I know it's said in the readme of the patch that it's fixed, but does anyone here have any experience with protectorates in the patch, I mean do they actually pay YOU tribute instead of you paying them...

Im yet to get a faction to become a protectorate even when they had just one city left and i had massive armies around it, seems abit pointless really ~

What Aetius has said doesn't apply to the patch in my experience. The AI makes himself nummerous protectorates: Im now a few decades in a Parthian campaign and the Gauls have Germany as protectorate and the Macedonians have Thrace... Germany is at its starting provinces, while Thrace holds its home and Byzantium, wich I presume was returned by the Macedonians when Thrace became a protectorate.
what exactly does having a protectorate do for you?

having a protectorate means you get there armies and thats it, they drain your treasury and you have to save there butts
also don't expect to beat them into subbmision and them just joining you. the only protectorate i ever got was one who was getting killed without my help. they were getting killed by the other easterners, i offered my help, they took it, i marched over and saved them by dominating parthia.
except to pacify the senate i think its just a nuisance
when you say get their armies do you mean i can train their troop types or just command their armies in the field?

No he's got that wrong.
Basically a Protectorate is a big protection racket... A Client kingdom if you will that is left under your protection.
When you get one you get full alliance with Military access and Trade rights. In addition anyone at war with your protectorate will be at war with you.
They are meant to pay you tribute for the "protection" provided, but I am not sure if it now works this way post-patch.
Prior to 1.2 there certainly was a bug where if you made someone your protectorate they would get a vast amount of Cash from YOUR treasury. CA Claimed to have fixed this financial drain bug, but until someone creates a Protectorate in 1.2 we cannot be sure.

To add one important point to The Emperor's description, having a protectorate also adds their number of provinces to your total when working towards victory conditions.
i am currently playing julii post patch and have beaten the gauls down to 2 provinces and they have no armies left to speak of. i am only getting the 'freedom is a precious thing...' speech from them even though i could easily obliterate them.
on the other hand, i have also become the largest empire in terms of land, and no sooner had i done that, then the spanish came to me and asked me to become their protectorate. i give them my version of the 'freedom is a precious thing...' speech but they keep repeatedly asking for me to become their protecorate.
it might be correlated with the fact that the spanish are allied with gaul and consequently are also at war with me. but it was funny that before i ever fought one battle with them, and after i had taken the lead in provinces, they were asking me to become their protectorate.

One has to wonder......... something seems broken!
Playing as Carthage post-patch (normal/normal). I've just stomped three Roman armies, taken one Scippii city, and am about to take the last on Sicily. Despite their losses, the Scippii have demanded I become their protectorate!
I created a Protectorate playing as the Julii under 1.2 last night and I can categorically state that it did NOT drain any money from my treasury.
Dacia became a protectorate after many, many turns of offering to attack Scythia even thought they only have one region/city left.

More importantly Tony, did the Dacians pay you any tribute?
I'm gonna go back to the campaign in a bit and have an old save, so will check and post back

For some reason, I doubt that.

I (Carth, 1.2) got myself a protectorate last night.
Gaul would have no ceasefire, but grudgingly accepted protectorate status.
We had been at war for decades, but neither had conquered any provinces.
They were not my main priority, so I just beat back a few attacks on Corduba and kept their fleets off the Med. The Gauls seemed to be doing mostly OK, but the Romans were starting to cause them trouble when they joined my racket ~;)
I'm not sure if my treasury was affected in any way, at least initially.
Being a softy and a do-gooder I spent 65K bribing a Julii general who was besieging my new friends in Patavium. Then I used the general to initiate an attack on the smaller Julii stack next to the one I bribed, getting support from the city. I was looking forward to hang around behind Roman lines, trampling velites and routers, but instead i got a CTD (which is very rare), and went to bed.
I made a couple protectorates in 1.2. The first one was Pontus, Thrace.
Didnt check whether their cities add to your total cities. There was no more of your money being spent to paying them for being your protectorate. However, I could not see any influx into my cash funds from their end. The tributes/diplomacy stayed 0.
I also checked the amount of money gained before havin a protectorate and after. I could not see any difference. ???
Also, it is really a waste of time. In one instance I made Pontus my protectorate, then the next couple of turns I attacked Parthia, which is somehow allied to Pontus. lo and behold, Pontus decided that they should cancel their protectorate status with me and support Parthia.. So next time, make sure the faction dont have any alliance status with any other faction when u assign them as ur protectorate.

So basically they fixed the Protectorate Bug but left them having no function?
buh?
As far as I can tell. If someone else can run a test with Protectorates it would be really great. I only use them to serve as permanent buffer zones with a strong enemy.
That, and I guess you can give ur protectorates lands on the outskirts of your territories. You know those faraway lands that generates like 100 gold but requiring 1000 to fortify...

the best way for testing is mod the desc strat thing and give a faction lots of money start war and offer them money in return of protectocrate
this is a fast way to test if you loose money and if they can attack you cause money bought protection usually doesn't last long
I have made Macedon a protectorate as Scipii in a new 1.2 campaign and they definitely don't take your money. I'm fairly sure, however, they do give you some of their money. I recieved a huge (about 80000) lump sum on the first turn, and am receiving about smaller amount (6000-8000) every turn since. It shows up under the diplomacy/tribute section of your balance sheet. Their territories also count towards your total.
I've only had them as a protectorate for a few turns, so I'll report back if anything interesting happens after I've played a bit more.
I read somewhere at the .com that they give you money only whern they have any left over after building/maintanence. So I'm guessing making protectorates and giving them Greece or Italy, when you're empire is stationed in Antioch/Egypt might be a good thing.
Or it may not....
