speacial teams. Same as the Eagles, BUT Eagles are new comers, its been 24 years sence they have been in the SB, Pat won last year. I think if TO goes in, like they are planning, it will be harder for the Pats, but they may not play TO that much, he is just getting off an injured ankle. I am in Delaware, about 45 minutes from Philly, I hate them. I feel they are really cocky and Im hoping it will shut everyone up if the Pats when. Its gonna be close, Im thinking a touchdown or Fieldgoal away close. :charge:
Oh and I wanted the Packers in the SB too, but Favre throwing 4 interceptions, didnt help at ALL!! :furious3: Favre's getting old.

Bump!!
It's time to see who'll win this year. I'm expecting New England to win. Their offense is fluid and their defense is unpredictable. I think Philly's blitzes will backfire on them, and I also think Philly's offense won't get as far as New England's.

Your curse still lives. The exception appears to be games involving sports teams near the Boston area. I believe it is because that is the only area in this country that sufficiently resonates with your thought patterns.
