I'd say Cataphracts. Very good armor, attack and hard to beat.

I voted for Companions because very few units are able to withstand their charge.

Well as my companions allowed me to win against a post marius large Scipii army with 5 units of them and militia hoplites.....
If you can get the enemy to attack a base of units that will hold at least for a while you win. Even with the roman onagers I crushed them, just sacrifice one unit to take them down.

Got to agree about the Cataphract Archers. For pure close combat capability the standard Cataphracts will stomp all other horse cavalry, and the camel version will stomp them if they can catch them, but overall I prefer the flexibility of their archer brethren.
