View Full Version : Men and their TVs
I'm writing an article on men and their relationships with their television and I would like some input.
If you would oblige me, what kind of TVs do you fellows have and what is your idea of the perfect TV scenario? Size of set, what to watch, how to watch it, where you rank the importance of TV in your life, that sort of thing.
Thanks. ~

The ideal set would be a nice wide/flat-screen on the wall (ther larger the better ~D ) with a nice Dolby Surround Sound System to truly enjoy movies on DVD.
The lack of neighbours who might complain about turning the system up too much would also be helpful.
Personally I do not watch regular TV program very often, so use the TV set mostly for watching DVDs.
But the ability of the TV to keep the wife occupied while I am busy playing RTW or making silly posts at gaming boards should not be underestimated.
"Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" will always buy me 1 hour of time :inquisitive:

A nice flat-screen about waist-to-neck-high on the wall in front of the exercise bike. HD would of course be better than regular, but as far as LCD or plasma goes, I don't know which I prefer. There's only standard TVs in the house and the only HD I've seen is when I was in Circuit City once. It looked nice, but it was quite expensive. The companies are pushing for the TV to rank in the "major purchases" category, like a house or car. I would only do that if I knew for sure nothing better would come out in six months and that it would last me several years without breaking.
Does anyone know how long these mega-TVs last before breaking, and what the repair costs are?

Not sure about your question directly, but, I bought an extended five year warranty for my Sony 27" Wega. Cost 20% of the price of the TV but I get in home service and a new TV if the guy can't fix it on the spot.
Even if I never use it, it does make me feel a bit better about paying for the TV. I'm dreaming of a 42" Grand Wega during the summer and I will certainly get the same warranty.
I had the five year plan on my old Sony 36" projection TV. Big bloody thing to move, the stand was integral and the whole thing was four feet high. About four years and ten months into the plan I needed a repair. Would have cost me $120 for the fix. The warranty had cost me $100 five years before. It worked!

Maybe something in the 30 inches widescreen TV. IT shouldn't be too big. As long as you can see it well that's good enough. Really big TVs wreck your eyes. I Also need a surround sound. Without perfect sound everything sucks. I only want it for DVDs and South Park and maybe the Apprentice. That's ll I ever watch.
Ahhh and a small one with a bike would be great. That way you can watch South Park and also enjoy a healthier body.

I don't watch much TV, but I wouldn't mind replacing one of the walls of my house with a nice plasma-screen.
For research, of course. ~;)
We have a nice TV in the living room, but my TV is on a little cart so that I can push it into whatever room I'm in, or even outside. It's got a 50 ft extension cord and an equally long cable. It follows me to whichever room I'm in to provide background noise.
I think the funniest thing I ever heard about men and their TVs was about Star Trek, the original series. Kirk symbolizes the classic American dad, in his big chair in front of a giant screen, giving orders to his family, some of whom also watch the bigscreen, others looking at their own devices (I guess these would be like the kids playing on the computer or GameBoy).

I have a mini TV on my desk next to my computer ~D I get every British channel on it, and I have a regular one, but I use the mini one the most ~:) It's so handy whilst playing RTW and watching cheesy soap operas! ~D ~;)

I have a 32inch Sony Surround Sound TV. Bought for around 25 pounds from my neighbour last year.
Id say i watch television around 3 hours a day, on and off. Its an important part of my life (god that sounds sad lol). So thats on average 21 hours a week.
I mostly enjoy live sport such as football (soccer for you yanks), documentarys (mostly things on Civilisation and discovery channels), comedy sitcoms and movies. I pay for digital sky television, which gives me hundreds more channels for about 15 pounds a month. I think...havent checked my bill for a few years. ;)

Something HD and large so I can hook my computer up to it back away and get great picture and really big battles in RTW. I usually watch TV while playing Rome as well, but for me it is History Channel if something good is on with the TV too far away for my eyes to see well without my glasses, so I use the soundsystem most. I would prefer a really good computer monitor over all of that though. Something that can support insane resolutions over 2000, that I will never use but will still be available.
Oh and a bit of windex and a rag to clean it with.
A nice small 12 Inch screen in black and white with flickering transmission. Not to mention not being able to get BBC1 or 2. Programme wise, it has to be gardeners world and antiques roadshow, what a treat.
Reality? Hell no - just couldn't bare seeing all the huge plasma screen posts ~;)

I'm disapointed...I thought the thread was about guys and their cross-dressing mates ~;)
I like projection tvs personally. Just something about 90" tvs with perfect, crisp displays which I like. Halo 2 multiplayer is never the same again.
Except they cost about 2 grand and only work in the dark...

