View Full Version : Marian Reforms - HardCoded?

Hello,

I was wondering if one of your Modding Gurus here, may know if the Marian Reforms could be something that one could do for another faction aswell.

Is it Hardcoded? Is it only specific to the roman Factions?

Or is it a general event, but does not have any effects on the other factions since they don't have alternate units?

Thank you for any clarification in that regard.

The Marian reforms are hardcoded. They happen as soon as a Roman faction builds the Imperial Palace. They cannot be changed or assigned in any way.

However, you can use requirements strings with other factions just as you can with the Romans, so that the things you want to build must wait for the Marian reforms.

in the 1.2 patch text, CA says that they're going to make the marian reform come later in the game, so maybe they un-bound the event to the imp. palace?

And what a wonderfull Idea of having something linked via use requirements strings to the event for another faction :)

mise en situation It helps to know aswell that the Imperial Palace is what triggers it, they hapened to me at around 200 BC, and I did not even had proper time to actually put the Triari to the battlefield. As I started exchanging units I noted however that they had some better stats than the Auxilia so kept all the tirari for as long as possible side by side with Praetorian Leggionaries. fin de mise en situation

Which of cource got me thinking about it, and prompted my question to you fellow modders. :)

I think I understand the decision to change that in patch 1.2 by the Devs now too.

Addendum

At first glance my impulse here was to make some "advanced" units for the rest of the factions as well when the Marian Reforms happen.

As I really got to survive turn after turn (playing this campaign at Hardest lvl), I actually realised how important the marian reforms are to the Roman faction from a gameplay point of view alone.

And I think this aspect of History was indeed nailed by the devs 100% in the evolution of the gameplay.

It is an Historical event yes, and it was represented very very nicelly I think not only for the sake of history but the game actually requires it, since truth is that Marius's genious went hand in hand with the expansion of the Empire.

Prior to the reforms, one can't really survive long against all the new Cultures and their styles of play, if only by sheer numerical advantage, however, the early Armies of the empire are good by themselves only in the periphery of Rome, and one really needs to suplement armies with vast mercenary types of units.

After the reforms the Romans get equivalents of these mercenary units which are now official part of any Roman Army, and thus I found myself, disbanding almost any mercenary army I had, except Hoplites and Elephants.

Very nicelly done Indeed, I love it, I am actually playing with the Scipii this time around.

The Idea to suplement the other factions further, post Marian Reforms, has merit in any case, but it would certaintly be an element that would tip the balance of power away from the Roman War machine, for some factions.

Fun being a criteria it still worth the wile I think!

And I wonder if any of you had similar experiences or perception of this, enough to prompt a Mod about it?
