With sacred circle of woden, they are truly amazing.

Town level unit that can give a good account of themselves against the Senate army is just insane. Combine them with screechers and you have the best early army around

Urban Cohort.

Very well rounded units, in fact too well rounded and reliable to a point that makes them seem cheaty.

They can take on phalanx, screwing those buggers with pilum before the melee, hold against cataphracts charges(1 vs1), beat the crap out of armoured elephants (1vs1) and disassemble bloody chariots easily plus they are still more maneuverable compared to hoplites type troops.

If there is a second fav I will go for screeching womens, very useful for 1.2k games.

Yeah, but Urbans do not hold against Companions, at least not my Seluecid companions. At that tech level you should have a good war temple and blacksmith stuff anyway.
The Berserkers are great fun. I love pitting one group of them against a huge army on a bridge. No trouble holding for quite a while, especially if you send them in after your troops have worn the enemy down a bit.

A hoplite base that gets attacked and then has companions flank the enemy will beat just about anything. With the AI this is easy to do, with humans I bet it is harder but when your cavalry can overpower any other unit on the field destroying enemyu cav to allow you to flank unmolested is easy. Works especially well with cheap hoplites, as long as they hold.

You8 have to be a member to vote, don't worry it does not take very long at all. It took me 2-3 weeks and from what I have heard I was an exception. It took me a while to get noticed. Once you hit 50-100 good quality posts just pm a moderator about it.

Companions! Just something about watching an enemy army buckle and run after 30 seconds of battle and 2 seconds of cavalry charge!

Spartans are my favorite infantry unit, next to Urbans. They can just hold back thopusands of enemies even when their formation is broken! Try using them with a no walls city v. desert infantry armies, max out the Spartans and only use 320 of them (4 units). You will probably fall in the end, but you hold out a really long time and kill way too many of them!

I was very partial to the Spanish Bull Warriors in 1.1.

But that was with the Primary weapon bug and so unbeknownst to me at first they had an attack stat of 17!~D

Add to that their bonus from warcry, aswell as the usual barbarian forest or wood bonus and they were incredible units on the attack as well as the defence.

Double hitpoints, Good stamina, fast and with a 17+ attack from their javelins they were awesome to use in battle, they were certainly the strongest Barbarian foot unit, and as barbarians could access them a lot sooner then the two concerned civilised factions could access Spartans and Urban Cohorts Bull Warriors for much of the game were the strongest infantry units of all.

I'll re-evaluate my opinion of them once I've had a chance to play 1.2 for a while.~)

Im the lonely vote for the longshields :) Im a bugger for cheap though nummerous cavalry. Make an anvil of Poeni infantry, and let the cavalry run 'round. They've got enough power to deal with any enemy cavalry, and are cheap enough to expand without worries.

Odd but I notice in my last post my saying that I was partial to Bull warriors (past tense), and that I intended to re-evaluate them in the 1.2 version when I've played it for a while.

Onagers! The repeating balista's are pretty good too. In a full strength army I usually include 2 units of onagers and 1 RB (if roman).

Hmm....

The Macedonian Light Lancers have to be one of my top favourites, they crack most things with a superb charge, but you have to pull them out again at once because they have absolutely NO staying power...

Slingers, and particularly Rhodian slingers of course, are also on my top list, they really decimate most opposition, though they can't them if you have your own troops in front, but as long as you're careful they're superb. I have a REAL for fighting against them tho, I usually think twice before attacking a force including the Rhodians, as they ALWAYS decimate me! And it's usually against greeks, and the AI puts them in front of the hoplites, so I can't effectively charge them off with my cavalry either...

And gotta love the elephants when they charge a close group of infantry, just for the animation when people fling through the air ~D

Horse archers of any type has been my all time favourite ever since I tried the Turks in MTW, they're just lovely!
I haven't got v1.2 to work on my computer yet tho, and I heard they were altered a bit, and quite a few were whining...from what I heard, they can't fire when running away from the enemy(and possibly at the enemy too), but they can fire when walking and in the cantabrian circle formation, which I believe is a good thing. Someone complained about them being useless because in skirmish mode they can't fire when they're running away from the enemy, but I can't really understand why people complain, use the cantabrian circle!

If you want to get technical Spartans should probably have the highest stats in the game, never route and have the multiple hitpoints like they do. They were the best, it is hard to get a soldier to outskill someone who has been trained since childhood to kill. Hell even their art and music was for purely military reasons, keep time while marching and such. They are not as good as they would be in reality though. 300 v half a million or so persians proves it...

There were only 300 SPartans and there were some other greeks, but the Spartans had a tactical advantage while in the pass. Yeah the persians were probably less but it is still an excellent story.
BTW the main greek force had retreated and the Spartans and some other greeks were holding the pass alone, I believe there were less than 1000 of them when the main greek force left.

I voted for the german spearband.
Sure, most of the other eligable units would beat them, but they are still awesome.
On battle level, they can defeat cav, and pin any infantery for a long time.
They have large numbers, so they can sustain many casualities and still carry on. Also, they are hard to surround, because their front is so wide.
On strategic level, they have even more advantages. They are cheap. They have very low requirements, so they can be build, and more important replentished everywhere.
And, finally having large numbers means they are effective garrison units - wich fits perfectly with their low price and maintainace.

They are a cheap, reliable all purpose unit that is available from the start.