I don't care too much about the TV, so long as the sound is good. My TV is in the same room as the hi-fi, so we're all wired into that. Me and my dad are audiophiles, and so that Hi-fi has had thousands of pounds and hours of careful fiddling lavished on it. It sounds gooood.

Well my brother installs sound systems in theaters and he just bought a dvd projctor and swears by it. You can fill a whole wall with it and its sharp as can be. He also has a 3000 watt surround sound system built from theatre quality stuff. All he has to do now is install some theatre seating ~:)

Yeah i know what you mean Gawain of Orkeny, I have wathed movies at my uncle's house on a projector powered by the laptop. But there's only one problem, it costs like $8000!!! Also you need a comp(preferably a laptop) to go with it. It is really expensive. Also you better make the room really dark in order to see anything.

We have a 28" widescreen in the living room and a 24" normal screen in either bedroom, none in this room so far but I might take the 14" one from the kitchen. I don't watch much TV, maybe about 4-5 hours per week, but the wife is always watching it. I used to have it piped through the hi-fi but I've been too lazy to put up some mini trunking in this house, what, I've only been here 18 months.
A huge bang and Olufson widescreen baby. It turns towards the remote.

TV I have now is actuallly my dads 30 year old one he got from Sears (yes it is colour lol). My TV ranks fifth in my life importance, after computer, hockey, soccer, and school(not saying I enjoy school lol). The dream TV has to be the Pioneer I saw in Future Shop (the picture totally kicks a**), with an auto revolving couch(lol) and a Surround Sound System with tiles on the wall that just bounce those sound waves everywhere. A built in DVD/CD player, internet access and a snack dispenser would mean I would only need to leave the couch/treadmill for school, hockey, soccer, after school dances, etc., etc. :duel:

28in Phillips Widescreen TV - free as a bribe to give someone some business ~:)
Plumbed into a Surround System for DVD pleasure.
GAH! Girlfriend will not let me rearrange the room so that it is empty apart from TV, DVD, Surround and a Sofa. She prefers to have all the speakers hidden away and muffled by furniture, with the telly squeezed into a corner at a weird 45 degree angle from the sofa.
Doesn't matter anyway, I watch historical programmes (eg: documentaries and Time Commanders) and good comedies on TV (sometimes the occasional drama), or play DVDs and the playstation. Other than that I only watch the telly to keep my g/f company... which usually means soaps! Excuse me whilst my brains trickle out of my ears.
Importance of TV? Quite frankly, it sucks up time and spits you out feeling like you've wasted another evening of your life.

IT's true for the most part but I've also learned a lot from watching TV. There's lots of educational channels like PBS and the history channel. Also there's great shows like South Park and the Apprentice. Plus the news of course. Without news you're lost. So yes it's important to have a tv but you shouldn't get carried away and spend all your time watching it.

Oi, what's wrong with gardeners world?
Anyway, the answer is, the best TV in John Lewis that costs no more than £250 when the last TV blows up. I hate trying to work out what TV/Hi Fi/PC is best, shopping is an ordeal not a pastime, and, basically, I'm tight when it comes to that sort of thing.
Motorbikes and leather jackets, on the other hand, I make exceptions for.
OT, but on the subject of TV, did anyone in the UK catch the re-run of Top Gear last night when they had Clarkson in a Lotus Elise trying to evade missile lock from an Apache Gunship, to the sound of "Ace of Spades"? Normally I hate cars and I hate Clarkson but it was three minutes of brilliant TV.
