General Marius

Can anyone tell my, how I may get the Armoured general instead of the usually one???
For the Roman factions, they change after the Marius Reforms occur. I think this applies to all the other factions as well, but I can't be sure.

IIRC, it should happen after building the imperial palace. Pre-patch it didn't work though; dont know if it does now.
Yeah, sorry, should have said my post applies to 1.2 version of game. The upgrade does work in 1.2, and it is definitely after Marius Reforms, which don't now occur when you build an imperial palace, they occur much later.

If it's dependent on Marius rather than building an imperial palace, then how does this affect the upgrades of non-Roman generals? It would be a wee bit crap if other factions had to wait for Marius to pull his finger out before their own generals got better kit, if they have already built an imperial palace.

generals cavalry is always the strongest cavalry you can recruit at this time.
merely as an example carthaginian generals ride with roundshield cavalry until any of there towns get an elite cavalry stable then they ride with longshield. eventually they ride with sacred band.

Interesting. Does this apply to the rest of the factions? This sure didn't happen for me during 1.1 I'd love to see my Seleucid generals with a pack of Companions. :charge:

I'm quite certain that this is not the case. You can look inside the unit files and see that there is an early general's BG unit and a late general's BF unit for each faction. There are far more than 2 cav units for factions. Most earlys are 12/14 with 2 hp and pack quite a punch.
The late BGs are almost always an upgrade except for the Ptolemics who lose their uber chariots and get trashy cav. Late Eastern gens are probly the best with better attack cataphract stats.

The Greek Sacred Band of Thebes consisted of 300 men and was curbstomped without being reformed by Alexander and his Macedonians. It doesn't even exist in the RTW time period.
The Carthaginian Sacred Band did exist at this time, and was the only Carthaginian professional military formed, comprised entirely out of citizens of Carthage itself and the only military unit allowed within the city of Carthage. It was almost like their version of the later Praetorian Guard in Rome.

Ironically, the Sacred Band troops utilized by Carthage (btw, nearly every power since the rise of Thebe in Greece had SB troops; it was fashion) were disbanded in 300 BC, 30 years before the timeframe...
