View Full Version : Is there a "not sucking" mod for RTW yet?

Hello, I haven't posted on these boards for a while. That being a result of my utter and complete dissapointment in RTW. Let's put it this way: when you can't even think of one nice thing to say about a game, there's a serious problem. I recently got a new video card, and I thought about re-installing RTW to play it with full settings, but then realised that I'd rather ram rusty nails through my genitals than play RTW again. However, I got wind of a patch that seems to address many of my greivances. The part about "minimal UI", in particular excited me.

So, my question is, are there any mods that fix the other problems? And by that, I mean removing/replacing the fictional Egyptians, slowing down combat yet not making it seem artifical, etc?

Are you sure you want a mod? You know when somethings that bad.........

Anyways RomeTotal Realism would basically address that. The movement rate mod works fine. The kill rate mod is a bit different as peasants get a minumum kill ratio or something else that causes them to be uberstrong on stonewalls and decent on the battlfield.

Of course the modding section would be a much better place to go to ask this or search what all the mods do to see if it interests you.

Rome Total Realism is easily the best mod IMO at the time being, however it does not have the 1.2 patch, so it seems a little obsolete at the time, and will be as they will have to "start from scratch" for the next patch for RTR. So unless you want to play RTR on v1.1, stick with Vanilla.

I'd agree with RTR, but I don't recommend the 5, or 5.1 versions of it; the end turns are taking approx 2 mins on my PC & I have a v.high spec. Also others have commented that the massive increase in provinces makes actually winning the game rather easy...

That aside, I've rolled back to v.4 of RTR & can't imagine returning to vanilla until the new patch is released.

When the EB mod is released that'll be the best it can get.

I bet if you aked them nicely , one of the RTR team would make you a Post Patch 1.2 killrate/movement mod with the 5.1 Ptoemeic Empire replacing the Egyptians , or they might email you the files etc with instructions on how to do it yourself .

Couldn't hurt to ask .

There's a western-only version for 5.1 that removes the eastern extension and returns the between turn times to normal. I wouldn't recommend version 4.0 because it introduced buildings that the AI cannot handle properly; v5 removed them.

not on mine 5.1 is great but i put allot of units from other mods in it for a bit of variation but i dont really like what they've done with the archers and some skins

Man, I guess it's gonna take a while...
1.2 is playable in SP once U fix the HA bug, IMO.

RTR is a huge bag of mixed blessings.
If there was an installer with check boxes and radio buttons, I'd use it, but the whole package introduces as many things I don't like as it brings improvements.

I think I'll try Vlad mod once updated to support 1.2..
He not writes English brilliant, but mod getting serious nice commenting.
Vorbis' Augmentation Pack looked promising, but seems to have died.

Trivium SPQR mod is probably one to watch. Seems to be actively developed by dedicated group.

Several others have promise, but not this side of passover.

Mods will hopefully make this game live for years. ~

Care to provide specifics?

Unfortunately the way the files are built a check box/radio button is not really feasible.

Yeah, well, I haven't played the latest incarnations of RTR, so claiming to know what it "is" may have been wrong.

My experience was one of little QA, frequent fixes, graphical glitches, variable quality skinning etc. This is OK, as far as I'm concerned. It's a free mod that dedicated individuals provide to those who want it. I acknowledge that a lot of effort and talent has gone into the project. From what I have gathered it's probably more polished now, but I think it's still not my ideal cup of tea, though I may check it out again soon.

My ideal mod would be "Rome: Total Gameplay". Realism is not an inherently bad thing. It just isn't my main focus in a computer game. There are limits to realism whichever way you boil your bottom, and if realism were maxed out, it would make for a tedious game of axe-grinding. I would like to be able to take a minor faction to ahistorical levels of glory and civiliwhatnot. History is a limited selection of actual events mixed with distortions and lies anyway. The Romans leeched most of their tech and culture from the Greek and others, so why shouldn't other nations be able to do the same? OK, so the Vandals and Sillygoths weren't very keen on the whole sophisticate bag when the western empire fell, but at "our" time other civs were thriving, and I guess that several of them would've been open to further advances given the opportunity.

I have ideas for buildings: All factions may (after reaching a certain point) build mutually exclusive buildings called... "Greek style democracy" "Roman style republic" "Crazed religious dictatorship" etc. They will take long to build, and each will give major + and - to law, happiness, battlefield morale, ancillaries, traits... Maybe I'll try modding it come september.

RTR ist he best mod currently available, but having said that its the ONLY full mod currently available to my knoledge.

What theyve done is nice, and u can bet your ass its better than vannilla rtw, but when EB and Chivalry - TW come along they will be superior.

EB ( Europa Barbarorum ) has the largest workforce of modders and a great deal of dedication and enthusiasm behind it, along with some seriously talanted skinners.

CTW ( Chivalry - Total War ) Is the one and only Medieval mod for the RTW engine in production. Atho there is not as much power pushing it along ( probly due to that fact that all the modders are working on EB ! ), Adherbal the chief modder has great talant and consistancy. You can bet when CTW finally arives it will be the greatest thing u ever played ( i speak with some bias as i am part of the dev team ~D, but trust me it will rock ).

Other great mods in production include

BLUE LOTUS by Hoggy: a damn fine modder with great ideas who so far seems to have taken the whole project on by himself !, and is coping remarkably well.

Sengoku Jidai : The Feudal Japanese mod, something of a STW remake.
The progress of this mod has been dramaticly slowed however, by the loss of the team leader Duke John , who decided that he dislikes rtw battle ai too much and has left the mod, and the rest of the team in the lerch !

Full conversions like the ones ive mentioned require a HUGE amount of work to complete, hence none of them have been fully released and are unlikley to be for at least a few months.

The Difference with RTR is that it started of with very small changes, and continues to grow, meaning serveral public releases can be made while it developes. A good idea for a mod based on rome, sort of like a series of improvements to the original game. But this is not really wise for a project set in another time perioud like Sengoku Jidai, as you would end up with yari samurai fighting legionaries in carthage, or some-such nonsense.

IMO if a way to develop a better battle ai for the rome engine is not found by the modders, then no mod will have serious longevity unless it is made specificly for Multiplayer mode.
