This often happens when assaulting cities and towns; I'll batter my way in through the gates or wall, then order the units I've got grouped into the breech AS A GROUP and they either won't respond at all or they all run away, then come back to the spot to which I originally ordered them. Similar thing happens when going down off a wall through the gate house; the unit just seems to stop somewhere inside with only a few men actually reaching the ground inside the wall. What the hell is going on in these cases? -Silius Sodus

This is a very well known bug. Path finding is messed up with grouped units in sieges. You will get correct behavior if you order each unit individually. Painful but necessary.

Might be fixed in 1.2

I dont have an answer for you either, as I havent had the chance to check out 1.2 yet. Can I add one to your query? Has the unit pathfinding at the town center and city gates improved at all? Tactical movement in these locations, especially the city center, has always been a nightmare. Most sieges just end in a mass butt rush to the town square, at full rush to beat the clock no less.

Another thing that bugs me (apart from men falling down off the wall when the battle starts) is when my archers decide to march out of the gate to shoot at enemies who are too close to target. As the enemy draws close, the gate goes flying open, and wont shut until my gate guard pulls back. Aargh....

OT (i mean more OT): Are you from Fresno, CA fresnorugger? im from that area myself.

Yeah Obex, I live in Hanford actually (I play rugby for the Fresno club, hence the name). Back to the topic: I'm marching on Rome, lay siege building ladders and rams (I had two units of onagers with my army). Anyway, the senate garrison (all 163) sallies out to fight me on their turn. I'm thinking easy victory, but they never come out to fight and I have no siege equipment built. I destroy the gatehouse with onagers but then the game won't let me attack any part of the walls once the gatehouse was destroyed! This left me with no way in, I lost and had to withdraw. I swear the fucking game was cheating for itself. Why coudn't I attack the walls with my onagers after destroying the gatehouse? I've also been shot at from a supposedly 100% "destroyed" gatehouse once inside the walls.

I had a bug similar to the first post today. The only difference was that 1) they weren't grouped and 2) it wasn't in a city. What happened was i decided to get some of my spare soldiers, 2 mercenary hoplites, 1 merc peltasts and 1 cretan archers to attack a near equal Brutii force. The battle was going well, as the cretans kept making the enemy turn back with their arrows, when suddenly the enemy charges me. So i decide to bring the cretans back and let the hoplites take the full force of it. So what do the cretans do? They just stand there and let themselves get killed. And when i try to tell them to go somewhere else so they do't get completely obliterated, they ignore me. Then in another battle which was almost the same as the other, a different unit of cretans almost ruined my battle plan, because rather than keeping up with the army, they don't move at all. So i tell them to move just ahead of the army so that they can keep up with it. What do they do? Go the complete opposite way!! Then the enemy starts to charge, and they start running forwards into the enemy. It was a victory, but at a high cost. I lost more men than the enemy.
