View Full Version : When Total War appeared
I am a new in Total War world and a question in mind that what happened when Total War appeared with shogun total war . I think it was a big different looking to the stratigic games among all players .
When Shogun first hit it was quite unique and immediately appealed to a lot of gamers who had been hoping for just that type of game - a strategy game with a great 3D battle resolution AND a cool multiplayer.

before that RTS's were just constant C&C clones, it was different, i was hooked after just the demo.

Yep exactly, it was totallydifferent to what was before, it literally was groundbreaking new stuff, on par with any of the half life series.
Multiplayer was also awesome, a great atmosphere and some perfectly adept players, I reckon most of us miss what it was like back then! ~;)

Man, STW was just the greatest game I ever loaded on my PC. I'm hoping CA will redo Shogun in the RTW engine, but not put too many retarded comercialized units in it.

I second that. They should really go back to their roots on their next title. Hear hear! ~

i've said this since i first saw the Rome engine half way through it's development. If CA could combine the Atmospheric setting of Shogun with the graphics engine of Rome, then they'd make a game better than all their others. ~

Shogun!!! Shogun!!! Shogun!!!
Man that would be sweet, good to see you again Jacque!!! ~:)
I remember when I first saw the trailer for Shogun Total War, my jaw almost literally hit the floor. From that first moment, I knew in my gut that strategy gaming was about to change forever.....
Uesugi Kenshin

And look at it now?
Are there a million clones to contend with..... Not to my knowledge.
Oh well at least the longtime fans can still find joy in this great series. And late at night when everyone is asleep and your computer is defragmenting you can watch Decisive Battles, just so you can look at the pretty Persians get slaughtered at Thermopylae.
I swear the Spartans won..... (Strategically)

May I suggest you look at Warhammer: Dark Omen. It had the battlefield command of the Total War games before the Total War games...

That's true, and the fact that you weren't playing semi-scripted battles helped. There was Shadow of the Horned Rat before Dark Omen, but I never played that, so no idea if it was the same type.

Personally, I dont think the MP is as well handled as other game such as Ground Control 2. At the moment, while you are in the lobby trying to find your friend(s), you can not have Privite Message, or create your own room to talk to just your mates, unless you totally rely on that game spy thing which I dislike.

When Shogun: Total War first came out, I was very disappointed. I was expecting a copy of the very excellent board game of the same name (Shogun, renamed as Samurai Swords). I still dont like it, but now with the Warlord Edition, it's only just barely standable.

I would suggest you try Samurai Wars.
The STW mod add-on for MTW/VI
Check it out in the Jousting Field
All you need to download and install it are in the Puzz3D signature.

I didn't play Shougun much but when I tried MTW I got hooked on it. I have not played other strategy games, they are all a copy of Age of Empires.

Actually Age of Empires (great tho it is) is nothing like the TW series - in terms of being based upon it. AOE is in fact a clone of many many other games. The Town build/management & battle rts style has been around for a LONG time.

Granted, but when AoE3 comes out I'm buying it - Ensemble Studios just has that kind of reputation with me... plus it's going to be on the Havok engine... (you know: Half Life 2). I really hope that they can revolutionize their side of RTS games, as the Total War series has deffinately carved a niche off on this side.

If I remember right AoE was the first strategy game I played. I haven't been around for long so AoE was the first. Though I've been around computers very long. I still have my old 286 ~D
Just my impression. I like Shogun. But that's all. Just like. I prefer MTW that Shogun because of the varieties units / factions / culture that the single type of Japannese culture. I might be wrong but I do sense most ppl who adored Shogun comes from the western hemisphere (europe & america). Maybe as an Asian I'm more interested in western setting (as in MTW & RTW). Might that be the reason ? I don't know. But the ideas of Geishas, ninjas, samurais do garner greter interest that the dope smoking Hashishins...
:charge:
Anyway I only manage to finish one faction (the green faction of Hokkaido.. forgot the name) on VH setting... har har har.. Tried to play Maeda many time but were quickly anihiliated.. Poor me.. :furious3:
when shogun first appeared, i had already played the nobunaga's ambition series on the original nintendo and the romance of the three kingdoms series on the original sega genesis. both games series were by koei. and they both had a strategic map where when you moved your armies to attack another province, you would go to the battle map and fight it out in the city. i had also played centurion which was a roman equivalent but where when you fought on a battlefield as opposed to a city. so the total war to me has always been more of an evolution than a revolution for me but shogun was still awesome, because multiplayer, tactics, height and most importantly morale were all gonna have an effect which the previous games did not have.

To me, STW was the first game that really made me feel like a general, commanding actual UNITS of troops (as opposed to the usual RTS groups of a dozen or so individual guys). They moved and looked like military formations. Realistically trying to outmanouver the enemy, and to keep my army from collapsing into a mob. Great Stuff.

They've still got it, but in my view they took a bit of a hit with Age of Mythology. That was useless.

I still love AoE2. It's not a real strategy game like MTW, but it fills it's purpose (being fun) quite nicely. A skilled player with the Briton Longbowmen can pwn everything in sight. The only thing that has better range than them are trebuchets, and a squad of Longbowmen can easily move in and take them out. Garrison a castle with fully upgraded (read: range) Longbowmen, and only trebuchets can touch it.
Naturally, they run into the problem of Huscarls and their extreme piercing armor, which is why I keep my Longbowmen covered with infantry support when I'm facing a Goth opponent.
Another fun unit to play with is the Chinese Cho Ku No. A large group can machine gun down any unit in seconds.
I was totally amazed when I tried the MTW demo. It was around a year after the game came out, before I downloaded it.
I mean, what other game have you setting up forest ambushes and the thrills of a cavalry charge...
That and the last stand of LionHeart outside Fajra?? citadel against Saladin sold me. I completely forgot about Warcraft after that.
RTW kinda lost the look and feel of a real wargame like MTW. Bugs and insane kill speeds ruined my game. Plus I hate the stupid reinforcement system. I always remember fighting endless supplies of Gold Mongol Hordes in their heartlands with limited reinforcements. Those 3-4 hour battles were so much fun lol. Never bought STW though.

I started with MTW and continued with VI. No Shogun or Rome (yet).
The only thing MTW reminds me is a simple Windows game called "World Empire". It has the very primitive seed of the strategic part of TW. No tactical stuff though; battles are autoresolved.

Agreed. Even though the game looked amazing, something was missing from the old ones. It was good, but I think that too many things were changed so that it wasn't as much fun as it could've been. It was very good as an idea, and parts of the game made me really entertained - but even though it was perfectly stable with little to no bugs (after about 3 patches) I still didn't like the new gameplay enough.
